The History Boys
Most of you guys wont see this movie. Its an independent flick with a limited release. But if you can find it playing at your local art house cinema I recommend you take it in.
Its based on the Broadway play of the same name and its about a group of British school kids who are trying to get scholarships to Cambridge and Oxford. The grammar school they attend wants the kids to get into these colleges so they hire a tutor to help the boys pass the exams, interviews and essays. Along the way the boys learn how to apply all of the knowledge they have learned, not just the information they were supposed to have "learned" for a test.
There are also some homosexual moments in the movie that I could have done with out because as an American, it seems pointless and a frivilous part of the plot used only to garner awards, generate buzz and create controversy. To me it didnt advance the plot, because I have never been in that position or at a English Grammar school. However the British guy I saw it with says that it is a social commentary on the English grammar school system. I wont go into his explanation, but I felt it was put in because of Brokeback Mountain. The moments in question are the students willingly go for a ride on the professor's bike knowing full well that he is going to reach back at some point and grab their junk. Nothing more goes on, he just wants to cop a feel of their fully clothed junk at a stop sign or red light. In fact they argue about who is going to go for the ride and one kid, who isnt allowed to go, wonders if he did something wrong.
Overall though, its a great movie. Id give 3.5 out of 4 stars. If you can find it at your local art house theater I recommend it.
