crashed bike, rebuilt, but wont start

i put together my friend's bike after a, what looked to be, cosmetic damage. put all the controls and switches back with replacements. bike's starter turns, fuel pump works, but just won't start, even after pop starts.

i noticed gas smell coming from the exhaust after attempting to pop start it.

anyone have any ideas of what's going on?
