Valencia test commences with Lorenzo on top

After his stunning win at Valencia in the final race of the season on Sunday it was Jorge Lorenzo who topped the timesheet again on Monday in the first day of 2014 ‘pre-season’ testing.

Lap times of course do not mean a great deal at this stage, with some riders swapping machinery, many tweaking set-up and some joining new teams, but Lorenzo set the standards again – with a 1’31.257 late in the day. That lap was quicker than anyone went in Sunday’s race and came on the 2013 YZR-M1, although Lorenzo also has a 2014 development Yamaha available this week.

On the other side of the Yamaha Factory Racing box Valentino Rossi spent the day working with new Crew Chief Silvano Galbusera. The Doctor’s best time of the day was just 0.093s off Lorenzo’s best, also coming on his 2013 bike, though he too is already using the 2014 development M1.

Repsol Honda’s new World Champion Marc Marquez and his colleague Dani Pedrosa were both at the circuit but did not test on Monday – though they are expected on track on Tuesday as the battle to stay ahead of Yamaha continues.

Stefan Bradl was the fastest Honda rider on track on Monday, using his RC213V from this season to set the third best time of the day – 0.5s off Lorenzo’s pace.

New Ducati recruit Cal Crutchlow has taken Italian Crew Chief Daniele Romagnoli with him from Tech 3 to the Italian factory Ducati and the pair were working alongside new Ducati Corse General Manager Gigi Dall’Igna for the first time on Monday.

Crutchlow matched Ducati’s Sunday race pace, and was sixth overall just over 0.1s (check) behind new Ducati teammate Andrea Dovizioso who was fifth best. Dovizioso lapped in a similar pace to fourth fastest rider of the day, Andrea Iannone on the Pramac Racing Ducati.

Ducati Test Team rider Michele Pirro was 0.6s behind Crutchlow in seventh, just ahead of Yonny Hernandez – who was confirmed today to remain as Iannone’s teammate in the Pramac Racing Team permanently during the 2014 season.

Moto2 World Champion Pol Espargaro rode his first laps on his new Monster Yamaha Tech 3 MotoGP bike, in tenth spot on the timesheet, with a lap around two seconds off Lorenzo’s pace. His new teammate Bradley Smith sat things out and expects to get through all his test work for this week on Tuesday.

The new Honda RCV1000R was used for the first time by the GO&FUN Honda Gresini team as Scott Redding also got his 2014 MotoGP preparations underway, the Englishman ending up 11th overall. Cristian Gabarrini from HRC got Redding's initial feedback on the new prototype, which the teams will adapt to over the winter.

Hiroshi Aoyama officially joined the Power Electronics Aspar team on Monday, but with Aspar only having one of their new Hondas ready for today, Nicky Hayden will have to wait until Tuesday to ride it. Aoyama was ninth best on the timesheet, 1.8s down on Lorenzo’s P1 pace.

Mike di Meglio has not ridden since the Brno Moto2™ race due to serious injury, but he was back on track today testing with the Avintia Blusens team.

Randy de Puniet should be testing with the PBM team on Tuesday as they look to confirm direction for next season, with the 2014-spec ART being prepared for the Frenchman on Monday.

The testing action at the Ricardo Tormo circuit will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday (10am-5pm both days). Live video coverage will be available again through moto GP com on Tuesday (11am-2pm).

Valencia MotoGP test times - Tuesday (Final)

Following Sunday's Valencia MotoGP season finale, an official test session is being held at the circuit from Monday to Wednesday.

The test marks the first appearance for Cal Crutchlow at Ducati, Nicky Hayden at Aspar, Moto2 world champion Pol Espargaro at Tech 3 and former title rival Scott Redding at Gresini.

Redding, Hayden and Hiroshi Aoyama are riding the new Open class Honda Production Racer, with Hayden - who sat out Monday due to limited machine numbers - getting his first ride on the RCV1000R today.

The new privateer Forward Racing Yamaha made its public debut on Tuesday in the hands of Aleix Espargaro and Colin Edwards, when new world champion Marc Marquez and Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa were also back on track after skipping day one.

