Moto GP 2014 Round 16 Australia***SPOILER***

Congrats again to MM93 now 2 time Moto GP World Champion i think we've only seen the beggining of what he can do. Now the battle for 2nd is FULL on!! Well the good news is if Marc gets Black Flagged again it wont matter lol

Introduction: Phillip Island, the self-styled home of Australian motorsport, is steeped in motor racing tradition, with the first car races having been held there on public roads in the 1920s. The first motorcycle races took place in 1931 and a permanent track was built in 1956. The circuit fell into disrepair during the late 70s and early 80s until it was bought in 1985 and given a AUS $5m facelift. MotoGP returned in 1989 and 1990 before becoming a regular fixture once more from 1997 onwards.


The Phillip Island circuit is blessed with breathtaking scenery and beautiful ocean views and, as one of the fastest, most fluid, tracks on the calendar, it continues to provide some of the most spectacular racing in the MotoGP season.

Fierce battle for second rages on behind phenomenal champion Marquez
The picturesque Island circuit is a favourite for riders and fans alike and another exciting race can be expected on Sunday at the Tissot Australian Grand Prix, as MotoGP™ checks in straight from Motegi.

With the pressure off - Marquez secured the title on home territory for Honda with a calculated ride to second place in Japan – the newly crowned double MotoGP World Champion can ride freely as he goes in search of a 12th victory of a remarkable second season in the premier class. Last year on the Island Marquez was disqualified for failing to respect the timing of a mandatory bike swap so he would love to make amends this time out.

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s nine time World Champion Rossi and Marquez’s Honda teammate Pedrosa are joint second in the standings ahead of round 16 and both are determined to cement the runner-up position in the championship over the final three rounds.

Rossi demonstrated his fitness and pace again by finishing on the podium at Motegi after his big crash at Aragon, whilst Pedrosa crossed the line just 0.555s behind the Italian. Both have tasted victory at Phillip Island in their careers though in Pedrosa’s case not in the premier class.

One rider in great form heading to Australia is Rossi’s Yamaha colleague Lorenzo who has won back-to-back races at the last two rounds. He has been in great shape in the second half of 2014 so far and has notched up seven consecutive podiums – moving him to within three points of Pedrosa and Rossi in the standings.

Last year at Phillip Island Lorenzo took victory by seven seconds in a race which involved the riders changing bikes midway through due to tyre durability concerns and the Spaniard is also a former 250cc race winner at the venue.

Behind Lorenzo in the standings Andrea Dovizioso is having a good season in fifth place overall, the same position in which he finished Sunday’s race in Japan. Saturday saw Dovizioso take his and Ducati’s first pole position since 2010 and the experienced Italian continues to improve his team’s competitiveness on the evolving GP14.2.

Brothers Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) are locked in an intriguing battle for sixth place in the standings, with elder sibling Aleix one point ahead of Pol at present.

Also pushing for prominence in the top ten are the likes of Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) who will all be giving it full gas at Phillip Island from Friday to Sunday.

After a disastrous start to the season, and what some think is a lucky or undeserved win at Aragon, it looks to me like JL99 has the best form of the 3 fighting for 2nd, and it wouldn't surprise me if he podiums at all of the last few rounds and wins a couple.

That's for sure. He's the biggest threat to Marquez next year imo

Agree, only 3 spots on the podium, no way MM93 will sit back.. I personally would like to see Vale finish the season second overall, but it will be tough for sure esp with JL99 coming on strong and never count out Dani

Pedrosa and Miller #RideMelbourne en route to Phillip Island
With the Repsol Honda Team MotoGP machine and Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 bike having taken in the famous sights of Melbourne on their way from Avalon Airport, it was down to Pedrosa and Miller to seize the moment as the two riders enjoyed the spectacular city skyline and riverside scenery in a truly unique start to the weekend.

As the bikes passed by, the duo’s exploits were watched on closely by Australian Moto2 colleague Anthony West as well as Moto3 wildcards Remy Gardner (son of Wayne, 500cc World Champion of 1987) and Olly Simpson plus Aiden Wagner, who is all-set for his Moto2 debut fresh from training with Tito Rabat in Spain.

