Introduction:

Introduction: Car and bike races have been held on closed public roads in the area around the town of Chemnitz, Germany since the 1920s and were still taking place until as recently as 1990. It was decided, however, that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new circuit was built five miles west of Chemnitz in 1996. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport safety station, Sachsenring first hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have taken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001. Numerous tight corners make it one of the slower tracks on the calendar but there is never any shortage of close racing action.

Pramac’s Campinoti: ‘If Iannone went, Bradl could be an option’
Speaking exclusively with ***********, Pramac Racing Director Paolo Campinoti looks into possible movement on the MotoGP™ rider market for 2015. He all but confirms Yonny Hernandez, discusses Andrea Iannone’s possibilities of switching to Ducati Team and does not hide his interest in Stefan Bradl…
Pramac Racing has enjoyed a strong start to the season, thanks to performances from both Iannone and Hernandez. However, it has been the Italian who has shone on several notable occasions, not least in qualifying – such as at his home Grand Prix in Italy, when he qualified on the front row of the Mugello grid.

“It’s very positive, from every point of view,” Campinoti comments. “We have grown in terms of results and both of our riders have demonstrated signs of growth and maturity. But we are not going to stop here. We are now working on having an even better second half to the year than the first.”

Delighted with the campaign to date, Campinoti also stresses the importance of the future and continues to keep close tabs on how he will structure the team in 2015, starting with Colombian Yonny Hernandez who is in his first full season with Pramac:

“We have an option to renew with him and we have every intention of doing so, as he has been one of the stars of the season so far. We are very happy with what he is doing and what he continues to do, race after race.”

Other rider Andrea Iannone, on the other hand, has made his intentions clear of wanting to ride a factory-specification Ducati Team bike next season, having already tested for the red outfit at Mugello.

“That all depends on whether Cal Crutchlow renews with Ducati Team,” Campinoti continues. “If so, the situation will remain as it is. Otherwise, Andrea would automatically enter Ducati Team, which would take up that option.”

Furthermore, Campinoti also confirms his intentions of wishing to continue the Pramac MotoGP™ adventure with Ducati, as opposed to another manufacturer, as he adds, “We still haven’t confirmed anything for sure, but I sincerely hope we continue with them.”

Finally, the Italian went on to openly express his interest in the 2011 Moto2™ World Champion, should it turn out to be the case that Iannone does move team for next season.

“It all depends on how things evolve, but it could be the case that several good riders are on the market,” Campinoti begins to sum up. “One of them could be Stefan Bradl…he is yet to renew his contract (with LCR Honda MotoGP).”

Aprilia, Biaggi conclude three-day Mugello test

Italian manufacturer Aprilia have wrapped up a three-day Mugello visit, in which Max Biaggi extensively tested the ART-Aprilia MotoGP bike
Biaggi completed a marathon haul of 176 laps over the 72 hour workout, recording a best time of 1’50.940.

For Aprilia however the lap time is not crucial at this stage, as they are more focused on gathering key data for the continued development of their current bike - already being used in the MotoGP™ World Championship - and in preparation for a new Aprilia prototype they hope will race in the premier class in 2016.

The importance of the tests was clear to Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing manager, who commented: "Max’s pace was very good and we have gathered valuable data. There is little more to add than what has been said already this week. We decided to try Biaggi because we knew we would get important information from his experience, so from this point of view, the test went as planned."

Biaggi was happy with the feeling with the ART, saying, "The balance of these three days is definitely positive. From all points of view, adaptation to the bike, the tyres, brakes, not to mention the physical effort with so many laps, it becomes important especially if you have not been on the bike for a long time."

"We did a good job, we were able to evaluate the different solutions available and I think I've provided some good ideas to the team."

Can Marquez make it 9 out of 9 in Germany?
If Marc Marquez keeps winning, he will wrap up this year’s MotoGP™ world title at MotorLand Aragon – regardless of what his rivals do. In order to do that, the Spaniard would need to claim a fifth straight victory at Germany’s Sachsenring this weekend.
21-year-old Marquez is no stranger to the Sachsenring. In fact, he’s won there on his last four attempts: in the 125 class in 2010, in the Moto2™ class in both 2011 and 2012 and in his first MotoGP™ German Grand Prix last year. On each of those occasions he was coming from pole position. With this in mind, it is fair to say the odds are in his favour for another good weekend, having proven unbeatable across the first eight Grands Prix of 2014. If he pulls it off, he will have won every single event across the opening half of the premier class season, and in varying circumstances.