Marquez led for almost the entire day, lapping under his new official pole record. The 20-year-old - riding with a special helmet design - saved the 2014 RC213V with his knee and elbow after a big lowside moment at turn six, shortly after 1pm.

Like many riders, Marquez made a last push - clocking his best time of the day on the 75th of 76 laps. Yamaha's title runner-up Jorge Lorenzo moved into second, while Pedrosa reclaimed third from LCR's Stefan Bradl.

Valentino Rossi was working with his new crew chief Silvano Galbusera for the first time, while former Aprilia Racing boss Gigi Dall'Igna is present in his new role as general manager of Ducati Corse.

Former Aspar rider Randy de Puniet made his PBM debut on Tuesday, as the British team seeks to reach an agreement with Aprilia for 2014. The test was briefly red flagged due to a late fall for PBM regular Michael Laverty.

The 2014 rules will see the Factory bikes lose a further litre of race fuel relative to the Open machines, raising the difference to four litres. The Open bikes must run the full control ECU system, while the Factory entries can use their own software.

The final day of testing begins at 10am on Wednesday, but some teams - including Yamaha - are expected to pack up this evening.

Lap times as of 5pm, the end of the third and final day at the post-race Valencia MotoGP test.
Following Sunday's Valencia MotoGP season finale, an official test session was held at the circuit from Monday to Wednesday.

The test marked the first appearance for Cal Crutchlow at Ducati, Nicky Hayden at Aspar, Moto2 world champion Pol Espargaro at Tech 3 and former title rival Scott Redding at Gresini.

The new Open class machines from Honda and Yamaha also made their official debuts.

New world champion Marc Marquez, who like Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa sat out day one, was fastest on days two and three. Honda and Yamaha both had prototype versions of next year's Factory machines at the test.

Wednesday's track action began at 10am, but some teams - including Yamaha - concluded testing on Tuesday.

The next official MotoGP test is not until Sepang in early February, although private testing is allowed until the end of this month...

Espargaro delighted to begin MotoGP journey



Moto2™ World Champion Pol Espargaro commenced his MotoGP™ adventure on Monday at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia, getting his first try of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike which he will ride in 2014.

The popular youngster from the outskirts of Barcelona was ecstatic after trying the Yamaha YZR-M1 and his first MotoGP outing was the perfect remedy to the disappointment of his crash in his last Moto2 race before making the move into the big time.

Espargaro was welcomed into Herve Poncharal’s Tech 3 set up by engineer Nicolas Goyon and given an introduction to how things work with a 1000cc racing prototype, before putting in 45 laps of the 4km Valencia track.

The MotoGP rookie put in a decent 1’33.187 best time on his 32nd lap, to end the day 10th on the timesheet – less than two seconds down on pace setting former World Champion Jorge Lorenzo.

He enthused, "It’s so different, the feeling. Now we are in MotoGP with a different box, everything has changed but I’m so happy. I have enjoyed the day a lot and these will be the best days of my life, to try a MotoGP machine. It’s amazing. The power and the brakes are incredible, the tyre too. I enjoyed it a lot but we have to be a lot faster because we were two seconds behind Jorge and Valentino (Rossi)."

Espargaro added, "Immediately I could feel this is a very professional and high-level team with fantastic support from Yamaha. The YZR-M1 is incredible and today I just tried to learn as much as possible. The power of the engine is something you notice immediately and today I just did as many laps as I could with the aim to get a feel for the bike."

Valencia MotoGP Test: Pol Espargaro 'This is the result I dreamed of'

Pol Espargaro and Monster Yamaha Tech 3 might be waiting to find out if they will use the seamless shift gearbox in MotoGP next season, but the recently crowned Moto2 world champion has certainly made a seamless adaptation to the premier class.

The 22-year-old Spaniard was in high spirits at the end of his debut MotoGP test, which saw him quicker than team-mate Bradley Smith for the early part of the final day, on his way to fifth fastest.

Espargaro was 1.2s from world champion Marc Marquez and just 0.5s slower than multi 2013 race winner Dani Pedrosa by the time he concluded testing.

