The Cheste track has several layouts, running anti-clockwise with varying lengths. Rossi and Lorenzo contest second as champion Marquez arrives home
This year will be the 16th Valencia GP, which has been held every year since the first visit in 1999 and indeed this is the 13th successive year that the Ricardo Tormo circuit has hosted the final race of the season.

Last year Marquez arrived at the Spanish track for the final round looking to become the youngest ever premier class World Champion and this time he arrives in a more relaxed mood, having made history this season with his incredible performances to become the youngest ever back-to-back title winner at the top level.

The win by Marquez in Malaysia at the penultimate round was his 12th victory this year, equaling the record for most wins in the premier class in a single season, held by Mick Doohan since 1997. Another triumph would see Marquez take the record outright, with the Repsol Honda rider having already also set a record of 13 premier class poles in a season last time out at Sepang.

Spanish riders have won the last 10 MotoGP races on Spanish soil and the last non-Spanish rider to win a MotoGP race in Spain was Casey Stoner at Jerez in 2012.

The task for Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s nine time World Champion Rossi is to end that run, which would also see him clinch second place in the 2014 World Championship over his teammate Lorenzo, who trails him by 12 points as they head to Valencia.

Meanwhile, Marquez’s teammate Dani Pedrosa is out of the race for second but could well be a contender for victory on Sunday. Pedrosa is the most successful rider at the Valencia circuit with six wins, three in MotoGP, two in 250cc, and one in the 125cc class. No other rider has had more than three GP wins at the Valencia circuit.

Since the introduction of the four-stroke MotoGP formula in 2002, Honda has been the most successful manufacturer at Valencia with seven wins, whilst Yamaha has had three and Ducati two.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) will do his best to add to the Italian manufacturer’s Valencia win tally, with the Italian rider set to race alongside his British colleague Cal Crutchlow for the last time this weekend. Crutchlow will head to the CWM-LCR Honda Team for 2015 and in the post Valencia test next week he will get his first ride with his new squad.

Sunday’s race will also see the battle for sixth place overall come to a head, with Monster Yamaha Tech 3 teammates Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, in addition to Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), all in contention.

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) still has an outside chance of taking sixth but it would require a race win from the Italian on his return from injury, after he missed the Sepang contest due to a severe contusion to his left arm. Pol Espargaro will have checks on his injured foot this week but is expected to be fit to race.

Only two riders have competed at all 15 previous Grand Prix events at the Valencia circuit. Rossi is one of them and Randy de Puniet is the other, with the Frenchman set to extend that run of appearances with a wild card ride for Suzuki as the Japanese factory prepares to return to MotoGP in 2015.

Chapter ending for Bautista and Redding with new challenges ahead
The Gresini team are set to make the switch to Aprilia bikes for 2015, with current rider Alvaro Bautista on board, whilst his colleague Redding will move on to a new challenge next season riding a factory specification Honda RC213V for Marc VDS Racing Team as they move up to the premier class.

Fresh from an unlucky race at Sepang, where he was forced to retire after being hit by another rider after just two laps, Bautista will try to finish a difficult season with a good result in front of his home crowd. In the last two years, the Spaniard has finished in the top five in the season finale at Valencia - fourth in 2012 and fifth in 2013.

Bautista commented, “We head to Valencia after a long and really difficult season. Of course we will try to end the year in the best possible way, even if there is not much to say, given the recent results. It seems that this is not our season, definitely! We struggled with a lot of problems and we also suffered bad luck in the last race at Sepang, with a crash on the second lap in which we were involved with no faults. Simply, we have to wait and see what will be the situation after the first free practice, then we will give our best, as always”.

His teammate Redding, meanwhile, will try to defend the top position in the standings among the riders aboard the Open Class Honda RCV1000R.

The English rookie, who has 75 points in total - thanks to 15 point scoring finishes from 17 races - counts on an eight point advantage over Hiroshi Aoyama, his closest Open Honda rival in the championship.

Redding stated, “We expect another tough battle. We will try to confirm ourselves once again as that the best Open Class Honda, which would mean also keeping the first position in the championship among the riders aboard the RCV1000R machine. This is our goal and it would be nice to end the season achieving it.”

HRC announce Aoyama as test rider for 2015
The first step of this new project will see Aoyama riding the new Honda Open Class bike with a pneumatic valve engine, the RC213V-RS, in Valencia this weekend - for his final race with the Drive M7 Aspar team.

In next week’s three-day test at Valencia the 2015 RC213V-RS machine will be shared between Karel Abraham and Nicky Hayden.

Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC Executive Vice President, commented, "We are very pleased to confirm Hiro as a test rider for next year. He’s done a very good job this year and especially in these final races. This is an important project for HRC and we believe that he will be a valued addition for the development of HRC machines in the future. We have a long relationship with Hiro, and we look forward to continuing this into the future."