Marquez has already become the 13th most successful rider of all-time (across all World Championship classes to have ever existed) in terms of GP wins, having celebrated his 40th victory in mixed conditions at Assen two weekends ago. He now targets a 25th MotoGP™ podium, having already equalled the totals of great names John Surtees, Luca Cadalora, Jack Findlay and Carlos Checa. On top of this, the Cervera-born Catalan has become the first rider to claim eight straight wins since the MotoGP™ category was introduced at the start of 2002…and he is in good company, with only six other riders in history having won eight or more Grands Prix in a single season: the surnames are Hailwood, Agostini, Doohan, Rossi, Stoner and Lorenzo…

In what has fast become the ‘best of the rest’ battle for second overall, things could not be closer. Valentino Rossi heads to Germany with a fresh two-year deal signed and sealed, binding him to Movistar Yamaha MotoGP until the end of 2016. He now shares second in the standings with Marquez’s Repsol Honda Team partner Dani Pedrosa, although the gap to the leader is a mammoth 72 points. However, should Rossi finish on the podium, he will become the first rider ever to rack up 4,000 career points. Bearing in mind this will be the 76th GP staged in Germany – a nation that boasts more Grand Prix history than most – this may seem only fitting.

In fourth place, Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso is well over a century of points in arrears of Marquez, but upbeat again following the red team’s best result since Misano 2012 - he finished second last time out. Fifth overall is Jorge Lorenzo, having admitted post-race in The Netherlands that he had been distracted by conditions which reminded him of the weather in which he broke his collarbone a year earlier.

With the help of colleagues in Moto2™ and Moto3™, the likes of Marquez, Pedrosa or Lorenzo could make more history this weekend. Should all three races at the Sachsenring be won by Spanish riders, the nation would become only the second (after Italy) to win a total of 500 World Championship Grands Prix, with 90-times race winner Angel Nieto having contributed to the majority of them thanks to his immense success in the 125cc, 80cc and 50cc categories. It could prove to be a rather special weekend, should the ‘Marcha Real’ play out three times on the podium.

Hard Plus Dunlop tyres make a return for Sachsenring
Whilst Assen brought added interest in the form of changeable weather with the Dunlop wet proving itself in the rain, in intermediate and in drying conditions, round nine of the Moto2™ and Moto3™ World Championship provides another challenge.
At Sachsenring the configuration of corners leads to very low heat generation on the right hand side of the tyres. Around two-thirds of the track is predominantly left handed corners before switching to the right and it is important to make sure that there is enough heat generated before the ‘right hand’ section. The emphasis on the left hand side of the tyre also brings high temperatures – the highest in the season after Phillip Island.

A more ‘standard’ track such as Jerez sees temperatures in the order of 105°C but it is usual to see readings from the left hand side of tyres topping 140°C at Sachsenring.

Moto2 has three new Dunlop tyres at Sachsenring since the same race last year. The rear options are the same as at Catalunya with the ‘Hard+’ 067 and 067a compounds nominated as the best options for the track’s testing characteristics. For the front the regular pairing of 102 hard and 302 medium will provide the choice for the riders.

The riders will have three sets of wet tyres with an additional set being permitted if all sessions are declared wet.

Clinton Howe, Dunlop’s Operations Manager for Motorcycle Grand Prix, explains “We expect the Moto2 riders to be opting for the harder options although there was a 50/50 split for both front and rear at the track last year so we will have to wait and see what happens in practice before we get a feel for preferences. We broke the race lap record last year and I can see that time being reduced again given the performances we have seen this season.”

Unfortunately if Bradl won't stay at LCR he is going to have to end up on the Ducati...or maybe Suzuki? But LCR are already working on having two riders so I would very much doubt them (or HRC) booting Bradl, not to mention the promotional value they would be losing in Germany.