“It was great to have the chance to be here in Melbourne and ride alongside the Yarra River,” Pedrosa commented. “The hardest part was getting the bike to actually stand up straight, as we obviously couldn’t ride at the kind of speed you see at Phillip Island! Riding in the city was a special way to arrive in Australia.”

“This was some great extra testing – I just had to be careful not to crash into the river!” Miller joked before looking with more earnestness to a vitally important weekend. “It was awesome to see crowds of home fans getting up close to the bikes. Now we will head to the race track; after losing crucial points in Japan, there is no longer any option but to go flat-out for the win and the 25 points that come with it.”

Repsol Honda team arrive in Australia on a high
In Japan Marquez was crowned as the youngest ever back-to-back premier class World Champion, and now all eyes are on the battle for second place. With both Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi joint on 230 points and Jorge Lorenzo now just three points behind them on 227, the fight will be intense with just three races of 2014 remaining.

Both Repsol Honda riders have had mixed results at Phillip Island in the past, Pedrosa celebrating a solitary win there in 2005 (250cc) a second place last year (MotoGP™) and a third place finish in 2009 (MotoGP). Marquez also has one win to his name there in 2010 (125cc), and two third place finishes in Moto2™ (2011, 2012) and is eager to put last year behind him, after receiving a black flag during the race.

Newly crowned 2014 MotoGP World Champion Marquez commented, “What we achieved in Japan a few days ago is still sinking in. To win the Championship in my first two years is a real dream and I must thank all my family, my team, Honda and Repsol for all their commitment and dedication. Now we can relax a little, but not too much.”

“I still want to win races and finish the season on a high. Phillip Island was a bit of a nightmare for me last year so I have a score to settle! I like the track, it’s a lot of fun, so let’s hope the weather is nice so we can really enjoy the weekend.”

Pedrosa added, “The race in Japan was a little frustrating so I’m looking forward to getting to Phillip Island and putting it behind me. Obviously we tested there earlier in the year but we’ll have to see how the conditions are now, some months later. The goal is of course to take second place in the Championship and I will be pushing 100% to achieve this. The layout is exciting to ride and the races are always fun, but let’s hope there are no issues like in 2013.”


Lorenzo and Rossi locked in battle for second
Rossi looks forward to defending his second place in the championship from his teammate Lorenzo and Repsol Honda rival Dani Pedrosa.

The Doctor’s experience will certainly come in handy during this weekend’s battle. Rossi is one of the most successful riders at the Phillip Island circuit.

Starting in 2001 he had an impressive five year winning streak, followed by four more consecutive podium finishes. In the premier class the nine-time World Champion has won at the Australian track from 2001 until 2005, claimed second place in 2008 and 2009 and scored five third places in 2000, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2013.

This weekend Rossi is scheduled to become the first rider to reach the milestone of 250 starts in the premier class of Grand Prix racing. Rossi tops the list of riders with most GP starts in the premier class which also includes Alex Barros (245 premier class races), Loris Capirossi (217), Colin Edwards (196) and Nicky Hayden (195).

After a strong victory at Motegi, teammate Lorenzo is also prepared to take on the competition. Phillip Island is the Spaniard’s favourite circuit. He scored two second places in the premier class in 2010 and 2012 before claiming victory last year in unusual circumstances. Following safety concerns the race was reduced to 19 laps and included a mandatory bike change at the ten-lap mark.

Lorenzo holds the record for the fastest lap at the Phillip Island circuit since last year, when he clocked a 1'27.899 around the 4.448km track.

Rossi commented, "We have a second place contest between me, Jorge and Pedrosa and I’m worried because Jorge is so fast. We have to give the maximum. I love Phillip Island and Sepang but three races in a row is always very difficult and a good start is very important. The podium of Japan was another positive result, especially because I have done well throughout the race and was very close to Marquez and Jorge."

