starting problem

got a weird problem with my 03 RR
starts from cold fine but when its warmed up it sometimes has a hard time starting or wont start at all... any ideas what it could be?

example, leave for work 5am, its cold but the bike starts fine, after my shift i goto the bike and it starts fine after riding 14 miles or so i stop to get some petrol goto start the bike again and it wont display goes out clock resets etc so i have to run it down a hill to get it going i then ride less than a mile home so if the battery was flat it wouldnt have enough chance to charge i leave it over night and start it at 5am the next morning and it starts totally fine.

most times it will start but its like it really dont want to.

Here is what i suggest take the battery off the bike and get it
load tested from there test the Rectifier/voltage regulator and check
if its charging or not i think its the battery and not the Rectifier/ Voltage
regulator

same thing happens to me. I drive to the blockbuster to drop off a dvd so when i get back on the bike wont start. I had to wait a good 1 hour before it started.

So Moeman, you think it has something to do with the battery?

my 03 had the same problem especially if you had been sitting in traffic and it was really warm up around 220.. it would just crank and crank didnt want to start .. i cant tell you why but i can say after i changed my battery i never had this problem again .. i dont know if the batteries are suseptible to heat or what .. but i can say a new battery solved the problem for me

same problem and there is a reallly long thread on this somewhere on rr.net. my personal experience: it's not the battery (unless as element mentioned it's heat sensitive), changed the R/R to an 06 and that did nothing, changed the heat shield of the R/R and that did nothing as well. i've also heard it may be the wiring harness. either way don't throw money at it like I did. a lot of people will say its the heat shield or R/R. my 2cents, it's not.

had same problem, i fixed mine by simply repacing my battery

checked the battery was being charged ok and that checked out so ive put a new battery in today so i`ll see how it goes

When you sit at red lights turn your high beam off if your fan starts working
and as soon as you start moving again turn the high beam back on that will
conserve battery life the combo of fan , high beam , sitting idle sucks a lot
of juice and that causes the rectifier/ regulator to heat up and when it gets too hot and u shut the bike off you will have to wait till the rectifier/ regulator cools down before starting the bike i hope this info helps

my dads 97 bandit has this problem... it will start strong but when the motor is hot the bike doesnt want to turn over. he seems to think that when the bike is hot the compression gets too high for the starter to turn over like it normally would... bc it would try to start but you could hear the starter moving slow and straining to turn it over.... but hes stubborn and wont look into it any further...

i dont normally run with the main beam on, ive put a new battery on like i said and had a couple of runs which caused me trouble before and its fine now.. starts first time everytime so i guess the battery was knackered.

I had an identical issue with my '03. Even after replacing the battery, on occasion, I would hit the starter button an the lights would completely dim-out and after releasing the button everything would come back on, fuel pump would cycle, etc. I looked more closely into it figuring it wasn't just the battery and found burned insulation on the wire going from the starter relay to the starter. I pulled the starter and confirmed it was shorting-out. I replaced it (four months ago) and the problem completely went away. Maybe you should have your starter checked for shoring???

I'm having the same problem with my RR 05' and it's pissing me off. i'm going to try to replace the battery and all the other stuff everyone else mentioned, thanks for the info because i'm been trying to find answers to this problem for a while.