Honda Racing Corporation sign Pedrosa until end of 2016
So that't that, NO JL99 dream team to Repsol Honda, at least not anytime soon. I've said it before, as much flack as Dani takes, he is a SOLID teammate to MM93, really Repsol couldnt find a better teammate to compliment Marc imo.

Honda Racing Corporation is pleased to officially announce an agreement has been reached with Dani Pedrosa that will see the Spanish rider remain in the factory Honda team for a further two years, until the end of 2016.
Pedrosa, who currently lies third in the World Championship – level on points with second placed Valentino Rossi – as the season reaches the halfway point, will extend his contract with Honda with whom he has raced in the World Championship since 2001.

Pedrosa is a three time World Champion (2003 in 125cc, 2004 and 2005 in 250cc) and made his debut in MotoGP™ in 2006 in the Repsol Honda Team, claiming the Rookie of the Year title and fifth position in the Championship. He has been both runner up and third in the premier class on six occasions (three each).

Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC Executive Vice President, commented, “We are very pleased to renew our contract with Dani. He is enjoying a very strong season and is currently tied with Rossi in the Championship, we are very happy with his performance. The partnership of Dani and Marc (Marquez) has proven to be successful and we look forward to another two years of success.”

Pedrosa added, “I'm very happy to be able to announce my renewal with the Repsol Honda Team, and grateful to Honda for the trust they have shown in me for a further two years. It’s the best way for me to continue in my racing career, together with the company I was with in my very first race. I am very excited to give my 100% and continue to work together with everyone at Honda Racing Corporation.”

Redding needs a real ride. We won't know what he can do until he gets it. They should have signed Pedro to a 1 yr, with Redding on a works Satellite bike for that year. The works bike should be as close to what MM and Pedro have, and they should give him the shot. If he performs, drop Pedro to the Satellite or boot him and bring Redding in.

I'd be willing to bet Redding gets Bautista's RC213V. The factory production bike is supposed to get pneumatic valves next year anyway, so that should make it a more competitive bike.

Lorenzo ‘optimistic as usual’ going into round nine
Heading into the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland weekend Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo says he feels optimistic and looking forward to racing.
Lorenzo missed the Grand Prix of Germany race last year due to emergency surgery after a fall during FP2. This year the Spaniard hopes to change his fortunes and show the German public his Spartan spirit.

Prior to 2013’s missed race Lorenzo had four consecutive second place finishes at Sachsenring to his name - but he is yet to grace the top step of the podium there.

He commented, “After a disappointing race at Assen where we expected much more I’m right now focused on the next race. Sachsenring is not one of my favorite circuits, especially after last year when I crashed again and I had a problem with the plate fixing my collarbone. After that crash I had to suffer another surgery and that issue changed it all.”

“Despite this season where I don’t feel so lucky for so many different things, I’m looking forward to racing there and trying to revert the situation. The bike is working well and I can feel the support of all the team. I’m pretty optimistic as usual and I will never give up!”

Premier class stars charged up for Sachsenring contest
Talking to the media at the Sachsenring on this occasion were World Champion and standings leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), the two riders currently tied for second place Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), along with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team)

Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing), Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and home rider Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP).

Marquez has an excellent record at the demanding German track and he looked ahead to the weekend’s racing, saying, "Last year was a strange race without Dani (Pedrosa) and Jorge (Lorenzo) on track but this year it will be very interesting. The first part of the circuit is really exciting, as it is so small and tight like a karting track. We will try to manage it well and if it rains we’ll try to have a good pace too."

Having recently agreed a new two-year contract with the factory Yamaha team for 2015 and 2016, Rossi was in a typically upbeat mood, commenting, "I’m very, very happy to sign another two-year contract as it was my target and with Yamaha we have agreed to continue together. I want to make more good races, more podiums, try to get victories and try to improve the M1 in the coming years."

Rossi’s rival for second place in the championship at present, Pedrosa, has also this week secured his future with his team for two more years and he anticipated another exciting weekend in Germany.

He enthused, "I have agreed to ride with Honda for two more years so it is good news and it is a special way for me to keep racing. I have been with the team since 2006 so it is great for me. I enjoy it here at Sachsenring and I think we will see some good racing here as many riders have similar lap times."