"That was the result that I dreamed of! My dream was to be close to the factory bikes and to the leader but it was a great result today. We didn't do many laps today because the bike is perfect and I didn't want to crash it!" said Espargaro.

When asked what he learned from his first days on the YZR-M1, Espargaro said that he had been focusing on the electronics package and trying to learn about how the feeling on the bike changed as they adjusted some of the settings.

"We finished the test with a used tyre and tried some electronic changes to see what happened when we used less anti-wheelie and more traction control. We tested a lot of things but still I need more laps to learn how to ride the bike with my style and know the electronic systems on the bike."

There is still plenty to learn, but Espargaro is confident that the path ahead is clear.

"It's difficult in three days to change everything. I have to do more laps and adapt more to the MotoGP bike and I need more experience to feel the movements and to be faster.

“So today we made a good step. We know how we can improve and that is good because sometimes you are lost and not able to improve, but we know the way to improve by working with electronics and picking up the bike.

“We know what we have to do and how to do it."

Rossi and Galbusera pleased with first steps





Following their first day of work together in the Yamaha Factory Racing box Valentino Rossi and his new Crew Chief Silvano Galbusera reacted positively to the testing they carried out at Valencia.

Rossi finished second on Monday’s timesheet, less than 0.1s behind pace setting teammate Jorge Lorenzo as both riders spent some time evaluating the 2014 YZR-M1 alongside a 2013 reference machine.

Lorenzo and Rossi also made some laps with the new standard ECU that will be used as part of the 2014 regulations.

Rossi’s best time of 1'31.350 was registered with his 2013 bike and was significantly quicker than his fastest lap of 1'31.987 from Sunday’s race - as he adapted to working with incoming technician Galbusera, who replaces Jeremy Burgess.

Before the final race of 2013 at Valencia Rossi had stunned the paddock with his announcement that Burgess and he were to separate after 14 years of working together.

On Monday evening Rossi stated, “Today was very emotional, it was something different. We were working a long time with Jeremy so today was like a restart from the beginning but I’m happy and I’m satisfied with the day. I know Silvano already from Superbike as I did some testing in 2010 with the R1 together with him and I liked the way we worked. It’s just the first day but anyway it was a good day for me, I was faster and we worked well on the bike.”

He continued, “The condition of the track and the weather were perfect so I enjoyed it a lot. We worked with both bikes, I liked the new one a lot, it has good power exit from the corners and the chassis gives a good feeling on the front so the first impression is very positive.”

On his new job, meanwhile, Galbusera enthused, “For me it’s a great chance to work with him, because everybody knows the level of Valentino. The first contact is just to learn the bike and understand Valentino, before making changes and working like a normal technician.”

“It’s been good, the Japanese engineers prepared the test schedule. I don’t know the bike yet, so we just followed the test plan that we had in mind. The results have been good and tomorrow we’ll keep working in the same way, working on some of the critical weak points which Valentino has recently identified. Things don’t look too bad.”

Man it must feel so amazing as a youngster to ride a MotoGP machine for the first time and realize you are now racing at the highest level in the world. What a life. Best of luck to those guys, looking forward to some fantastic racing next year.

Edwards and Espargaro excited by new package



Colin Edwards and Aleix Espargaro teamed up for the first time on Tuesday as NGM Mobile Forward Racing ran its 2014 machine in Valencia.

Edwards remains with the Italian squad for a third year, whereas Espargaro moves across from Spain’s Power Electronics Aspar. For next season, Forward will be competing with a FTR-Yamaha package, with the Yamaha components of frame, engine and swingarm being provided on a lease basis under new regulations for 2014.

“It was a pleasure!” reported Edwards. “Obviously, I have a long history with Yamaha and it was nice to get ‘back home’. It feels good and the bike is good. We are still building and obviously had some initial comments today about seating position and handlebar position; whenever you are building a bike, you always run into these things, but it is feeling good.

“The geometry feels good, I’m happy with it, but I definitely had an issue with the electronics. We didn’t use something we have spent all year developing…you might ask yourself why: with Yamaha we have to take it one step at a time, let’s say, and they have a programme they wanted to put in and get some initial feedback on.”

