Moto GP 2015 Round 8 Assen ***SPOLER***

It was quite the race in Catalunya, JL99 taking it home yet again for 4 in a row now. Marc sadly crashing out again :( He will likely use the 2014 chassis with his new SA, so we'll see how that set up works?? he has got to get on the podium!! Vale keeping his lead alive by coming home in P2. Lots of crashes incl AD04, so were will the Ducs be in Assen??? Looking like a Yam Battle

About the circuit:

Assen is the only venue to have held a round of the Motorcycle World Championship every year since its creation in 1949. The circuit was purpose built for the Dutch TT in 1955, with previous events having been held on public roads. The track is narrow, with rapid changes in direction, and is fully surrounded by grass banks and grandstands, providing excellent viewing for the hundreds of thousands of fanatical spectators who are drawn to the most prestigious event in Dutch motorsport every year. A huge favourite with riders, Assen is well known for its festive and extravagant atmosphere.

In 1999 the circuit was modified with a new grandstand, control tower, press centre and renovated boxes. Modifications to the Assen circuit over the winter of 2005/6 saw the length of the championship’s longest serving track cut from over 6km down to 4.555km/2.83miles.

The cathedral to play host to epic Yamaha showdown
The Motul TT Assen will play host to a battle between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo for lead in the World Championship standings.

The TT Circuit Assen, the only venue that has hosted a Grand Prix every year since the World Championships began back in 1949, is set to be the scene of a showdown between Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi to decide who sits atop of the championship standings.

The Movistar Yamaha riders arrive at the legendary circuit separated by just one point, with Rossi still holding the upper hand, but only just, after Lorenzo’s incredible run of four wins in a row. One thing is guaranteed, with third placed Andrea Iannone 43 points further back from Lorenzo, either he or Rossi will leave the Dutch GP as championship leader…but who will it be?

The smart money would be on Lorenzo after his imperious form in the last four races have seen him lead a record 103 consecutive laps. Rossi has closed the gap in terms of race pace to his teammate, but unless he can improve his Qualifying performance, it is hard to see anyone stopping the Spaniard in his current mood.

The 4.5km TT Circuit Assen plays to the Yamaha M1’s strengths, and they are the most successful manufacturer since the start of the MotoGP™ era with seven victories. In addition, both Rossi and Lorenzo will have benefitted from a recent private test where they evaluated a new chassis for the YZR-M1.

Out of the current MotoGP™ field, Rossi is the most successful rider at the circuit, having taken nine victories across all classes (6x MotoGP™, 1x 250cc, 1x 125cc), with the last coming in 2013.

Last year’s race winner at the Dutch GP was Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, as he rode a brilliant flag to flag race to take victory ahead of Andrea Dovizioso. Although the reigning MotoGP™ World Champions title defence hopes currently lie in tatters after crashing out of the last two races in Barcelona and Mugello. Marquez finds himself 69 points behind Rossi as he continues to struggle with the engine characteristics of his RC213V.

In effort to cure his woes, Marquez even tried out his 2014 chassis with the current swingarm and engine at the post-Catalan GP test. Despite only managing five laps with the old chassis during the rain affected test, Marquez felt it was an improvement, although whether it means he will be able to close the gap sufficiently to the Yamaha’s remains to be seen. One thing is for sure; Marquez clearly enjoys the Dutch track, as like Rossi, he has tasted victory in each class (1xMotoGP™, 2x Moto2, 1x 125cc) before.

Marquez’s Dani Pedrosa heads to Assen off the back of his first podium of the season at the Catalan GP full of confidence that his career threatening arm pump have been resolved. The Spaniard stood on the podium in last year’s rain affected Dutch GP, but has only won once before at the circuit, in the 125cc race back in 2002.

MotoGP Assen: Rossi: Lorenzo race potential equal to mine 23 June 2015
Valentino Rossi sees his and Jorge Lorenzo's race pace as very similar heading to Assen and is determined to step up his qualifying performance

Valentino Rossi feels his and Jorge Lorenzo's race potential at Assen is on a level par and says he must improve in qualifying if he is to hold on to the lead in the MotoGP championship.

The Movistar Yamaha team-mates are separated by just a single point after Lorenzo claimed his fourth consecutive victory last time out in Catalunya, while Rossi narrowly missed out in second place.

The six-time MotoGP World Champion knows his task in Assen is a straightforward equation, to hold on to his championship lead he must finish ahead of his team-mate. Rossi is anticipating another difficult battle with Lorenzo but feels neither of them has a distinct edge when it comes to race pace.

