Exclamation Weird No Start with '06 CBR 600rr

hey all

New to the forum but read all the 'no start' posts.

Well i moved from AZ to NJ and when my bike arrived (05 CBR 600rr) i started it in the garage to make sure it was OK. It fired up like usual and probably didnt start it for another month.

Just a few days ago i decided to do a quick start before being ready for the season and let it burn off some of the old gas in there. All it did was turn over. I found it odd. I have no idea why this has changed as nothing has changed with the bike itself. Gages light up, headlight on and the engine is turning, and there is gas in the tank

AFAIK there isnt any shut off valves the moving company may have popped off is there?

Anywho, tried it again today after holding open throttle for a bit prior to start and nothing again. Seems like the gas just isnt getting to the spark.

Any ideas? I cant imagine the jets would be clogged after such a short time.

Go get a Battery Tender and recharge the battery. Although you have enough energy to power your electricals, you likley don't have enough current to crank it over.

Also, we don't have jets. It's fuel injected...

Yah im heading down to the shop monday for a trickle charger.

Any particular brand you would suggest?


Seems like if it was starting prior to this only days before that it makes no sense the battery is dead now, unless my short starts ahve just worn it out...

Battery Tender is a popular brand, but in reality any charger would do. The short starts do effect it the most; you're expending all that energy to crank over the motor. You let it idle & rev a few times, but really doesn't charge the battery much as you're not moving the generator quick enough.

Also, how old long has the fuel been sitting there? I've usually gotten away with 1-2 months before it goes bad.

Great advice, i ordered the battery tender and when i get it ill update the thread.

Funny, its easy to think 'its not the battery' when it turns over so many times yet nothing happens. I might jump it with my jeep and see how that goes.

Ive tried the bump start :) its much harder with such a lightweight bike and rider.

Ive always been told that jump starting with the car as long as its off (since both are 12 v batteries) is absolutely ok.

Is this not true?

Yes. It's the car's alternator that will damage your system. So as long as it's not running you'll be fine.

But any auto parts store should have a 1amp trickle charger. Just make sure it says one of two things:
  1. Built in regulator
  2. "Won't harm the battery if the charger is left overnight."

I had the same problem with my bike. I started it just after replacing the battery revved it a few times and then I shut it off. When I went to start it up again it would do exactly what yours was doing. The key to it was holding the throttle wide open for awhile and then it finally kicked over. Do you by chance have any mods to the bike?.... Power commander possibly?

good point

I actually have a Dr X light mod to my rear taillight that i installed myself. It DOES suck the juice when u turn it on as it goes through a preset LCD pattern. That could have done it.

Update


So i tried to jump the bike with my jeep, same problem. it just turns over and over but no start. I can smell the gas so it appears thats getting through.

The next step is to look at the spark plugs tho it seems they should be fine since it has started up without an issue recently....

Any more ideas, keep em commin!

Sounds like its flooded. Mine did that after I put all the fairings back on. I kept keying it on and off to move the handle bars and test some of the electricals as I went back together. Once all back together, it took cranking at WOT for several minutes before it finally started. I was wondering if the injectors spray fuel every key-up anticipating a start (kinda like a choke for fuel injection)?

Yah it might be flooded at this point. Tho im not even getting the beginnings of a start just the turnover.

I might try what you suggested tomorrow. I only tired for a minute or 2 at a time today. Really seems odd to me...

Tried to start it today with a 5 min w/o throttle and nothing happened again.

Gonna have to bite the bullet and pay for the transport to the shop and have them diagnose... ugh i feel like an idiot...

First step is to turn key on and listen for fuel pump to prime. If fuel pump primes and you say you smell gas, injectors are probably pulsing.

Next take a spark plug wire off and check for spark (make sure there is no fuel or fuel vapor around)

If you have fuel and spark then there is no reason it shouldn't start unless there is a problem with computer and it is not timing the spark correctly. If you have both, it might be flooded so let it sit for a while.

I have also noticed that if the biked is leaned over and trips the sensor in the nose, then you have to cycle the key before it will start again

Did you try pulling the terminals off the battery to try and reset the ECU? That also might help. Just thought I might throw that in there.

Yah tried everything i could think of plus what was mentioned here.

I just got pickup up and taken to a local shop....

Im sure its probably a fuse :P

Got it fixed!

Ok

Update ;)

So in desperation (and against the man-code) I brought the bike to the shop.

Turns out that there was a little dirty gas which has the jets clogged enough that it wasent lighting. They fixed it in under an hour.

I felt like a fool, but then again, i didnt have the gear in my new place to do much anyway. For 80 bucks, it was worth it!
