Silly Season.....2015

I figured we could start our own little version of silly season for dot net. What better way to start it than with Van Halen and Pedrosa.

With Marc Marquez already signed up for 2015 and 2016, and Valentino Rossi on the verge of penning a new deal with Yamaha for two more years, attention is turning to Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.
Will Lorenzo want to stay with Yamaha or switch to Honda? Will Pedrosa be prepared to take a pay cut or head off to a different factory? All these are thing we will learn over the coming weeks.

Pedrosa’s case is particularly interesting. Some well-informed sources are starting to report on his options for the future. According to the Spanish magazine Motociclismo, Dani Pedrosa has been offered a substantial pay cut by Honda, with a base salary cut from something in the region of 6 million euros a season to 1.5 million euros, with a very generous bonus scheme for winning races and the championship. But Suzuki have also shown an interest in Pedrosa. The Japanese factory needs a winning rider to help make their new bike fully competitive, times set by Randy de Puniet are so far lagging a second or more behind the factory Hondas and Yamahas.

Right now, only four riders look capable of winning – in fact, since 2008, only six riders have won, with Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, and Valentino Rossi taking multiple wins, Ben Spies being the anomaly with a single victory at Assen. If Suzuki wants a rider with a proven track record, then Dani Pedrosa is almost its only option.
It is worth remembering here that although Pedrosa has not won a MotoGP championship yet, he is still one of the most successful riders in the history of the sport.

Pedrosa is eighth on the list of all-time winners, in both MotoGP and all classes, and has three titles in the junior classes to his name. He has more wins that Wayne Rainey, and has regularly beaten Marquez, Lorenzo, and Rossi, as well as his former teammate Stoner. On any Sunday, Dani Pedrosa is a candidate for victory.
Pedrosa knows this, and knows that Suzuki needs him more than he needs them. According to German-language website Speedweek, Pedrosa has demanded 8 million euros to ride for the Hamamatsu factory.
Given that this would be a pay rise for Pedrosa, that is a sizable sum. Especially given that Pedrosa is being outclassed by his teammate, and has yet to win a MotoGP title. Signing Pedrosa is no guarantee of success.
So is this a mark of extreme arrogance on the part of Pedrosa? Unlikely. Pedrosa has always been a surprisingly modest man, at least by the standards which elite athletes are measured by. Is it just Pedrosa’s way of politely turning Suzuki down, knowing that they would never be willing to pay that much for his services? Possibly, though like all top riders, Pedrosa has a clear sense of direction, and what he does and does not want to do. There is perhaps another explanation for Pedrosa’s salary demands, which has a particular logic to it. It needs explaining with an example from another field altogether.

Back in the early 1980s, many rock bands were known for their increasingly extravagant riders, clauses attached to their contracts dictating what food, drink, and other supplies and accessories were to be present backstage at their performances.
The most extreme example was said to be rock band Van Halen, who demanded that there was to be a bowl of M&Ms present in their dressing room, with all of the brown M&Ms removed. The contract explicitly specified that if they found a single brown M&M in that bowl of candy, they would be entitled to cancel the concert while still being paid in full.
At the time, this was derided as an example of the extraordinary arrogance of modern rock bands, yet Van Halen had very good reasons for putting the brown M&M clause in their contract. They were putting on massive stage shows featuring huge lighting and pyrotechnic rigs in places, where comparable bands had never performed.

Those rigs needed very specific power and safety facilities for them to function properly, and a very thick contract was provided specifying the complete technical requirements in great detail. If the venue did not do everything right, musicians, crew and audience could all face severe and possibly fatal danger.
Checking the bowl of candy was a quick way of seeing whether the contract had been read and complied with, if the band found a brown M&M, then they ran a full check of the rest of the venue. Inevitably, they would find other, dangerous breaches of the contract.
What does this have to do with Dani Pedrosa and Suzuki? The Japanese factory has had only limited success in Grand Prix racing, securing just two championships in the past 21 years: one with Kevin Schwantz in 1993, and the other with Kenny Roberts Jr in 2000.

The bike has never been truly competitive, and every rider who ever raced for the factory has complained that the lack of success was down to a lack of investment. The factory stubbornly followed their own path, never spending enough to catch up to Honda and Yamaha.