“Assen will be another very intense weekend,” Rossi said. “After seven races the difference between me and Jorge is just one point and to keep the first place I have to finish in front of him. It won't be easy because Jorge is in a great shape, but so am I. Jorge's and my potential are very similar.”

The Italian's Achilles heel has been his results in qualifying which have seen him start races lower down on the grid compared to his rivals and has had to battle through the pack, while Lorenzo has charged clear at the front.

“First we must improve our qualifying and we will work on making a better start to the race in Assen,” he confirmed.

Michael van der Mark denied MotoGP debut at Assen 23 June 2015
Michael van der Mark will not make his MotoGP debut this weekend filling in for the injured Karel Abraham at Assen, the Dutchman has confirmed

Michael van der Mark has ruled himself out of making his MotoGP debut this weekend at Assen despite speculation he was set to fill in for the injured Karel Abraham.

According to Dutch website Racesport.nl the 22-year-old, who claimed two WSBK podiums for Pata Honda at Assen this year and will be teaming-up with Casey Stoner and Takumi Takahashi for the Suzuka 8 Hours, was “almost certain” to replace the injured Abraham at his home event.

However, the Honda rider has confirmed via Twitter he will not be racing this weekend at Assen despite making himself available to the team.

Too bad Mark vanderMark can't go. I was hoping he'd break into motogp at his home circuit. It would make things real intetesting this weekend. With how he's pushing the Pata honda in wsbk, it should only be a matter of time until he's running with the big dogs in gp.

Lorenzo at physical peak for Dutch GP
The official Press Conference kicked off round eight of the MotoGP™ World Championships at the legendary TT Circuit Assen, the only track to host an event every year since the World Championships began back in 1949.

Valentino Rossi arrives at Assen leading the championship standings by just one point from his teammate Jorge Lorenzo. The Italian has won at Assen eight times before (1x125cc, 1x250cc, 6xMotoGP™), although the last time he stood on the top step at the “Cathedral” was back in 2013. Rossi knows he has to improve his performance in qualifying to have any chance of beating Lorenzo: “Yeah, Jorge is better than me in qualifying; he’s always a little bit faster. It’s difficult because there are a lot of bikes that are very fast and Suzuki and Ducati have the extra soft tyre to help. The Hondas are also very fast, but Jorge has the same tyre and bike as me, so we need to improve. Starting from the third row is tough, in Barcelona I had a good pace and we didn’t lose much time to get to second, but already Jorge was far. Every weekend and track has a different story so we have to understand the potential of the bike and the tyres and make the maximum from Friday.”

Rossi also revealed that he will be evaluating a new frame over the course of the weekend after trying it out in a private test: “The plan was to try the new frame at two different tracks and it was important to try in Barcelona (Official test) because we can compare back to back from the race, but the conditions were very bad. We only tried the new frame in Aragon and I think we will try it tomorrow and to fully understand it in practice if we have something better or not.”

His teammate Jorge Lorenzo has won the last four races in a row, and is in the form of his life coming into the Dutch GP. Lorenzo has also led the last 103 laps across the line as he looks to add to his two MotoGP™ World Championship titles this season. The Spaniard feels he is experiencing one of the best moments of his career: “I have had some very good periods in my career, but probably we didn’t have this bike. Especially in the race our bike is very constant and we can keep a high pace, this is why we’ve dominated on Sunday till now. For now, I’m in good shape, for the first time I beat my trainer on the mountain bike so I’m really proud of that! But we still have to work hard and find a good set up.”

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez faces make or break time in Holland. The reigning MotoGP™ World Champion heads into the weekend trailing Rossi by 69 points in the standings, after crashing out in front of his home fans at the Catalan GP. Marquez is hoping he can replicate his success from last year when he won at Assen, and will be trying out the 2014 frame on his RC213V in an effort to improve his fortunes: “Of course after the last two races we need a good result. Assen is a track I like, last year was good but it was also a mixed weather race. Two years ago Vale and Jorge were very strong. We’ll have to see how this weekend goes. We have a good confidence, unfortunately the Barcelona test was raining so we couldn’t try everything but we’ll try to do our best. I used on Monday after the race the 2014 frame, it was good and I will use it here.”

Ducati Team’s Andrea Iannone arrives in Assen having not finished outside of the top six all season. The Italian is now third in the Championship standings, after finishing fourth last time out in Barcelona. Iannone clearly feels that the GP15 will be suited to the nature of the Assen circuit: “It’s really important for me in this moment, a positive one, to keep working. The GP14 and 13 were very difficult in this track and I hope the GP15 improves on this track because the agility of this bike is much better. I hope for the podium. I want to fight for the podium in every race, but the victory is better!”