Ducati man Dovizioso goes into the weekend on a high after finishing in second place last time out at the Dutch TT, though he admits his racing plans beyond 2014 are not yet finalised. He said, "After an unbelievable result in Assen and fighting with Marc (Marquez) in the race it is a great feeling. The way we have managed the first half of the season and to be fourth in the World Championship, we didn’t expect it. I have to consider my options like everybody and make a decision about what to do next year."

The elder of the two Espargaro brothers has impressed this year on his ‘Open’ Forward-Yamaha machine and he explained, "It is going be a good track for us I think. Last year with the CRT I was in P5 on grid and fighting with Dovizioso in the race so I expect it to be good fun again. We are really happy with where we are and the team are working very hard. We are sixth in the championship, close to fourth and fifth and ahead of many Factory bikes."

Home rider Bradl aims to impress at his most important Grand Prix of the year. "It is always very nice to come to the Sachsenring as it is a special place for me. The fans here are so close to the track and you can feel their emotion, feel them waiting for us. Assen was a disaster for us, so we hope we can fix it here at my home GP," he added.

Briton Smith is looking for a strong result for the Tech 3 team in the ninth race of the season and he stated, "This is a really important time of the year before the summer break. It is important to get a good result, as I am fast in tests and practice so it is time to turn it into a positive performance on race day on a Sunday."

All Honda front row with.....wait for it.... MM on pole. Pedro crashed in his second run, but he was far enough ahead for 2nd and Bradl finished 3rd. EsA, Jlo, Rossi on second row.

Marquez 'I kept my nerve'

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez left his rivals in no doubt that he is the man to beat on Sunday with a record-breaking pace in Sachsenring qualifying.

Marquez's hopes of extending his perfect 2014 win streak were looking vulnerable as he struggled to stand up after a nasty, head-down highside in opening practice.

However the Repsol Honda star is now perfectly placed to challenge for nine victories in a row prior to the mid-season summer break.

“The weekend has been affected by the crash I suffered yesterday, but I kept my nerve and little by little we've been getting better,” said Marquez. “I felt good yesterday afternoon and I was much better this morning. In the few laps I did in FP4, I could see that we had a good pace and a chance to fight for pole position.”

Marquez had been fourth on the timesheets at the end of his initial qualifying run, then moved to the top moments after pace setting team-mate Dani Pedrosa lost control of his RCV at turn one. Marquez then improved to become the first rider to lap below 1m 21s at the tight and twisty circuit, the shortest on the MotoGP calendar, beating Casey Stoner's 2008 lap record for Ducati.

“With the first tyre I didn't feel entirely comfortable, but with the second one I had a good feeling and could see that there was good grip - so I decided to push a little more and put in a strong lap. Starting from the front is important for the race tomorrow, because this is a circuit where it is difficult to overtake. We will try and keep up the pace from practice, which I think has been good.”

The 21-year-old Spaniard took pole for the opening seven events of this year, then lost out in qualifying for Catalunya and Assen.

Marquez already holds a 72-point lead over Yamaha's Valentino Rossi and Pedrosa.

Bump under braking’ ends Pedrosa pole hopes

A late qualifying fall left Dani Pedrosa helpless to prevent team-mate Marc Marquez claiming pole position in Germany.

Pedrosa on pole when he lost the front of his Repsol Honda into turn one, with just three minutes to go.

It was his second big fall of the weekend, after a Turn 12 lowside on Friday afternoon, but he was again able to walk away unharmed - unlike in last year's collarbone breaking Turn One accident.

Despite being absent for the end of qualifying, only unbeaten world champion Marquez was able to better Pedrosa's time and he will thus start from the middle of the front row.

“It was a good qualifying session and we had a good pace, despite the crash which was my fault when I think I hit a bump under braking but luckily I'm fine,” said Pedrosa. “I'm very grateful to my mechanics for the work they did yesterday to get the bike back running again after my crash in FP2.

“Tomorrow we will try to do our best, position ourselves well from the start, make a good tyre choice and hope the weather is kind to us! Our setup is definitely good, so I hope to have a good race.”

