Gas cap trouble

So I got my gas cap powdercoated. I just got it back from the powdercoater and there is nothing in the cylinder but I cant figure out how to get it unlocked to install it. For some reason I had it unlocked yesterday and had a problem during install and stupid me I locked it again after.. and now cant get it unlocked.. Any ideas?

I have cleaned everything and lubed it with w-40.. cleaned out the cylinder..

do I need to have the gaskets compressed in order to unlock it? Curiours if anybody else has had a similar problem..

Not sure if this will help but on the gas cap there is a locking mechanism which you would have to push to lock the gas cap and would free the key from the gas cap. Check the locking mechanism?

If the cap is locked you need to use your thumbs index and middle fingers to press the rubber seal towards the face of the cap. This will turn the key to unlock and you can install the cap. T

We do this all the time. The key is in the cap and the key is turned and can't be removed. Hold the cap in your hands and squeeze it. The big rubber ring on the bottom towards the top of the cap. The key will return to normal position and you can remove it.

I have a keyless gas cap, sold my stocker...

infamous_6969
Did the powder coater remove anything off the gas cap when it was coated?

that is fine... and will work perfectly but that is to LOCK the cap... I am unable to UNLOCK the cap!!!

It is in my hand... however I need to UNLOCK it to get it on the bike.. and just turning the key doesnt do anything.. the lock moves a bit so I know everything works.. and the key hits the bottom of the cylinder.. but I cant get it to turn.. Does the bottom need to be compressed to unlock it?

No. The key alone will unlock it. Sounds like something is in your barrels. Push the key in and out a bunch of times and see if you can get it out, then try to turn it. T

I have done that all day... I sprayed it out with an industrial cleaner/lubricant and compressed air also...

Should I bring it to a locksmith and ask them to take a look.. or is there something I can do by myself?

How did you install it closed and locked? I dont think ours can do that because of the lock!

ok, its like a normal door. you can close a house door, car door etc when its locked but you obviously cant open it when its locked. same concept.
while its in this position, push the cap down until you hear the click. put the screws in.

the part that is circled will push in enough to set itself under the lip i circled with an arrow. then just turn the key and it should unlock

a little bit far though...

I think I need to get the lock checked out by a locksmith to check the tumblers and make sure they arent stuck or anything!!

sounds good anyways... I thought it was supposed to just unlock with the key and lock from compression!!

More info on the powder coat process. Was the lock taped off before it was prepped. What temp is used for powder coating? Any possible chance of you getting the wrong gas cap? Any others getting done at the same time? Check your key to make sure it's working in the ignition and it didn't get damaged trying to open the cap. T

Temp was 350 like I had asked you...
Lock was taped off...

Everything covered, it should be fine. The only problem we have had in the past was one where some sand got in the tumbles. It eventually worked it's way out. Never had a problem with a key not working after words. What prep did the coater do? Sandblast, parts washer? T