"We held a very high pace and my bike was working very well. I really like the Australian GP and I want to ride a good race here, partly because most of my team is Australian. I want to get back on the podium and try to win again. We are working well, I like the circuit, and the Yamaha is going strong, so I think we can do it. I’m in a good shape, so it will be a fun battle."

Lorenzo, meanwhile, stated, "It was a great feeling to win in Motegi once again. Winning two races in a row after a very disappointing start of the season was unbelievable, not only for me but also for all the guys from Yamaha who worked really hard. Now I look forward to racing in Phillip Island, another amazing place to ride. Australia is always special and the layout is always perfect for having fun."

"To me the joy of riding there with the M1 is difficult to explain but I love the long and fast corners, especially the last one before going towards the straight to the finish. Hopefully we can have another great weekend and fight for the victory once again, which is so important regarding the second place in the championship."

MotoGP™ stars delighted to arrive for Phillip Island battle
Having wrapped up the 2014 title on Sunday in Japan newly crowned double MotoGP™ World Champion Marquez (Repsol Honda) commented, "I feel really good, less pressure, more free. The championship is done, but you are more tired after all the commitments and everything. Of course you can enjoy it a lot after winning a championship and the confidence is high."

He added, "On Sunday night we celebrated with the team, a dinner with the Japanese staff and then just with the team. Phillip Island is a special place and it is one of the best circuits we come to. It is really nice to ride here."

Race winner at the last two rounds Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Lorenzo enthused about the venue for round 16, stating, "For me it is always a pleasure to come here. Not only Phillip Island but to be in this wonderful country. I love the cities Melbourne and Sydney and the area around Phillip Island is fantastic. It is my favourite place we come to."

On his recent form he noted, "We just needed to put the pieces of the puzzle together. We are competitive now and strong. It is not going to be easy to keep winning races, because there are four riders in very good shape. But our level is high."

Ducati Team’s Dovizioso, who arrives in Australia after getting his first pole position with the Italian team last Saturday at Motegi, explained, "We are so happy, especially for the pole position, that is something special. The weekend in Motegi was good we were fast in every practice. We are getting closer and closer. In the race in the early laps we were with the front group."

He expanded, "We have to focus on the positive things. Last year we were far behind and now we are close to the podium. I am excited for the project next year. We tested here at Phillip Island last winter and our lap time was close to the fastest rider."

Briton Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) said of his ninth place finish in Japan, "I believe what we did in Motegi was respectable, third position in terms of the satellite bikes. I was pleased with the outcome of the weekend."

Of his second season in MotoGP so far he also commented, "Our championship position doesn't look outstanding. But sometimes the table doesn't tell the whole story. Our performance level has been better than last year. Some of these guys alongside me here are taking the championship to a higher level and we have to keep up with that. I am comfortable with the M1 but there are still some techniques which I continue to learn."

Marquez relaxed after title win but still with work to do
The youngest ever double MotoGP™ World Champion commented, “The Championship is done but not finished, we can enjoy it but we still need to focus a lot. All riders are competitive but we still want to try to win races. The motivation is here, there are riders fighting for second so the best option for us is to win and stay out of the way. Nobody wants to finish fourth, it will be a nice battle for them.”

On overcoming the tension at Motegi and securing the title on home territory for HRC, Marquez commented, “All year I’ve felt pressure, especially in the first part and it just kept growing, everyone was waiting for my mistake. After two mistakes I knew it wasn’t the end of the world if we had a mistake, but I didn’t want a third. I know it was very important for Honda to win at home.”

Marquez also revealed that the planning for 2015 is well ahead of schedule, as is often the case for Honda, and that he will be trying new parts in the final phase of the season. He stated, “For Honda we can use these last races to try some little things for next year. These last races are very important for Honda and we have a chance to try special things without so much pressure. We can look ahead to next year a little bit. I don’t think we’ll run next year’s bike at Valencia, we’re just trying one thing for the next races. It’s really expensive for HRC to adapt the engine to the new chassis and then to go back. I will try some smaller options if HRC give them to us, otherwise it’s the current bike.”