Pedrosa is currently tied with Valentino Rossi for second in the world championship, 72-points from Marquez. Rossi qualified in sixth for Yamaha.

Home star Stefan Bradl will complete the front row of the grid for LCR Honda.

Rossi 'There was something wrong'

Valentino Rossi will start Sunday's German MotoGP from sixth on the grid after declaring there was 'something wrong' with his second new tyre in qualifying.

“Fortunately I did quite a good lap with the first tyre,” said Rossi, who inked a new two-year Yamaha contract earlier this week.

“Usually you can go faster with the second tyre by two or three tenths, but there was something wrong with the second tyre. It didn't have any grip and it was also very difficult to get the bike back to the pit box. There was something wrong, so unfortunately I couldn't push.

“Anyway I'm on the second row and the second row is the limit for a good race. Today we worked well on the bike, we're not so bad, but for tomorrow it will be hard. The three Hondas are very fast so we have to improve.”

Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who will start from fifth position, described a similar tyre problem in qualifying.

Yamaha team manager Massimo Meregalli confirmed: “Unfortunately we weren't able to improve on the lap time in qualifying with the second tyre as for some reason the grip provided by it was not at the same level as the first, making it almost impossible for the riders to improve.”

Rossi heads into Sunday's race joint second with Dani Pedrosa in the world championship standings. Pedrosa qualified in second place, between Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez and LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl.

Second row Sachsenring slots for factory Yamaha duo

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi will start Sunday’s eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland from fifth and sixth respectively on the grid.
Both riders had a good start to the sunny 15-minute qualifying session, Lorenzo initially taking second and Rossi taking fifth place with their first flying laps. The Yamaha riders had multiple runs to determine their starting position, improving their times by more than 0.3s from the morning’s free practice.

Both then unfortunately suffered from a lack of grip with their second qualifying tyres, restricting their ability to make a further attack towards the end of Q2.

Lorenzo had a late start to the qualification session in order to get a flying lap in without any traffic. With 11 minutes to go the Spaniard showed his consistency as he rode a sequence of laps into the 1.21’s and clocked a 1’21.526. With six minutes left of the session he came in for a fresh set of tyres to have another go at putting his name at the top of the leading board. Two minutes later he was back on track and able to improve on his time by 0.350s, delivering a session best of 1’21.508 to finish in fifth place.



“Fifth is definitely not what we expected from today's qualifying session, especially because we have a good pace and we’ve always been in the top three during the weekend. In the qualifying we couldn’t take profit from the new tyres and the second tyre didn't have the same traction, I don't know why, it was spinning a lot and felt like a different tyre. It’s going to be a very long race, the first lap will be important because it's difficult to overtake here but we will try to get another podium. We are not so bad in pace so let's see if we can stay with the front guys,” stated Lorenzo.

Teammate Rossi had the opposite approach to the qualifying session. The Italian was one of the first riders to get out on track, but soon returned to the pits after two laps. With 11 minutes remaining he was back on his way and immediately shot up to fifth in the standings with a hot lap of 1’26.651. With five minutes remaining Rossi had another return to the pit box, before quickly heading out for another run. The nine time World Champion was unable to improve his time and will start sixth.

Rossi commented, “Fortunately I did quite a good lap with the first tyre. Usually you can go faster with the second tyre by two or three tenths, but there was something wrong with the second one. Aleix Espargaro heads second row in Germany

NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro claimed fourth on the grid at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.

Sachsenring is a track which Espargaro enjoys, giving him good results aboard the Aprilia CRT machine last year. Much of the weekend has been spent testing the Forward chassis as opposed to the Yamaha one he has been running so far in 2014.

The soft tyre had given Espargaro an edge in the previous sessions allowing him to lead on the first day. Again these tyres provided a boost in Q2, helping to close the gap in engine performance between the Open and Factory bikes.

A lap of 1’21.376s put him ahead of both Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) on their factory Yamaha machines.

Espargaro commented, “We are doing a great weekend here, we’re close to the top even on used tyres. We missed the front row by just a tiny margin. We need to work and focus on which tyre we’re going to use over the race. The team and I must talk about it tonight.”