As Edwards proudly described the bike as a ‘freight train’, Espargaro’s running was also limited but the Granollers rider was similarly impressed with the package.

“I’m happy,” he said. “I only did 17 laps today because we only have one bike and Colin was using it in the afternoon – so Colin used it this afternoon and I will continue working tomorrow. The first impression is really, really good. The bike is working really well and FTR has done a really good job in just four weeks’ time.

“We have a lot of work to do on electronics and also on the FTR things, such as the fairing, but after the first day and only half an hour on the track I’m really happy.”

Forward’s programme will continue on Wednesday, although forecasters are continuing to predict that rain will fall at the Ricardo Tormo circuit.

Looking beyond forward to the 2014 season; loving the new blood, the returning racers, the changing teams. Will be one hell of a season.

Experienced MotoGP veteran Colin Edwards was heartened following his first outing on the FTR Yamaha he will ride in the new open class in 2014.

The NGM Forward Racing rider shared the bike with Aleix Espargaro in Valencia, completing 34 laps and setting a fastest time of 1m 33.149s as he finished behind his Spanish team-mate in 16th position.

Edwards, a former Yamaha factory rider, said: “I am happy to be back on a Yamaha, it feels good, the bike is good. We are still building the bike with FTR, we have some initial comments from today – seating position, handlebar position – these are some of the things that when you are building a bike you have to work on but feeling pretty good about it.

“The geometry of the bikes feels good, maybe a couple of tweaks here and there but I am happy with it.

“I definitely had issues with the electronics today, it is something that we spent all this year developing and didn't get to use, you might ask yourself why,” he added.

“Obviously with Yamaha we have to take it one step at a time and they have a programme that they want to put in, get some initial feedback into it, they know the bikes works good on that programme, so we had to run that.”

NGM Forward Racing's Aleix Espargaro was full of praise for the new open class FTR Yamaha M1 after giving the machine its debut in Valencia.

Esparago, who dominated the CRT class this season, said the performance of the production racer exceeded his expectations as he lapped in 1m 32.847s to finish ahead of team-mate Colin Edwards in 15th position after the pair shared the bike at the Spanish circuit.

“I am happy; I did not expect the bike to be this good right from the start,” he said.

“I just did 17 laps today because we only have one bike and Colin used it in the afternoon, I will continue working tomorrow.

“The first impression is really good, the bike is working well, FTR did a really good job in just four weeks time so I am really happy,” Espargaro added.

“We have a lot to do in terms of the electronics and in other little things but it being the first day today out on the bike.

“To be the first day, I was able to push a few laps and it means we are doing things well.”

Hayden 'really happy' after Honda bow

Nicky Hayden made the most of his first ride on Honda's new MotoGP production racer to clock up 76 laps in Valencia as the American rider made an impressive bow on the RCV1000R.

Hayden saved his best until last, lapping in 1m 32.567s on his final lap to slot into 13th position on the time sheets ahead of Pramac Ducati's Yonny Hernandez and the NGM Forward Racing Yamahas of Coin Edwards and Aleix Espargaro.

With poor weather forecast for the final day of the test in Spain on Wednesday, Hayden didn't want to waste any time getting to grips with the Honda after Hiroshi Aoyama had tested the bike on Monday.

The 2006 world champion declared himself 'really happy' with his first impressions of the new machine as he looks forward to a fresh challenge in the premier class next season.

“It was exciting to get to work with a new team and a new bike. This is a new project and there is a long road ahead but that's what makes it so interesting,” said Hayden.

“I really enjoyed my first contact with the bike. There is a lot to learn and I need to build a relationship with the mechanics but I am really happy with today for a first shakedown.

“The team has helped me a lot and I had a lot of engineers around me all day. We can see how much work there is to do but the base is solid,” he added.

“We couldn't have had better conditions to ride in today. It would have been nice to finish with some stronger lap times but overall we're happy.”

Nicky Hayden returns to Honda



UPDATE 2:Nicky Hayden finished the day with a best lap time of 1m 32.576s, good enough for 13th out of the 20 riders. Hayden, who beat his best race lap time on the Ducati, was 2.040s behind Honda's Marc Marquez but quickest of the 'Open' class riders.