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith is the leading Satellite rider in the standings after two consecutive fifth-placed finishes. The Brit currently has 68 points, just one less than Marquez, and 21 more than his nearest Satellite rival Cal Crutchlow. Smith is clearly enjoying the 2015 season so far compared to last year: “It’s been a big change this season and for the better. It’s been nice to showcase what I can really do. Obviously the main object for this season was to be consistent and to be the top Satellite rider; right now I have over a 20-point lead. Nothing spectacular but we’ve been finishing races and gaining experience.”

Dani Pedrosa continued his encouraging return from arm-pump surgery at the Catalan Grand Prix, after being forced to miss three races. The Spaniard managed to finish on the podium for the first time this season in Barcelona, and he will be hoping for more of the same at a circuit where he has some happy memories: “Yes my first victory was here when I was just a kid, it was a really happy moment for all of my family. I still remember it! Yeah, it was special to be on the podium at home (Catalan GP) after everything that has happened. I didn’t have the best race. I was 11th on the first lap after a bad start. After the first laps, I wasn’t progressing much but then I went well and hopefully we can do things better here. We need to do a better qualifying and finally do one good start!”

Smith brought the biggest laugh of the press conference when he was asked the secret to his fantastic race starts this year, to which he simply replied, “Big balls and brake late!”

Well I think it's safe to say DP26 is back in form wink emoticon glad to see, well done Dani. Marc's FP1 cold tire crash had me shaking my head.... all good he looks strong and will be fighting for the win Sat!!! weather still a ? as always with Assen. Hopefully Vale can Qual on front row.

FP1 Results:
World championship leader Valentino Rossi leads the timesheets during opening practice for the Dutch MotoGP at Assen.

Rossi and title rival Jorge Lorenzo each have one new Yamaha chassis to try this weekend, while Honda's Marc Marquez has reverted to the 2014 Honda chassis.

Marquez fell on his out-lap, the Spaniard running through the gravel and then sliding off on the grass.

Valentino Rossi takes pole position for the Dutch MotoGP round at Assen, ahead of Aleix Espargaro and Marc Marquez.

Rossi currently leads the championship by one point from team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who qualified in eighth.

Assen is the only surviving event from the inaugural 1949 grand prix season, but this year's race will be the last to be held on a Saturday.

Championship leaders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have a new Yamaha chassis this weekend, while Honda's Marc Marquez has reverted to the 2014 Honda chassis.

Karel Abraham is absent due to a foot injury at Catalunya...

Rossi conquers qualifying demons
Valentino Rossi shows just how much winning still means to him by successfully changing his whole approach to qualifying at the Dutch GP.
Valentino Rossi is known as the “greatest of all time” (GOAT) in motorcycle racing, and his record speaks for itself. He has nine World Championship titles to his name, 110 career GP victories, 92 fastest laps, and 203 podiums. Yet if anyone needed proof that the 36 year old still has just as strong a desire to win as he did when he made his World Championship debut 19 years ago, you just had to look at his performance over the last two days at the Motul TT Assen.

Rossi’s famous dislike for the two-tiered shorter qualifying sessions that were introduced in 2013 is well documented. His struggle to head out and immediately be up to full speed in the 15 minute Q2 session has led to the Italian having to fight his way through the field on race day to have any chance of winning. At the start of the season, this was not so much of an issue, as his teammate Jorge Lorenzo was off the pace, and Marc Marquez was struggling with the 2015 version of his RC213V. Rossi could focus on his race set-up during practice, knowing that he could make up any lost time in Qualifying during the race, highlighted by the fact his two victories this season have come from 8th on the grid.


It all changed though when Lorenzo experienced a resurgence in form to take the last four race wins in dominant fashion, leading from start to finish. Suddenly, Rossi could not afford to let his teammate have a head start, and this meant that Rossi needed to go back to the drawing board if he was going to find a way to improve his qualifying fortunes, or he would just have to get used to finishing behind his Spanish teammate. Rossi is no fool, and he admitted just how much this pole position meant to him: “It’s so important because during this season I’m competitive in the race but I struggle so much in practice, too much! It’s not just the pole, but I’m never on the first row. When you start behind sometimes you can make a good result anyway, but it’s more difficult and in the last races with Jorge starting at the front he was impossible to catch, even if like in Barcelona my pace was good.”

