Chain slack keeps changing

So, I was tightening my chain tonight and after fiddling around for about 1/2 hour, I think I have the wheel pretty straight.

When I check the slack at one point, it seems perfect (about 30mm) but if I spin the wheel around, I notice one point where the chain tightens up and I only ahve about 10mm slack at that point. What could be causing that? I checked the chain for kinks and its lubed up pretty good.

Is the wheel not straight? Would that cause that?

The chain has what they call a tight spot check the rear sprocket
cause it might be time for a new set the rear sprocket might look good
but if u decide to get a new chain it wont last with an old sprocket
its always better to change them both at the same time

Sounds like you need to change your chain and sprockets. Did you recently replace the chain, and not replace your sprockets?

If so, chances are that the chain did not wear/stretch correctly, and is now toast.

I replaced everything all at once last spring. Sprocket looks a little worn but not to the point I'll need a new one yet. I was planning on replacing everything again this winter. I hope it lasts until then.

I wouldn't ride like that if I was you. Not sure what your money situation is like, but you should change everything before then if you plan on riding. The last thing you want is for that chain to snap, or come loose while your movin'

Another thing to look for is bent teeth on the front sprocket. but the only way to really inspect it is by taking off the chain.

How many miles have you put on the bike after changing the sprockets and chain last spring? If you keep a chain clean, lubed and tensioned correctly it should last a pretty long time under normal conditions (ie. not racing or stunting).....at least 10k miles.
Oh, and look for kinky links in your chain...did you clean and lube it?

Thanks for the tips guys. Yeah I pretty much already knew everything in that link. I've put about 9,500 on the chain this summer so I'm probably getting about due. One thing I forgot... I bought both a 15 and 16 tooth sprocket for the front. I ran with the 16 most of the summer but I did put my 15 on a few weeks ago. I'm putting the 16 back on to see if that helps. I didnt think the front sprocket mattered as much as the rear, but it obviously might be the problem.

I also just lubed the **** out of it to see if that helps. Im pretty good about keeping it lubricated, but there still may be some kinks.

Im replacing everything this winter again. I just need it to last another month or so.


**EDIT**

I put the 16 back on. Still getting that damn tension at the one spot. Oh well. I'll deal with it more tomorrow.

ever since i shipped my bike out here to florida (from los angeles)... i've had a similar problem w/ the chain slack... the constant rain on my bike has got to be one of the factors in the never endin' chain slack battle... cuz there's plenty of that here.. and hardly any of that in l.a... and in l.a. i never had an issue w/ the slack.

I am having the same problem. I changed both sprockets and a chain in June, checked the wheel allignment, wear marks are equal on both sides, and are still indicating NEW. I even made sure to turn the adjusting bolt same number of times from all the way in on both sides. (i got an F4i, not RR, it's a bit different) rechecked wheel allignment again, and still get that variation in the slack. I clean AND lube the chain every 500 miles. I don't know, maybe it's bacause of rain. Maybe I should try a different brand of chain lube (using bell ray now) Any other ideas???

I lubed the sh*t out of it and took it for a 15 minute ride and lubed it again. Its definitely better. Theres still one spot thats a bit tighter than the others, but its not nearly as bad as it was. I lube my chain on a regular basis, but maybe I wasnt putting enough on.

I also got the alignment measured down to the millimeter which may have helped.

Went for a 300+ mile ride yesterday with no issues. Should be fine till winter.

on both sides of the axle are they both equal on each side??? they have those notches to mark???

Everytime I've seen this happen it has been because of either broken/missing teeth on a spocket (usually countershaft) or missing rollers on the chain.

I've seen it on 2 of my friends bikes, both 636's for some reason.

Someone tried to tell me this weekend that EVERY chain has a tight spot. He said thats what you're supposed to use to check the slack.

I didn't feel like arguing with him so I just let him babble. Any truth to that at all? I'm pretty sure I didn't have any tight spots when the chain was new.

i had the same problem w/ mine and i let it go thinking i could get away w/ it for another month or 2. Got about 500ft from my house one day got on it and it didnt go anywhere,. chain snapped as soon as i gave it gas and dumped the clutch. Luckily i wasnt cruising down the highway when this happened.

Good idea to get it taken care of before its too late. Like said above change the sprockets and chain.
