What a crazy crash filled race we saw at PIsland. MM93 with a massive lead only to crash out. Poor Cal :( We are now at a Honda Fav track, im sure both Marc and Dani will be out for redemption. So happy to see Vale winning again!!

Introduction: Specifically built for speed and exciting racing, the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is one of the world’s best. The 2,300 acre complex which also houses a hotel, shopping centre, golf course and other sports facilities cost around 50m to construct and was built in just 14 months, holding its first Grand Prix in April 1999 and setting the standard for race circuits worldwide.
With four slow corners following two long straights and ten medium to high-speed corners, the wide track is particularly favourable to overtaking manoeuvres and plenty of open throttle. One of the longest laps in MotoGP is made all the more gruelling for riders by intense heat and humidity. Sepang is located around 50km south of Kuala Lumpur city.

Rossi on a high in second as Marquez looks to win again
It is Marquez’s hunger for victory which drove him to this year’s title in fine style with 10 wins from the opening 10 rounds, though since then he has added just the one further triumph at Silverstone and has now gone four races without a win. Marquez still has the chance to match - and eclipse - Mick Doohan’s record from 1997 for most premier class GP wins in a single season of 12 victories.

Last year at Sepang Marquez was second in the race behind his Honda colleague Dani Pedrosa and he will aim to go one better this time.

Another rider who knows all about winning is Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s remarkable nine time World Champion Rossi who delighted his fans at Phillip Island with his 82nd premier class victory in his 250th race in the top category of Grand Prix competition.

It was also Rossi’s 108th win across all classes and the 25 points from Australia helped him to move clear in second place in the World Championship. Rossi leads Lorenzo by eight points with two rounds remaining.

Lorenzo described his result in Australia as the luckiest second place of his career as his pace dropped in the second half of the race, but his rostrum appearance was the eighth consecutive podium of an excellent recent run.

Last year’s Sepang race winner Pedrosa was unlucky on Sunday at Phillip Island as his efforts came to en early end after he was hit by Andrea Iannone and was forced to retire. That DNF result saw Pedrosa slip to fourth in the standings, 25-points adrift of second placed Rossi.

Fifth overall ahead of the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix is the ever-consistent Andrea Dovizioso who stayed upright in Australia to take fourth, with nine riders in total unable to finish the race – including his Ducati Team colleague Cal Crutchlow who went down on the last lap with second place looking almost guaranteed.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith got his first MotoGP™ podium at round 16 and has forced his way back into the battle for sixth in the standings. That third place Phillip Island result took Smith up to eighth overall above Pramac Racing’s Iannone and LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl – both of whom aim to bounce back in Malaysia after their respective mistakes on Sunday.

Smith is now also only nine points behind sixth placed Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and eight adrift of his Tech 3 teammate, Aleix’s brother, Pol Espargaro – with the Spanish siblings also suffering Australian DNFs.

The first premier class practice session at Sepang will start at 9.55am local time (GMT +8) on Friday morning.

Pedrosa’s morning time tops Friday timesheets
In a wet afternoon outing Lorenzo led the way from Marc Marquez, with Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso and Aleix Espargaro also in FP2 the top five.

But the FP1 times set in the dry are what counts on the combined timesheets which contribute to the provisional Q2 automatic participation spots. Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) set a 2’01.379 lap to give him the lead in FP1.

Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) trailed by just 0.014s in second place, whilst Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was just 0.037s down on Pedrosa in third and Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was fourth in the morning run.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), Yonny Hernandez (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) completed Friday’s top ten.

Iannone recovering from Friday practice crash
In the morning session in the dry Iannone struggled to somewhat due to the pain in his left hip from the crash in Sunday’s race in Australia. Iannone was in difficulty especially in right corners where he could not lean as he wanted.

During a wet-dry FP2 Iannone was involved in a contact with MotoGP™ World Champion Marquez. Iannone crashed after Marquez touched his left arm as the riders lapped the Sepang track in tricky conditions.

The Italian suffered a severe contusion to his left arm but will still try to get back on track on Saturday, hoping that medical treatment will take the maximum effect.

Marquez visited the Pramac Racing garage after the incident apologisingand admitting his error. Race Direction spoke to the riders but no further action was taken.

Iannone explained, “This morning I decided to start cautiously because of the pain that I have in the hip. I struggled to ride and I could not lean especially on the right side. Unfortunately, at the start of FP2 it started to rain not allowing me to improve. About the contact with Marquez, I don’t know what to say, I only felt a contact. Marc admitted the error and immediately came to apologise. I have the tricep and the elbow very swollen and I hope to get back on track tomorrow.”

Marquez acknowledged, “I went immediately to apologise. I passed Dani (Pedrosa) at turn 14 and saw Andrea (Iannone) still very far away. I hit the brakes as always, he seemed slower, but actually he was entering the corner, except that at that point I had my line. So I was braking on the front and went straight and I hit him. I am very sorry for him.”

Nasty high side for Pol Espargaro during FP3, resulting in a red flag and a broken foot. Hopefully, he'll be back soon, although supposedly there's a chance he'll race Sunday.