Well it's official, Dovizioso and Crutchlow are staying with Ducati to 2016, and 2015 respectively.

Maverick Vinales signed a three year deal with Suzuki.

Rumour has it Bradl might end up into Moto2

Aleix to LCR to ride a Factory Honda.

Crutchlow officially out of Ducati, possibly announcing today that he's taking Bradl's spot at LCR on the factory ride for Honda. Crutchlow on Honda is going to be awesome!

Also Iannone getting the promotion to factory Duc status. Well deserved and can't wait to see how he progresses with the bike really being built around him.

That and he's not getting any younger. Dovi is putting a lot of faith in that 2015 Desmo being better than the current version, but CC couldn't do it. Too good to sit back and hope that the bike is better soon. Now he can ride a bike that actually suits his style, much like Redding (who needs to take Bautista's ride).

I like to see Brits do well but Cal needs to learn how to stop moaning and get on with it...

Cal being honest is refreshing. You don't want robots (Lorenzo) as the only people in the sport.

Disagree. Lorenzo whines and moans a lot, but Cal does just as much. He complained all last year when he was on the Tech3 Yamaha that he didn't get the same support as the factory riders and wanted a factory ride. Now on a factory bike he has complained all year about the problems on the Ducati. Not saying it isn't warranted, but he's been pretty unprofessional with his whining on both rides in motogp. IMO, he's jumping ship at the wrong time, Luigi Dall'Igna is making strides with the Ducati and that Desmo 15 could be the most competitive they've been in awhile.

Yeah I get that. But that wasn't my point. He didn't bitch all of 2013 that he didn't have a good bike or that he didn't have a competitive bike. He bitched that he didn't have the factory support he wanted for that bike. He knew the Ducati was a POS when he signed with them which was before Luigi Dall'Igna. They've gotten better since he signed. Let's call it what it is. Crutchlow wanted factory money. Don't hate him for it. He got it but, now he's a satellite rider, again. Be prepared for the whining about lack of factory support again when he fails to be competitive again next year.

Cal should have stayed for that extra year to try out the new Ducati, if it sucks then he could probably still get a ride with LCR (especially considering their potential expanding to two machines. But if he doesn't do well on the Honda, and HRC decides they don't want to keep him after a year, it'll be hello again WSBK.

Lorenzo complained because he knew that Yamaha wasn't doing its best. Rightfully so.

Apparently there will be a new headmaster in charge of the new ducati bike, and I hope the suzuki bike will be competitive. interesting to see how aprilia turns out... bunch of negative reception saying alvaro was a waste of a seat..

They want a 'high profile' Australian in the championship to promote the sport further down under; not to mention TV rights and all that. Of course, what the hell did Miller accomplish yet? Nothing special IMO. His antics and 'jackass' personality is what is garnering the attention more than anything. Fenati, Bastianini and Rins deserve at least the same amount of attention.

I think it's too early for Miller - I think he will struggle quite a bit in the premier class. He's not exactly dominating Moto3, and I think as usual, it will come down to the last race or two, with a good chance Miller doesn't take the championship. He's young, so I'm not sure why he wouldn't take the time to improve his race craft so he really can compete in MotoGP.

Oh wait, yes I do - $$$$$$$!

I think this is similar to college kids leaving early to go pro - get the money now, or get more seasoning and take a chance on getting hurt, or not improving, and not getting the money at all.

Rossi says it all re Miller "he's very brave" i wish him well, but it will be a major transition to say the least

Petrucci will join the team to ride alongside Yonny Hernandez next season. The Italian has come back from a fractured left wrist this season, sustained in a crash at Jerez - and on Sunday the Octo IodaRacing Team rider produced one of his best rides of the year to finish 11th at Aragon.

Petrucci commented, “I am very happy to have reached an agreement with Pramac Racing, a team that has helped to promote the development of young riders. I am also proud and extremely motivated for the chance to ride a Ducati. I will try to give everything to make the most out of this opportunity for which I thank Pramac Racing. I also wanted to thank Giampiero Sacchi for giving me the opportunity to start racing at the highest level in MotoGP.”