Aleix Espargaro leads sunny opening Phillip Island run
Using a softer option tyre Espargaro set a best time of 1’29.749 to lead the way by 0.16s from compatriot Lorenzo, with Iannone 0.276s off P1. The session was run in cool, clear and sunny conditions at the picturesque Phillip Island track.

With Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) fourth and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) it was a good first session for the Yamaha riders, with Marquez the only Honda representative in the top eight.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) tried Bridgestone’s new asymmetric front tyre and finished the session in sixth place, just ahead of colleague Cal Crutchlow.

Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) and Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) rounded out the top ten.

Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Gresini Honda) suffered a crash at Turn 10 on his 200th Grand Prix appearance. Home rider Broc Parkes (Paul Bird Motorsport) had a fast crash at Turn 1. Both riders were unhurt.

Lorenzo on top on Friday in Australia despite crash in incident packed session
Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Lorenzo is the form rider in the premier class at present and he ended the day on top by 0.147s from his compatriot Espargaro despite a crash after losing the front end late in FP2.

The morning’s fastest Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) ended the day second overall courtesy of his FP1 best.

The pressure is off Marquez this weekend after he secured the 2014 title on Sunday at Motegi but the Repsol Honda star was the rider to get closest to Lorenzo in FP2, though he was behind Espargaro on combined times in third overall.

Iannone (Pramac Racing) was 0.2s down on Lorenzo in fourth, but he too suffered a late crash in the afternoon.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) both finished the day inside the top six.

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Yonny Hernandez (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) completed the day’s top ten.

Dovizioso (Ducati Team) fell at Turn 1 early in FP2, he was frustrated but otherwise OK. Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) and Pol Espargaro also both fell in similar incidents, losing the front

Stoner on testing again with Honda and achievements of Marquez
The 2007 and 2011 premier class World Champion was honoured by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation on Friday as a bronze sculpture of him was unveiled alongside busts of Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan. Gardner and Doohan were of course World Champions and Phillip Island winners like Stoner and all three are MotoGP Legends.

Stoner commented, "To be alongside Mick and Wayne and to have this bestowed upon me, is quite impressive and it is something that I don’t feel that I deserve. It is something that is going to be here for a very long time and it has made me feel very proud. After this and being inducted as a MotoGP Legend last year it is something very unique. It is something special and something I thought would never happen."

Asked about the current generation and the 2014 achievements of Marc Marquez – who took over from Stoner in the Repsol Honda team for 2013 and has gone on to become the youngest ever double-MotoGP World Champion, Stoner replied, "It has been an exceptional season for Marc, all the race wins in a row, the poles, it's extremely impressive."

"There’s nothing to say against it, complete domination. He hasn’t really had anyone challenge him. Dani, Jorge and Valentino have all made mistakes that just allowed him to get ahead."

With Marquez delivering the MotoGP title for HRC on home soil last weekend in Japan, making it three premier class world titles for Honda riders in the last four years, including Stoner’s 2011 title triumph, the Australian commented, "Honda’s domination is something that makes me proud. Before we got there it wasn’t the most popular bike and we worked hard with it, it was already a great bike."

"There were one or two things we did to make the bike more comfortable for me but I think it’s a fantastic bike. All the bikes are capable of winning, but in terms of simplicity Honda is the best one to work with."

On his testing role with HRC and a plan to return to helping them develop their MotoGP prototype, Stoner added, "It was nice to test with Honda. I felt bad almost leaving when I did. Two of our tests last year got rained out so that was not good. We’re going to do another test to make up for that and hopefully I can give some good information, I haven’t been on a bike for exactly a year when we do go to test so it’ll be a little strange."

Three Australian Grand Prix stars honoured at the Island
Former premier class World Champions Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner all won the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island and the achievements of all three riders have been commemorated in bronze sculptures by Melbourne artist Barbara McLean.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation commissioned McLean to create a bust of each of the three Australian motorcycle racing legends and the sculptures were unveiled on Friday at the track with each of the famous trio in attendance.