Superb Sepang pole time from record breaker Marquez
Marquez (Repsol Honda) set a record-breaking time of 1’59.791s to secure pole ahead of teammate Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) who was 0.182s slower. The front row was completed by Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha) who set a 2’00.203s best lap.

Marquez is the first rider below the 2’00 mark on a race weekend at Sepang. This also marks his 50th career pole and 13th of the season, setting a new record.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) both qualified on the second row of the grid, both within a second of Marquez’ blistering lap.

Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing), Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) completed the top ten.

Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) qualified in 12th having advanced to Q2 but then being unfit to participate due to a big FP3 crash, which saw him break a bone in his left foot. His fitness to race will be assessed on Sunday morning.

Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) fell early in the Q2 session having advanced from Q1. The Japanese rider still qualified in 11th due to Pol Espargaro not taking part.

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) was declared unfit to participate further in the Grand Prix earlier in the day due to left arm injuries after his Friday crash left him struggling for strength and power.

Pol Espargaro’s Sepang race fitness to be assessed on Sunday
Therefore, the young Spanish rider decided to sit out FP4 as well as the Q2 session - which he still qualified for, due to scoring 10th position overall after FP3.

The high side occurred in the first corner while Espargaro was looking to post a fast lap. A small piece of glass damaged the oil radiator of his Yamaha machine and formed a small hole - causing a very fine oil leak, which was not visible to the rider.

The 23 year-old still hopes to contest Sunday’s 20-lap battle in Malaysia and the final decision will be made after his physical condition has been examined before the Warm Up. If he is fit he will start from 12th on the grid.

The rider from Barcelona said, “I am feeling sore after the heavy fall, but we must move on and I still hope to be able to compete in the race. I saw Dovizioso and Redding pointing to let me know something wasn’t right on the rear, but I couldn’t see anything wrong with the bike as the oil leak was so small. Therefore I continued riding normally as the bike felt the same and there was no reduction in power on the straight, but then I hit the brakes and fell at the first corner as oil had slipped onto the rear tyre.”

“If I can race, I hope to be in a position to try and use the Warm Up to make further adjustments to the bike, but the most difficult aspect to deal with will be changing the gears. We have to forget about today now. I have never ridden in this condition, but we will see how I recover overnight.”

Lorenzo pleased with front row slot in red hot Q2
Despite the fact that the lengthy track allows little time for multiple hot laps, Lorenzo made sure to leave pitlane last for the 15 minute qualifying heat to be ensured of some clear space. When on his way the Majorcan was fast straight out of the box and posted a 2’00.469 lap to take provisional third. He was unable to improve on his time on his second try and came into the pits for a fresh set of tyres with six minutes left on the clock.

Less than three minutes later Lorenzo was back out on the track for one last shot at claiming pole position and immediately posted a 2’00.203 lap, which saw him hold second place briefly, until a late effort by rival Dani Pedrosa relegated him to third. Marc Marquez took pole.

Lorenzo’s teammate Rossi had an eventful day at the Malaysian circuit. During FP4 the Doctor fell victim to a small crash. Luckily Rossi was uninjured and was back in the pit garage in plenty of time for the second Qualifying session.

Similar to his colleague, the nine time World Champion bided his time at the start of Q2. His first flying lap of 2’01.218 put him in fifth position before being pushed back to sixth by Andrea Dovizioso.

After a quick stop at the box, Rossi was back on his way with more than four minutes remaining, allowing the Italian to put in two more laps. He put his head down once more and clocked a 2’00.740 which briefly earned him fifth place before a last minute flurry of activity saw him end the session in sixth.

Lorenzo stated, “I am very happy with third place on the grid, because I knew that apart from the factory team some of the other Honda riders like Bradl or Bautista were going to be fast too. In the end I managed to claim the front row. I tried to get the pole position, but compared to Honda we needed just a little more acceleration when exiting the corners. I think we are getting closer in terms of race pace. This is probably one of the worst tracks for Yamaha, but I am very satisfied with the work we’re doing.”

Rossi added, “We had to try the hard front tyre and it was not so bad, but unfortunately I had some chatter and I crashed. We have to make a decision for the race, because with the medium front tyre we are closer to the limit and we have to ride smoother. Starting from the second row is not so bad considering that we struggled with the setting of the bike yesterday and today. We improved more today compared to yesterday, but we have to take another step for tomorrow.”

Iannone to miss Sepang race and head back early to Italy
On Saturday morning Iannone tested his condition in FP3 having sustained a severe contusion to his left arm in a Friday crash at Sepang, adding to his discomfort after hurting his left hip when he crashed out of the Phillip Island race last Sunday.

Unfortunately the pain in FP3 was significant and the Italian Pramac Racing rider was ruled unfit to continue this weekend. He will fly to Italy to undergo CAT and MRI scans in order to be 100% sure that there are no further complications.

He stated, “It was really important that I tried today in practice but I’m not at 100% and I can’t control the bike fully, so I prefer to try only in the practice because the risk is very high. The power in my arm is really not there. I don’t have a good feeling with the bike. It could be really dangerous. I am very sorry to skip this race because I wanted to finish the season well.”