UPDATE 1: By 3pm Nicky Hayden had improved to a 1m 32.582s, moving him to eleventh on the timesheets, a fraction behind former Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso.

Nicky Hayden rode his first Honda MotoGP laps since 2008 during testing at Valencia on Tuesday.

Hayden raced for the factory Honda team from his 2003 grand prix debut until joining Ducati for 2009 - taking 23 podiums, three race wins and the final 990cc title.

The American, ninth in this year's standings, is returning to Honda on the new privateer 'Open' class RCV1000R run by the Aspar team.

As of 2pm, with three hours of Tuesday testing remaining, Hayden had completed 36 laps, the best of which was 2.344s behind Repsol Honda's newly crowned world champion Marc Marquez, placing Hayden 15th out of the 20 riders.

Hayden's 1m 33.023s lap time matches new team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama's Monday best. Hayden's fastest Ducati lap in Sunday's grand prix was a 1m 32.764s.

The Honda 'Production Racer' is based on the title-winning RC213V, but without the seamless shift gearbox and pneumatic valves. Like all non-factory entries it must also use the full standard ECU package, but has four litres of extra race fuel available and the option of twelve instead of five engines changes during the year.

After five tough years at Ducati, which yielded just three podiums, Hayden has 'Reset & Push Harder' written on his helmet and fuel tank for this week's test.

Aspar won both seasons of the former 'CRT' privateer class with Aleix Espargaro and Aprilia machinery.

Aspar debut for Hayden on Honda RCV1000R



Nicky Hayden clocked up 76 laps in Tuesday Valencia testing and saved his best lap until last.

After Hiroshi Aoyama tested the Aspar Team's new Honda machine yesterday, clocking a best time of 1’33.020, Tuesday was the turn of his new teammate Hayden to do so.

With poor weather forecast for Wednesday the American did not want to waste a minute of available track time and he threw his leg over the new machine no sooner had pit-lane opened at 10am.

By around 2pm he had dropped his lap times to 1’32.582 but with his 76th and final lap of the day he went even faster with a 1’32.576. Although that is over two seconds off Marc Marquez test pace, these are early days for the rider with his new team and new package.

The Kentuckian rider enthused: “This is a new project and there is a long road ahead but that's what makes it so interesting. I really enjoyed my first contact with the bike. There is a lot to learn and I need to build a relationship with the mechanics but I am really happy with today for a first shakedown.”

Crutchlow reflects on first Ducati Team day



Englishman Cal Crutchlow tested the Ducati Desmosedici in Valencia on Monday and spent the day working with his new team, as preparations for next season commenced in earnest.

Crutchlow, who continues with Crew Chief Daniele Romagnoli with whom he previously worked at Monster Yamaha Tech3, now looks to improve the fortunes of the Italian factory in the premier class. Alongside existing Ducati Team rider Andrea Dovizioso - previously his Tech3 teammate, in 2012 - Crutchlow will also work with new Ducati Corse General Manager Gigi Dall’Igna.

“Different!” he summed up his opening day. “The Ducati was something I wasn’t used to. After three years, a different manufacturer is always going to feel alien, but I enjoyed it and it was good fun. Working with the Ducati crew is very different to what I’m used to but good, so we’re excited about the next few days.”

During Monday’s test, Crutchlow put in 39 laps on this year’s Ducati, adapting to the machine and eventually notching up the sixth best time of the day on his 36th tour.

“As with anything, I’m used to something else, so it just doesn’t do what I’m used to but maybe that’s just the way this bike works and I have to adapt to it,” the Coventry-born rider continued. “We definitely found some positives with the bike: with the braking on the straight, we are able to stop in a lot shorter a distance than I was yesterday or the day before. Also, the acceleration and gearbox feel a lot better to what I’m used to. There were also some negatives but that is why we were giving the good feedback to the Ducati guys. Dovi and I seemed to be saying very similar things, which is good, so they can create a project for next year.”

Crutchlow’s 1'32.054 quickest time compared favorably to his best race lap from Sunday on the Tech3 Yamaha (1'32.369) and was just over one tenth of a second slower than the efforts of Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing).

