Valentino Rossi to Use Aluminum Chassis at Aragon GP

THU, SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2011 @ 12:31 PM, BY JENSEN BEELER3 COMMENTS
HOME » RACING » VALENTINO ROSSI TO USE ALUMINUM CHASSIS AT ARAGON GP

Valentino Rossi finally put an end to the speculation today at the MotoGP pre-race press conference, and announced that Ducati Corse will use an aluminum chassis during the Aragon GP this weekend. First tested last week on the Ducati Desmosedici GP12, the FTR-built aluminum frame has improved the front end feeling for the Desmosedici, an issue that has plagued the Ducati all this season. Rossi will first use the new aluminum parts during Free Practice tomorrow, though the team hasn’t confirmed their use in the race just yet.
“We tested last week after the race, and it was not so bad,” said Rossi when talking about Ducati Corse’s post-Mugello test. “We tried something different on the bike to improve the front feeling and turning, and the lap times were not so bad. I was a bit faster than the last time, and basically the feeling was quite good, so we’re moving forward.”
When pressed about what changes Ducati made, and whether or not Rossi test the rumored aluminum frame, the nine-time World Champion was quick to correct. ”It is not a frame,” explained Rossi. “The philosophy of the Ducati is the same, but the front part of the bike is a bit different, and is in aluminum, and not in carbon like before. But about the material, it is a question of time. We have to work to try and understand how the bike and with aluminum you need a lot less time compared to the carbon. The bike improved a bit, but this is just the first step. We need to keep working to come back and fight for the front.”
From Rossi’s description in the press conference, the changes made to the GP11.1′s chassis sound similar to what will be found on the 2012 Ducati Superbike 1199. For its upcoming production Superbike, Ducati is using an aluminum version of its “frameless” chassis design, which doesn’t have the same weight savings as the carbon version previously used in MotoGP. There is also talk that because the aluminum headstock is directly attached to the top cylinder head, the metal translates the engine heat better to the intake, and thus warms the air as it comes into the airbox and eliminates any “cold air” effect.
What’s not clear with this announcement is whether Valentino Rossi will have to take a new motor, his seventh, in order to take advantage of the new chassis design. Because the GP11.1 uses an outwardly similar motor to the GP12, it is possible Rossi won’t have to dip beyond his motor allocation and start from the back of the grid. However, it’s not clear if the aluminum components require modifications to the GP12/GP11.1 motor to mount properly.
The testing results at Mugello were good news for American Nicky Hayden, though it seems unlikely that the former-World Champion will use the aluminum chassis parts at all this season. Talking to our friends at MotoMatters Hayden said, ”I spoke to Filippo [Preziosi] a couple of times, and it seems real positive. They’re pretty happy around there. So we’ll see how Valentino goes. They were pretty happy with how the test went. We’ll see how it translates on the race weekend, and we’ll see how Valentino goes with it.” When asked if he’d use the new parts, Hayden simply replied, ”I probably won’t be getting it this year.”

Too bad Rossi is starting from pit lane. He will have a lot of ground to make up, but I'm sure he can pick up a few spots. Will be interesting to see how it works out for him.

i hope spies can snag another podium.
with the times CS and DP are doing, i dunno if anyone will be able to keep with them if they continue to run like that.
battles for 3,4,5 should be good. we shall see what happens tomorrow!

I wonder if there will be a Repsol tradition this year?

Doohan - Criville (Eastern Creek 1996)

Hayden - Pedrosa (Estoril 2006)

Should be very exciting between Spies, Lorenzo, Simoncelli and Dovizioso.

I thought Rossi was going to storm his way to 6 or 7th but Crutchlow and Aoyama kept him at bay. Simo messed up his chance at podium. A lot of wrecks today too. Speed didn't mention it but did Abraham get a penalty for his pass on Hayden? The results had him dead last.

I was disappointed that Spies could''t hold on for a podium. He looked a little off today and not as well as he has been in the past few races. And the Repsol bikes were ugly as hell.

Abraham crashed out on the first corner, self inflicted high side.

Rossi's tires went off big time. A lot of people were suffering with tire issues today Spies, Pedrosa, Lorenzo, Simo.

not a bad race for gp. if it werent for the tire problems. it wouldve been a more interesting race for 3rd. 1st/2nd was a done deal for CS and DP. unless they crashed or had a huge mistake. noone else had the speed on their machines today.

but...moto2 is where its at today! what an exciting race! its too bad gp cant be as exciting.

Whats this tire problem some riders had?

If all riders use the same tires why does only some bike suffer?

noone bumped into hayden. there was one that was close and ended up crashing on the 1st lap. it was Dovi.
hayden came in on the inside into the same corner (turn 3).
dovi didnt anticipate that, tried to manuever/adjust to go around on the outside, and lost the front.

Different riders have different riding styles different bike setups and some riders conserve tires better then others. Also battling through the field tends to eat rubber faster than managing a large gap from the front. Aragon's surface was also extra abrasive this year (similar to Indy) so the same tires that lasted the race last year was not able to this year.

No, someone did with under 10 laps to go and really came close to wrecking him. I remember the announcers talking about him being Spaniard and trying too hard to get a good result in a home race. He cut under Hayden but ran it wide. Damn, it was 5am here when I was watching it so I don't really recall who but I do remember it and wondered if he would get a penalty for it.

Lorenzo had a faster pace even with worn tires so he was telling Spies to follow him and maybe help get back the lost spot to Simo.

I wouldn't say team orders. Lorenzo asked Spies to not counter attack, I don't think Yamaha (the team) had anything to do with that?

In either case from lap 9 to the end of the race Lorenzo was lapping faster then Ben and from lap 14 to the end of the race (with the exception of lap 16) Lorenzo was lapping faster then Pedrosa link. Hand wave or not I don't think Ben's tires would have allow him to keep that pace. Imho thats why Simo was able to make up that 6s gap and pass Ben.

The person your thinking of is Barbera. It was a VERY tough move and they did touch but was no more aggressive then VR and JL in Motegi under the bridge last year. Hayden was trying to shift gears when it happened and it did prevent him from getting good drive out of the corner onto the back straight.

That's Who! I was wrecking my brain thinking it over. Hmm, I guess in hindsight it wasn't so bad but I remember watching the replay thinking that was awfully close to taking Hayden down. It was a little aggressive for the position he was battling for though.

Is Bridgestone mailing it in? I mean hasn't it been more evident over the last 3-4 rounds that Bridgestone hasn't been bringing the right tires to the track? When a hard tire is demolished in 7-10 laps, that's horrible. If they're going to get tire degradation like that, let's just go back to the pre-control tire days. At least we'd get those Saturday Night specials that made racing awesome. I don't think these cost-cutting measures are actually cutting costs.

As like the other races, the battles in the second and third pack were more exciting than the lead group. And as always, the Moto2 race was much more palatable to watch. It's almost like this 800cc season can't end fast enough. I mean you feel it, because it's like they're trying to fabricate news. How much of the commentary has to be on the "twin spar aluminum frame" of the Ducati 11.1.1.1.1. Who cares? The bike still stinks and it's single-handedly thumping Rossi's reputation and whatever little reputation Nicky has.

I bet the problem with the Ducati is that because the engine is the main stress member, it's mass is too high in the bike. Even with the new frame that provides more front feel, the engine is still too high to transfer weight properly. Me thinks that Ducati will take JB's suggestion, use an FTR frame, drop that engine in a box, lower and back. I'm a huge Nicky fan and I almost think it'd be better for him to be on a satellite Honda than on the factory Ducati.