“It is good to keep this level, I am getting more and more confidence and am able to fight with the top guys. We hope to continue this for as long as we can,” he added.

Home front row for German star Bradl

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) secured third in Q2 at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland and he is looking forward to his home race.
Bradl brought the home fans to their feet as he helped to secure a complete Honda lock out of the front row. The German has looked strong all weekend and has had previous success in the 125cc and Moto2™ classes at his home track, with podiums in each.

Bradl briefly led qualifying, but was knocked down the order by the factory pair of Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team). Bradl’s best time of 1’21.340s was just 0.403s slower than Marquez’s record breaking pole lap.

Bradl qualified third in Austin and fourth at Le Mans and Catalunya and he will be looking to convert this front row into a home podium.

“The result was very nice. I could see the crowd was behind me. The front row here is very important. The track is very tight so it is hard to overtake. The front tyre is going to be critical tomorrow. We have a good pace but a lot depends on the weather,” commented Bradl.

He added, “In fact the weather looks difficult for tomorrow, but I hope to make another step.”

Repsol Honda qualifying 1-2 in Sachsenring

Marc Marquez returned to pole position at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland with teammate Dani Pedrosa in second.
Both Repsol Honda Team riders suffered heavy crashes on the opening day of practice but were able to recover and top the timesheets come Q2, despite another fall for Pedrosa.

FP4 activity was reduced as rain forced many of the riders to stay in the pits for long periods, but this had no negative impact on either Honda riders as both were immediately quick in Q2.

A lap of 1’20.937s saw Marquez secure pole position. This lap also broke Casey Stoner’s six year old pole position record, set on qualifying tyres. Marquez is looking for his fifth consecutive Sachsenring win on Sunday.

Teammate Pedrosa was also pushing for pole position for much of the session. The experienced Spaniard set a 1’21.233s several minutes from the end. Pedrosa then suffered a front end crash at Turn 1, ending his hopes of pole. He was unhurt in the crash, but able to pinpoint the cause.

Marquez commented, “We started with a big crash on Friday but step-by-step we regained the confidence. Already yesterday afternoon the rhythm was quite good. In FP4 I felt very good, we improved the set up and I found some more grip. I pushed and I was able to get a good lap, beating the circuit record. Tomorrow is the most important, a big race before the holidays.”

Pedrosa added, “I had a good pace during qualifying, unfortunately I crashed. Maybe I made a mistake or I hit a bump. It’s still good. The front row and start are very important here as it is very tight. The weather is good but hopefully it doesn’t get too hot as the grip drops a little. Luckily I am okay after the two crashes, thank you to the mechanics for fixing the bike.”

German MotoGP: 0.034s cover Marquez, Lorenzo, Bradl in warm-up

Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo and Stefan Bradl completed warm-up for this afternoon's German MotoGP covered by just 0.034s.

Pole sitter Marquez, gunning for a perfect ninth win of the season this afternoon, took the top spot from Lorenzo for the second and final time after eleven of the 20-minutes.

The reigning champion's best lap was a 1m 22.057s, over one-second from his record pole time on the Repsol Honda and just 0.010s quicker than second row starter Lorenzo.

Home star Bradl completed the ultra-close top three for LCR Honda, underlining his podium potential from the front row of the grid.

In terms of consistency, Lorenzo set the most sub-1m 22.5s laps with nine this morning, followed by seven for Marquez and three for Bradl.

Lorenzo's Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi also set three sub-1m 22.5s laps on his way to fourth (+0.288s). Lorenzo and Rossi will line-up fifth and sixth on the grid after tyre problems in qualifying.

With the Sachsenring weather still uncertain, the top riders all practised bike swaps in warm-up.

Lorenzo did a Marc Marquez-style leap from one bike straight to another for the first time, prompting smiles from Marquez and his team when watching a replay on TV afterwards, but the Repsol Honda bike swaps had not gone as smoothly.

Dani Pedrosa was furious when his swap was ruined by a cameraman blocking his way, while Marquez was momentarily held up by one of his own team as he reached the pit box.