Cal Crutchlow blamed a lack of front-end grip after a second day spill at the Valencia MotoGP test on the factory Ducati.

Crutchlow was unable to better his time from Monday as he ended the day in 11th position behind Andrea Iannone on the Pramac Ducati with a time of 1m 32.114s.

Despite the minor setback, the British star felt the second day of the shakedown was a positive experience overall.

“Obviously we're just getting to grips with the Ducati, riding around doing as much as possible. We didn't do a lot of laps, but made a lot of changes,” he said.

“The team's working good, they're listening to my comments a lot, and Gigi [Dall'Igna] is here gathering information. It was a more challenging day for me today, but positive in the end.

“We didn't go as fast as yesterday, but would've gone faster as we changed the bike really drastically at the end of the day and seemed to have found something, but it was a compromise, as I had rear grip but little front grip and crashed,” added Crutchlow.

“I think we could've been in the mid-31s if we had pushed.”

Andrea Dovizioso, meanwhile, fared best of the Ducati riders as he ended the session in eighth position on the GP13.

Dovizioso, whose best lap time was 1m 31.661s, tried an updated chassis and used a new fairing he initially tested on Monday.

He also experimented with updated electronics settings to cope with the reduced fuel-capacity limit for 2014.

“We tested a new frame today, but there isn't really much difference so we didn't improve a lot. We also tested a different fairing and some different settings, things we've already tested but this time to give feedback to Gigi.

“The lap time is quite fast, but everyone was quite fast because the conditions were good. At the end it was difficult to make a lap time because the sun was very low.

“I'm happy about the lap time at the end but the bike is similar to during the weekend.”

I subscribed to BT Sports yesterday so i could watch the practice sessions and next years racing..

I know these are early days and you can't read to much into their times ect but i was impressed with P, Espargo, he's looking good... Im routing for SR but with his injuries he needs a little time.......

Dall’Igna to create closer factory-race track connection


One of the key points made by incoming Ducati Corse General Manager Luigi Dall’Igna on his first day in his new role was that a closer relationship must be forged between Ducati’s Borgo Panigale HQ and the staff working at the racetrack.

With Cal Crutchlow also joining Ducati on Monday and bringing Italian technician Daniele Romagnoli with him from Tech 3, there were plenty of new faces in the Ducati box at Valencia and Dall’Igna believes greater communication between all parties is the way forward.

The Italian explained, “It’s really important the connection between the people at the track and the people ‘at home’. We develop the bike at home and at the moment it seems like this connection is not the best. I would like to improve that area.”

Going on to describe his first steps with Ducati at the circuit, he continued, “Monday was my first day at the track as General Manager of Ducati Corse, and I’m getting to know and appreciate the working situation here. I already had an idea from the few days I spent in Borgo Panigale, because there, too, I found the technical level to be very high and the staff to have a lot of potential.”

“Now we have begun the practical part that will help us to begin working on the bike and define a strategy that will enable Ducati to improve and return to a competitive level. It’s still early to say anything about time scales and preparing more detailed plans, but I think we’re starting on the right foot.”

Dall’Igna also revealed that Ducati’s new machinery for 2014 will be introduced at the Sepang tests in February next year, once the winter testing ban concludes, but the pace of development progress the Italian manufacturer can make before and after that remains to be seen.

Valencia MotoGP Test: Suppo 'Pedrosa unlucky not to be a contender'

“It's easy to see that at the end of the season he would have been fighting for the championship in Valencia” - Livio Suppo.

Dani Pedrosa's MotoGP championship challenge was derailed by two accidents in 2013.

The first was a highside on Saturday morning in Germany, which saw the 28-year-break his collarbone and miss the race, the second an incident with team-mate and eventual champion Marc Marquez at Aragon.

Sachsenring had always been a successful circuit for Pedrosa, winning for the last two years. But the non-score and resulting fifth place while injured at Laguna Seca the following week cost him dearly in the championship chase - Marquez winning both races.

