Roger Lee to ride for American Honda/Moriwaki MOTO 2

American Honda Announces Additional Moto2 Team Details

Torrance, CA: Following an earlier release outlining American Honda's intention to participate in the Moto2 class at the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, August 27 to 29, American Honda now announces that the team will be led by Kevin Schwantz.

Schwantz, the 1993 500cc Grand Prix World Champion, has a wealth of racing knowledge and currently runs the Schwantz School, where riders can learn from the best aboard Honda CBR600RR machines. "It's an honor for me to be chosen as team manager," said Schwantz. "We've been using CBR600RRs for some time now at our schools, and I've ridden a Moto2 bike and it's very good. I watched the first three Moto2 races and I expect the racing to be just as good at Indy."

Led by Schwantz, the team will field a Honda-powered Moriwaki MD600 ridden by wild card entry Roger Lee Hayden.

Roger Lee Hayden has a solid history with American Honda, and a string of 12 national road race victories on 600cc machines en route to a Supersport championship. Along with his siblings Nicky and Tommy, the Hayden brothers are American racing royalty, and the Indy GP will give American fans another opportunity to see Roger racing on American soil. At 27, Hayden also qualifies to race as a wild card entry: Moto2 rules require all wild card riders to be 28 years old or younger.

"This is a great opportunity for me to race in front of my home crowd at a MotoGP event," said Roger, who is currently competing in the World Superbike Championship. "The Moto2 class is really competitive and I'm looking forward to jumping in the middle of it."

The team will be staffed by Erion Racing technicians led by Kevin Erion. Erion Racing has been American Honda's premier support team for more than 15 years, winning 16 national championships-many of them with Honda's CBR600 in the process. "We're excited to partner with American Honda again and participate in our first World-Championship event," said Kevin Erion.

The American Honda Indy GP Moto2 team will also benefit the Ride for Kids(r) (RFK) program and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation(r) (PBTF) through special fund-raising activities. At Indy, for example, Schwantz will lead the Lap of Champions, where 300 participants will join him in a lap around the track in a special fund-raiser that benefits the PBTF by raising funds to promote childhood brain tumor research.

At least he'll be on competitive machinery. That Kwak that he's riding in WSBK is garbage. I mean he's not going to be as fast as the top 3 right now, but he doesn't have a fighting chance on the Kwak. I mean look at where the other Kwak riders are: Tom Sykes is the highest ranked at 15th place. Vermeulen, a very good rider, is even further down the order and they're on the factory machine.

Schwantz running the team has to be a boon for him. He's been pining for an opportunity for so long. Funny that it's Honda throwing him a bone, when he's been with Suzuki for so long. But I guess since Hondas are in his school's stable, it makes sense. Should be a good show for Indy. Can't wait!

I wouldn't give him much chance, but hope to be wrong, the field of moto 2 if deep, just as much as WSB but one advantage is he at least will be on a Honda similar to everyone else so who knows.

This is a big chance for him to show what he is really capable of. Hope he doesn't blow it. But then again, evidently the only reason he didn't sign up for Moto2 in the first place was because of salary, so maybe it is his own damn fault, or he couldn't bring the sponsorship dollars required for the class.

When you guys say "Kawi is crap/not competitive", how bad can it be? I mean most of the SBK bikes are very close to each other in terms of performance, so why blame the machine? Or I am completely ignorant & the bike actually reduces a rider's performance?

Last year Spies brought the R1 in the limelight but this year Toseland & Crutchlow are no where near that. That doesn't mean something is wrong with the bike? Its the same bike that Spies rode.

At competitive levels like that, the bike makes a huge difference. Look at MotoGP. Capirossi is easily capable of podium finishes and wins, but it's impossible when you're already riding the bike for everything it has. The only person that would ever really have a chance of winning on a Suzuki in MotoGP is DeAngelis, because he'd crash into everyone and be the last man standing by the end of Turn 2.

so if it's all about the bike, someone PLEASE explain why the f*** Spies (MotoGP ROOKIE) is a podium contender and Edwards is waaaaaaaay down there sniffing exhaust fumes on a similar Tech 3 bike.

Who ever said it's all about the bike? But, Spies is on a full factory bike, Edwards isn't, so there's your difference.

Its not that black and white, and we all know Spies is exceptional. He will reach alien status by next season without a doubt. He's almost there with that podium stunt he pulled at Silverstone.

American Honda Moto2 Effort To Bear Drudi Performance Graphics

Torrance, CA: American Honda announces today that the graphic design schemes for the team's Moto2 effort at the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis GP, August 27 to 29, have been designed by world-renown artist Aldo Drudi, founder of Drudi Performance. The team's Moriwaki MD600 as well as the team gear will feature special design elements created specifically for this one-time Indy USGP event.

For decades, Drudi Performance has literally left its mark in motorsports. Beginning in the early 1980s, Drudi design schemes have adorned machine bodywork, leathers, racing suits and helmets in motorcycle racing as well as auto racing, including NASCAR. Commercially available Arai helmets have borne Drudi Performance graphics and the company has also designed motorcycle-riding apparel and motorcycling-related casual wear. In addition, participants in sports as diverse as bicycle racing, soccer, track & field and offshore racing have borne the handiwork of Drudi Performance. Most recently, Drudi designed the graphics for the 2010 Gresini Moto2 team.

Relative to Kevin Schwantz, team manager of the American Honda Moriwaki MD600 project, ties to Aldo Drudi run strong and deep. Drudi began working with Schwantz in 1991 when he designed the starburst helmet Schwantz started wearing in 1992. Drudi has continued designing Schwantz's helmets since that time. Schwantz was the first GP rider wearing a Drudi-designed helmet to win a World Championship.

Designed by Aldo Drudi, Hayden's leathers—they're real and they're spectacular. His name will be sewn on them, do not fret.

"To work with Kevin, who is a friend and a champion, on a project that American Honda is supporting, it was a given that I was honored to be asked to create the graphics," said Drudi. "This assignment has been particularly special to me because for a long time I have wanted to create a theme that focused on the stars and stripes of the USA, which turns out to be the perfect match for this project. It is a very exciting opportunity and a project that will be of the highest level."

American Honda plans to have Drudi-designed commemorative shirts and hats available to the public with all proceeds to benefit the Ride for Kids. Availability details to follow at a later date.

Good. RL deserves a better ride. Those WSB Kawi's are sucking a$$. Always back of the pack and they often crash trying to keep the pace.

Spies is riding on the SAME exact bike as Colin, which until Laguna Yamaha didn't update. AKA its the 2009 bike zero changes.

Spies is just that much better than Colin at this intersection of their careers.
Google the 'OntheThrottle' interview he did after the Germany round.
