97 600 F3 starting issues

for a freind of mine, thank goodness for F.I., know it's not an RR but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. He had the carbs over hauled last summer and ran it last year through Sept with no issues, tried starting it in late Oct and would crank forever and hit every so often accompanied by a backfire, but has never run since. Exhaust smells strong w/fuel, and plugs are sparking. I'm starting to think maybe timing, dunno.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

If the exhaust is strong with fuel then hes running rich. Best bet to first adjust the pilot jet/air jet which controls the lower rpm range. Usually you turn the screw counterclockwise to make it run leaner, but check in the manual to make sure.

+1, sounds like he's got way too much fuel. Had this same porblem on my f4. You might also check the air filter, my f4 was finnicky about that.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't successfull with anything, took it to the local dealer. Carbs clooged and alot of debris in gas tank. Yeh, that'll make the thing hard to start!