Gardner, World Champion in 1987, was the first rider to win the Australian Grand Prix when the World Championship first came to Phillip Island in April 1989. Indeed 18 months later the Honda rider repeated the feat when Phillip Island staged the final round of the 1990 season. These two of his 18 Grand Prix victories still burn brightly in Gardner’s personal memory.

Between 1994 and 1998 Doohan and his Honda dominated the 500cc World Championship, taking five successive titles and amassing 54 Grand Prix victories. Doohan won the Australian Grand Prix in 1998, the year after it returned to the Island.

MotoGP World Champion in 2007 and 2011, Stoner amassed 38 victories in the premier class for Ducati and Honda. Six of those came in successive years at Phillip Island from 2007 to 2012. In five of those years he also started from pole position - three times he added fastest race lap.

Gardner, Doohan and Stoner are all already MotoGP Legends with Stoner having been inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.

Tyre strategy key after new material introduced at Phillip Island
Cool temperatures also played a part as a number of riders were caught out on day one of the Tissot Australian Grand Prix, with several riders such as Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso, Pol Espargaro, Alvaro Bautista and Andrea Iannone suffering crashes in which they lost the front end.

***********’s Friday Tech Talk video sees pit lane reporter Dylan Gray speaking to Bridgestone’s Carmine Moscaritolo about the strategies the riders may consider, the specific factors affecting the riders’ choices and the performance of the front and rear tyres available. Meanwhile, Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi give their perspective.

The front tyre options for Phillip Island this weekend are extra soft and soft symmetric front slicks, as well as the new soft compound asymmetric front slick. Lorenzo explained that his crash had been suffered whilst using the new asymmetric front which has been introduced for the first time on Friday.

The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider said, "The asymmetric tyre was probably too hard for the conditions. It was the 32 (compound type) on the left and the centre and 31 on the right. So I couldn’t put the weight of the bike on the 31. I was a little bit on the centre, on the hardest part of the tyre and the bike just closed the front without any warning. You have to learn from it and try to decide on the best tyre for tomorrow, because probably if the temperature was a little bit higher the asymmetric would be a good option."

Rossi had been about to try the asymmetric front when Lorenzo suffered his crash and with his team he ultimately decided to stick with the extra-soft front.

The Italian explained, "At exactly the point we put the front tyre on the bike Jorge crashed. So we decided to wait and see if he had crashed because of tyre problems. We decided to continue with our tyre. So I hope the softer tyre on the front is enough for the race. It depends on the conditions but I feel very good with that tyre. We will see tomorrow if we have to try the asymmetric."

Regarding rear tyre performance on Friday after tyre wear issues last year and a subsequent specific tyre test in March Bridgestone’s Moscaritolo commented, "Overall when we look at the new track surface and how abrasive it is at what is already a very demanding circuit, the new specification rear slicks we’ve brought here do have a little less performance. That’s the trade off when you are looking for a more durable tyre. But actually the level of performance is quite consistent. We could see that some riders, like Valentino Rossi after 20 laps was able to set his quickest times. That’s a very positive outcome for us because even though the overall lap times might be slower the level of performance over race distance is quite consistent and that is important for rider safety."

Phillip Island pole for champion Marquez
After light rain fell before Q2 the riders were not overly affected as the track remained dry with Marquez taking pole position with a 1’28.408 lap, outpacing his nearest rival by 0.234s. By taking his 12th pole of the season, Marquez matched Casey Stoner’s record of most poles in a MotoGP season.

Crutchlow (Ducati Team) showed his pace with the second best lap of the session, giving Ducati another front row result after Andrea Dovizioso’s pole at Motegi. It is Crutchlow’s first front row this year.

Completing the front row, Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) lapped just 0.008s behind Crutchlow for third, making it three different manufacturers on row one.

Heading the second row Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) was on a similar pace, just 0.006s behind Lorenzo. Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) was in fifth, again just fractionally (0.19s) behind the rider in front, having made it through from Q1.

Just before rain began to fall in Q1 Pedrosa set the fastest time in that session and the fastest of the weekend at that point – 1’29.097. That was a significant improvement on his 1’29.976 in FP3.

Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) completed the second row, just in front of third row qualifiers Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3).

The fourth row, meanwhile, features Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar). Japanese rider Aoyama also went through from Q1 with Pedrosa but could only qualify 12th.

Marquez ready to fight for victory at Phillip Island
Marquez secured the 2014 MotoGP™ title last weekend with second place in Japan, but he has now gone three races without a win having taken his last victory at Silverstone in August.

The Repsol Honda rider was disqualified last year in the Phillip Island race - after failing to stop in time for a mandatory bike change – so he would love to put things straight with a 12th win of 2014 on Sunday.

Indeed by taking his 12th pole of the season in Q2 on Saturday, he matched Casey Stoner’s record of most poles in a MotoGP season from 2011 and Mick Doohan’s 12 poles in 500cc in 1997.

Afterwards he said, “It’s really good and I’m really happy to be on pole. After Japan, here looks like a great weekend for me, I feel good. I struggled a bit in the beginning in FP1 but after that we found the way to work with this new rear tyre.”

On his prospects for the race he commented, “Tomorrow it will be a tough race because especially Yamaha are very strong. They have a good pace, but even like that in FP4 I rode well with very consistent times and I think we can fight for victory here.”

First Ducati front row for Crutchlow
Crutchlow was confident for qualifying, having had strong pace all weekend and advancing directly into Q2 from free practice. All the riders were able to complete two runs during the 15-minute session.

Crutchlow’s lap time of 1’28.642s came late in the session and was just 0.234s behind Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) on pole. The good grid result for Crutchlow comes on the back of his teammate Andrea Dovizioso’s pole in Motegi as Ducati’s good qualifying results continue.

Second is not only Crutchlow’s first front row in 2014 and with Ducati, but also his best grid position since he qualified on pole at Brno in 2013.

Crutchlow reflected, “We’ve been going a lot better this weekend. All the riders have been struggled with the tyres. I’m very pleased to give Ducati this front row, they deserve it. We’ve worked very hard all weekend, we are on the same bike that I tested in Sepang and also here, I used the same setup.”

“I’m pleased to get the front row with the old bike and all the credit to the team,” he added, referring to his use of the GP14, as opposed to the GP14.2 which Dovizioso now rides.

Tire problems again for MotoGP. MM, Crutchlow and Pol all had the front drop out of nowhere. All 3 using the same front tire.

Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) started from eighth on the grid in his 250th appearance in the premier class and was there to take advantage as Marquez crashed out of the race lead with 10 laps to go.

It is Rossi’s 108th career win and his 82nd in the top class of Grand Prix racing. The result is also the first all Yamaha podium since Le Mans 2008.

His teammate Lorenzo took second place even though his pace faded towards the end, with Cal Crutchlow crashing out ahead of him when in second on the last lap. Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Smith got his first MotoGP podium as nine riders either crashed or failed to finish, many of them frontrunners in the race.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) crossed the line fourth, with Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) as high as fifth. In his 200th Grand Prix race Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) was sixth and his teammate Scott Redding seventh.

Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar), Alex de Angelis (NGM Forward Racing) and Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) completed the top ten.

With the pressure off and the MotoGP™ title retained last weekend in Japan, Marquez had fired away at the front looking for a 12th win of the year and attempting to equal Mick Doohan’s record from 1997 for most premier-class GP wins in a single season. But Marquez’s race ended as he lost the front end coming out of Lukey Heights when he led by four seconds.

Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) was an early faller. Also early on Iannone (Pramac Racing) came into contact with the rear of Pedrosa’s bike, ending his race. The contact resulted in Pedrosa entering the pits due to bike damage.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) clashed with the rear of Aleix Espargaro’s bike, causing the German to fall unhurt. Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) was forced to stop off several corners later due to the damage to his bike. Broc Parks (Paul Bird Motorsport) entered the pits and retired at mid race distance.

Late on Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) lost the front at turn four while rapidly gaining on Lorenzo, attempting to claim his first MotoGP podium. With just half a lap to go Crutchlow (Ducati Team) fell from an almost guaranteed second place.