“Tonight I will go to Italy and I want to work hard to recover for Valencia because it’s really important. I will have some more checks at home because it’s not really clear the situation. I just want to be at 100% in Valencia.”

At phillip island last week, Bradl went into the corner too hot and hit Aleix..taking him out of the race. Was clearly Bradls fault..looks like Aleix thinks he did it on purpose

so THIS is what caused Pol to eventually HS, he was warned he had a prob with the bike by other riders, but after looking around his bike he passed pit land and eventually crashed

Let's talk Moto3 for a bit.

I think Miller is going to take several physical beatings behind the trailers next year. That garbage today with AM12 was unnecessary and dangerous. Once, Miller had the inside line and intentionally went wide to push AM12 even wider. I can't see that type of riding not being punished (officially or unofficially) next year in GP. Then young Danny Kent, buds with JM, joins in the fun and piled on AM, too. Miller can be great based on his own merits, but he seems to crave and seek out incidents like today. Luckily, nobody went down or got hurt, but that's not really the point. He better grow out of that really soon, or he will have a miserable campaign to prove he belongs in the premier class.

Doom I agree. He'll have his hands full with the transition to GP That's for sure. Still can't believe how much they toss those moto 3 bikes around!! Re the GP. POOR Dani. Super happy for vale, put himself in a great spot to clinch P2 😆 and yet another record for MM93 tying the great Doohan for wins in a season. I'll post results later.

Fantastic Sepang contest won by Marquez
A huge crowd of more than 80,000 fans witnessed a great MotoGP race with Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) winning for the first time since Silverstone – riding superbly at round 17 and coming from behind after dropping back from pole on the first lap.

Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) took the early initiative in the race after a first crash by Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) who lost the front around Turn 15 while in second place. Pedrosa recovered to 11th before suffering a second crash.

Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) took the lead at midrace stage as he got in front of Lorenzo and was followed through by Marquez. Two laps later Marquez pushed in front of the Italian and he built up a sufficient gap to defend his lead.

Marquez’s victory is the 12th of his second season in MotoGP, equaling Mick Doohan’s record of most premier class victories in a single season. The result seals the premier class Constructor’s title for Honda and ends a run of four Yamaha victories.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) beat Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) to the line for fourth as the Englishman closed in on the last lap, only to run long on the final corner.

Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) rode bravely to sixth place, having broken a bone in his foot in a big crash on Saturday.

Yonny Hernandez (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) crossed the line seventh, staying upright having almost collided with Pol Espargaro’s rear wheel midrace.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was on course fourth again before he dropped several positions to eighth in the final laps, apparently suffering from a technical issue.

The top ten was completed by Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) and Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini).

Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) both fell at Turn 1 on the second lap. A mechanical problem forced an early retirement for Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), his third DNF in three races.

Turn 9 saw Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) lose the front as he chased his teammate Hiroshi Aoyama at the back of the top ten. Fellow Open Honda rider Karel Abraham (Cardio AB Motoracing) crashed some laps later.

Danilo Petrucci (Octo IodaRacing Team) retired with five laps to go, having been in a point scoring position. Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) also fell, but was able to remount and finish 11th. Alex De Angelis (NGM Forward Racing) retired on the final lap.

Another double podium for Movistar Yamaha MotoGP
Starting from sixth on the grid Rossi made an excellent start, getting up into second place on the second lap. Rossi closely followed his Movistar Yamaha MotoGP teammate Lorenzo until the midrace stage.

Lap ten saw Rossi pass Lorenzo, bringing Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) through with him. A mistake at Turn 15 on the next lap saw Marquez slip past the Italian. Lorenzo said later he found the conditions difficult having adopted a lighter training schedule during the flyaways.

Rossi finished 2.445s second behind Marquez and over one second ahead of Lorenzo, who came strong on the final lap with his harder tyre option.

With Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) crashing out of the race the battle for second in the championship is now between the two Yamaha riders as the paddock heads to Valencia for the final round of 2014.

"I’m very happy for this second place. It’s really important, we struggled during the weekend with the setting but this morning we found a good setting. I was never strong in practice, I couldn’t push at 100%. It was a long time since my last podium here, maybe 2010. I love this track so it’s great to return," reflected Rossi.

He added, "I battled Jorge at the start and that was my target as we’re fighting for second in the championship. After that I saw that I had a strong pace and I was battling with Marquez for the victory, the tyres let go towards the end and Marquez had something more. I had to slow while he was able to keep the same rhythm, still a great second place. Double the podiums and victories of last year has been a great season."

Lorenzo reflected, "Well, they were really difficult conditions, all weekend the conditions have been tough. It was the hottest race I’ve ever had here at Malaysia. I wasn’t the fittest as we trained a little soft. I felt strong physically and the bike was good with traction. My fitness (stamina) was not great as I haven’t trained hard these three weeks outside of Europe," explained Lorenzo.

He continued, "The first corners were really exciting and I was brave throughout the opening lap. Valentino was so strong this weekend and I couldn’t stay with them. He did a great job and I was losing a bit on the harder tyre. We had some problems with the fuel tank as the support broke and I was sliding forward under braking."