Marquez had snaked the rear tyre into pit lane as he hit the brakes at the last moment before the speed limit, indicating that while others now starting to copy his bike swap technique the Spaniard himself is working on gaining time on the way in and out of the pits.

Pedrosa, who will line-up between Marquez and Bradl on the front row, was fifth fastest in warm-up (+0.289s) with only one lap below 1m 22.5s.

Miller takes victory in exciting Sachsenring contest

Jack Miller won the Moto 3 race at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland on Sunday, beating Brad Binder and Alexis Masbou to the line at the 3.67km Sachsenring circuit.

An incident packed start to the race saw Alex Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0) go down early on lap one, with Romano Fenati (SKY Racing Team VR46) also crashing shortly afterwards.

At the front a group of five riders kept out of trouble with Miller (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Binder (Ambrogio Racing) and Masbou (Ongetta-Rivacold) joined in the podium chase by Alex Marquez (Estrella Galicia 0,0) and Danny Kent (Red Bull Husqvarna Ajo).

Miller eventually crossed the finish line 0.180s ahead of Binder, as Miller extended his championship lead to 19 points and Binder earned a first ever podium. Lightweight class veteran Masbou was third for just the second podium of his decade long career.

A mistake by Marquez late in the race meant he could only eventually finish fourth, whilst a much improved showing from Kent took him to fifth.

In their team’s home race SaxoPrint-RTG’s Efren Vazquez and John McPhee were sixth and seventh, with Isaac Viñales (Calvo Team), Matteo Ferrari (San Carlo Team Italia) and Juanfran Guevara (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3) completing the top ten.

Substitute Gabriel Rodrigo (Avant Tecno Husqvarna Ajo) crashed on the first lap and was able to remount, with Livio Loi (Marc VDS Racing Team) doing brilliantly to stay upright as Rodrigo touched his bike – only for Loi to later retire due to a mechanical fault.

As the race progressed Dutch pair Scott Deroue (RW Racing GP) and Bryan Schouten (CIP) went down together, with Schouten reacting angrily. Andrea Locatelli (San Carlo Team Italia), Gabriel Ramos (Kiefer Racing) and Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Ongetta-AirAsia) also crashed mid-race.

Enea Bastianini (Junior Team Go&FUN Moto3) went down early but was able to remount and score a point in 15th.

Towards the end of the race Miguel Oliveira (Mahindra Racing) and Karel Hanika (Red Bull KTM Ajo) both went down together as Hanika lost the front, with Niccolo Antonelli (Junior Team GO&FUN) also crashing in the final stages.

Aegerter secures first career win in Germany

The Moto 2 race at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland was won by Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Technomag carXpert), who got the better of Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing Team) on the final lap, with the podium completed by Simone Corsi (NGM Forward Racing).

An excellent performance gave Aegerter the victory, having started on pole in the 129th Grand Prix of his career. He crossed the line just 0.091s in front of Kallio, with Corsi taking third place by 0.152s from Esteve Rabat (Marc VDS Racing Team).

The race result sees Kallio close to within 19 points of Rabat at the head of the standings.

Maverick Viñales (Pons HP 40) was in the podium hunt, but eventually crossed the line just behind Corsi and Rabat in fifth.

The top ten was completed by Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing Team), Randy Krummenacher (IodaRacing Project), Mattia Pasini (NGM Forward Racing), Thomas Luthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) and Xavier Simeon (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2).

Azlan Shah (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) crashed early on, with Jordi Torres (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2) highsiding out of the race at Turn 8 on lap 6 when battling for fifth. Shortly afterwards Lorenzo Baldassarri (Gresini Moto2) crashed from the race when running in eighth position, on lap 8.

There was disappointment for Jonas Folger (AGR Team) at his home round as he pulled into the pits with a mechanical fault on lap 10, though he was placed only 19th at the time of his retirement. Another German rider, Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP) also retired late on.

Josh Herrin (AirAsia Caterham Moto Racing) pulled into the pit lane midrace with a problem, shortly before his teammate Johann Zarco crashed out, leaving his bike in flames at trackside. Alex De Angelis (Tasca Racing Moto2) tumbled out in the final stages, with stewards reacting quickly to remove his bike from the track.