The clash between the Repsol Honda riders in September's Aragon Grand Prix, when Marquez' clutch lever tagged a rear wheel sensor cable on Pedrosa's RCV, then left Pedrosa with another non-score.

Championships can hinge on luck and for Dani Pedrosa this year again saw good luck in short supply.

Livio Suppo, Repsol Honda's Team Principal, spoke to the media about Pedrosa's season during testing at Valencia on Wednesday. The Italian felt his rider was unlucky not to be in the final round title fight with Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo.

"Unfortunately Dani has been very unlucky because with almost no crashes [this year] he got injured in the Sachsenring," said Suppo. "It was a stupid crash, he wasn't pushing too much it was just cold tyres, and then Aragon was the worst luck. The [wheel sensor] cable has been in this position for many years and nothing ever happened.

"At these two races, that I think he would have been able to win or finish second at, it's easy to see that at the end of the season when he was just 34 points behind Marc that he would have been fighting for the championship in Valencia and it would have been like Moto3 with three riders fighting for the championship in Valencia.

“Still Dani's potential remains high and we're confident that next year he'll be in the same position [to fight for the title]."

2013 marked the sixth time that Pedrosa has finished in the top three of the MotoGP standings.

Business as usual for new champion Marquez

New MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez wasted no time as he powered straight to the top of the times at the Valencia test after skipping the opening day in Spain.

Marquez rode an RC213V used in mid-season alongside a new machine provided by Honda especially for the test, setting the fastest lap time overall in 1m 30.536s on his 75th lap of 77.

The 20-year-old said there was little difference between the two prototypes but plans to focus on one machine on the final day of the shakedown on Wednesday.

“After the celebrations, we were back on the bike today and I felt comfortable from the beginning,” said Marquez.

“Today's testing was important, because we gathered a lot of data and tried out two different bikes: the prototype that we had already ridden at Misano, and a new one brought in especially for this test.

“They are fairly similar and we were able to make a few improvements, but we still have some changes to configure,” he added.

“We set good times with both bikes and were consistent with our pace. Tomorrow we will focus on just one machine and work on setting it up in more detail.”

“Today we mixed our testing between the 2013 and 2014 bikes. The track conditions were good and there was a lot of grip, so we were able to put in a lot of laps,” he said.

“We found some references with the new bike, as there are already a few changes – for example, the ECU, which is the same for everyone,” added Pedrosa.

Tired' Redding limits track time on day two

Scott Redding wrapped up his second day of testing on the Gresini Honda RCV1000R early as the young British protégé continues to battle pain in his injured arm.

Former Moto2 star Redding, who was involved in a massive spill at Phillip Island, opted to limit his time on track during day two of the Valencia MotoGP test, completing 23 laps and setting a best time of 1m 34.541s that left him in 19th position on the time sheets.

“Today wasn't easy because I am still tired from the race and the amount of laps I did yesterday on a bike that has so much more power than I am used to, so we decided to finish early,” said Redding.

“In the few laps I did manage we worked well and I can tell this is a professional team with competent and well prepared staff.

“We have started to work in a good way together and now I just want to focus on being ready for the winter tests in Malaysia.”

Team boss Fausto Gresini added: “As far as Scott is concerned his first contact with the team has been positive and it's a real shame he hasn't been able to do many laps today because of his arm.

“Anyway, he had a good day yesterday and now he knows what MotoGP is all about, he has time to get fit again before we start our real work together at Sepang.”

Bautista hails new suspension, brakes package

Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista was back on track at the Valencia MotoGP test after taking a rest day on Monday.

Bautista posted the fifth quickest time in 1m 31.208s as the Spaniard finished behind LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl and ahead of Bradley Smith on the Yamaha Tech 3.

He used the second day of the official test in Spain to evaluate new a Showa front suspension and Nissin brakes package, but won't ride the 2014 Honda until Wednesday.

“It has been a positive day and we have been able to try a lot of new parts with some good results,” said Bautista.

“We tried a new front fork that Showa brought here and gathered a lot of information that should be useful in the next test.

“Nissin have also brought a new brakes package that worked well so it has been a good day and now I am looking forward tomorrow, when I will get the chance to ride the 2014 bike.”