I want to know the number for what it will take for VR to take the runner up title.

He is ahead by 12 points, so he doesn't need to place in front of Lorenzo

only way Vale will not take P2 overall is if he finishes worse than 4th, this is of course with JL99 winning. if he takes 4th it's a tie in which case Vale still takes it in a tie breaker. So P5 for Vale with JL99 winning then Lorenzo takes it

Rossi evaluates title chances for 2015
Rossi has produced another remarkable set of performances in 2014, improving on his 2013 form with 12 podiums and two victories this year – in his 15th premier class campaign.

The nine-time World Champion believes a tenth World title is achievable and gave this assessment of his chances, “I think that it is not impossible next year. This is the target and I say that because we can improve from this year to next year. Already the work for next year started, throughout all this season, in fact from the last test of last season. We have demonstrated good potential already.”

“I think I can improve next year, especially my team and especially Silvano (Galbusera - Crew Chief) with one year more of experience. He can improve because he knows MotoGP better. We can also improve the way of working between us because it has just been the first season. I know him better now and he knows me more, and the way I want the bike.”

However, Rossi also acknowledged, “But at the same time it will be very, very hard, because firstly I expect Jorge to be very strong from the beginning. At the beginning of this year he had some problems but from Sachsening he’s been so strong at all the tracks, so he is a real contender. Then with Marc we cannot forget that he won 12 races this year. That is ten more than me and he has a lot of points advantage!”

“So to try to fight for the championship with these two guys we have to make another step. I will try.”

Repsol Honda rider Marquez goes in search of a record 13th premier class win in a single season this weekend and he started the final round of the season in good shape as he dislodged Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) from P1 by 0.193s at the end of the session. Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) trailed Marquez by 0.344s in third.

Marquez the pace setter as final round gets underway
Marquez’s (Repsol Honda Team) time of 1’31.296 from the morning session was the fastest of the day, with Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) second best overall courtesy of a 1’31.489 lap. Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was third fastest on Friday courtesy of his best lap from FP2, which was less than 0.1s off Lorenzo’s pace.

Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) were both in Friday’s top five, which featured a real mix of manufacturers and technical packages.

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) completed the top ten.

Wild card Randy de Puniet (Team Suzuki MotoGP) improved by over a second towards the end of the FP2 session, before a technical fault with the GSX-RR saw him pull over at trackside with smoke pouring from engine. He was 19th overall.

"Wild card Randy de Puniet (Team Suzuki MotoGP) improved by over a second towards the end of the FP2 session, before a technical fault with the GSX-RR saw him pull over at trackside with smoke pouring from engine. He was 19th overall. "

Easy on RdP people, he has been testing NOT RACING ever since he left the paddock, those are two very different things. Give him time, and Valencia will in no way reflect the potential of the XRH until midway next season.

Saturday morning sees Marquez on top again at Valencia
Despite a light crash for Repsol Honda’s young World Champion he led the way with a 1’30.950 lap, which put him 0.133s ahead of Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Espargaro. Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Lorenzo was 0.196s down on Marquez.

The top five also featured two Italians, Ducati pair Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team). It was an improved showing from Iannone as he had still looked somewhat impeded by his Sepang injuries on Friday.

The top ten was completed by Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing), Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3).

The likes of Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP), Yonny Hernandez (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) and Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) all missed out on automatic Q2 spots and will be looking for a hot lap in Q1.

Positive feelings for homecoming champion Marquez
Fresh from his win in Sepang, Marquez returned home to Spain relaxed and ready to push hard in front of his home fans. The weekend started well for the Honda rider, leading in FP1 with a 1’31.296s, the best time from the opening day of practice. FP2 saw him set a 1’31.454s, also placing him top of the session.

Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) followed Marquez on combined times, just 0.193s behind his rival.

Pedrosa completed FP1 in fourth and dropped to sixth in FP2, however his best time of 1’31.647s was still good enough for fifth overall. The Repsol Honda stalwart is looking to bounce back from a double DNF in Australia and Malaysia.

Marquez reflected on a positive first day, “The best thing was how I felt on the bike. Finishing fastest is a reference, but the most important thing is that the pace was good, and we have been improving and testing things out. This afternoon the track was a little slower, but we hope to continue improving tomorrow. I'm sure that there will be a nice fight for pole between myself, Jorge, Dani and Valentino.”

Pedrosa added, “Today will did a lot of tyre testing, above all with the front. We tried out three different types of front tyre and rode with the soft rear in the two practice sessions. I think that overall the state of the track allowed us to ride fast, although in the afternoon it felt harder to improve our times because of the wind. We have to work to improve our setup and make a good tyre choice for the race, because the times are tight for both the factory bikes and non-factory bikes.”