At the age of 36 it is no easy feat to change the way you approach a Grand Prix weekend, especially if your method has essentially remained the same throughout your whole career, but Rossi knew he had to do something: “In Barcelona we worked with some more settings and tried the new chassis in Aragon. I like it a lot and my speed has been very good since then. You can arrive in the Qualifying stronger when you start strong. My target was the front row but for sure pole is a special feeling.”

Psychologically, Rossi dealt a huge blow to his title rivals by showing the desire, even at this stage in his career, to completely re-evaluate his whole approach. The tables have now been turned on Lorenzo, who will ironically start Saturday’s race from eighth, knowing that he can't let Rossi get away at the front if he wants to usurp his teammate in the championship standings.

Another rider who has shown incredible psychological strength to bounce back from a poor run of form that sees him trail Rossi by 69 points in the standings after just seven races, is Marc Marquez. The Repsol Honda rider has crashed out of the last two races to leave his title defence hopes in tatters, and leading many to criticise his “win it or bin it” approach. Surely even the Spaniard must have started to have some doubts?

Marquez though, has shown he also has the mental strength to mount a comeback, going 'back to the future' with his RC213V and using last years frame with his 2015 engine, swingarm and electronics package. His improved feel with this hybrid bike led the reigning MotoGP™ Champion to declare that he had returned to form: “It’s nice to be back! This circuit we’ve always struggled and we thought we’d be really far behind Yamaha, maybe we’re a bit closer than usual and in the last races. The rhythm is good and I’m happy we’ve been able to work towards the race with a different set up and different electronics.”

Using FP4 as an indicator, Marquez does indeed have the most impressive race pace of all of the riders who will line up on the MotoGP™ grid tomorrow. He recorded eight laps in the 1’33’s during the session, which riders generally use to focus on their race set-ups. Lorenzo was the only other rider to get anywhere near this feat as he also recorded right laps in the 1’33’s, but his starting position on the grid will be a huge handicap at a circuit that can be notoriously difficult to overtake at.

Rossi himself, who set the fastest ever time by a motorbike around the legendary TT Circuit Assen in Qualifying, could only manage two laps in the 1’33s during FP4, which had some people wondering if 'The Doctor' had sacrificed his race pace to focus on qualifying. This bodes well for Marquez who will start from third for Saturdays race, although as we all know, Rossi has a habit of upping his game on race day.

The surprise package could come in the form of Aleix Espargaro, who starts the race from the middle of the front row after just missing out on his second consecutive pole of the season. The Spaniard might have an extra advantage at the start of the race too if he can utilise the soft tyre available to his team, but only if the weather conditions are right: “Today I was able to do 20 laps with the soft. If tomorrow isn’t sunny we can think to race with the soft, in the right side it’s a little softer so maybe we’re one or two tenths faster in the start.”

The Team Suzuki Ecstar rider knows though, that with less than half a second separating the top 11 riders in qualifying, he cannot afford to slip-up if he wants to claim his first MotoGP podium: “The level is very high, you can’t make a mistake in any session. For example I’m P2 now but I was not able to be in the top ten in the morning. Everything is really tight.”

Of course, all this conjecture could be meaningless if the race is affected by the weather as it so often is at the legendary Dutch circuit, but even if the rain does arrive we should be in for one hell of a 26-lap race come 2pm on Saturday.

WOW great race between my 2 guys lol, So happy to see Marc back! Awesome win by Vale, he really put the hammer down in the last few laps!! Thx GOD!! Vale didnt loose it on the gravel, all hell would have broken loose thats for sure tongue emoticon Vale increases his lead to 10pts, Marc back in winning form, couldnt be happier at the moment. MotoGP Race Director Mike Webb has explained exactly why the last lap Assen clash between Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez was deemed a racing incident.

The pair were battling for victory when reigning champion Marquez attempted to pass current title leader Rossi into the final chicane. Contact was made at the first apex of the right-left-right sequence, resulting in Rossi running off and cutting the rest of the corner before re-joining to win by 1.2s from Marquez.

Afterwards, the riders clearly held very different opinions about the incident.

Rossi said: "My view is that I am in front and Marc touched the middle of my bike. His touch pushed me outside the track".

Marquez said: "I studied perfectly the last chicane, how to put the bike in the correct place, but OK I didn't expect he would cut! In the end, what I feel is that we won the race."

Asked who would have won without the contact, Rossi commented “I was in front”, while Marquez responded “I was on the inside!”

In terms of Race Direction's judgement, the decisive factor seems to have been that Rossi was in front when the contact occurred.

“We've obviously reviewed the incident from all the camera angles we have. The decision is racing incident. No advantage was gained,” Webb told Crash.net. “The basis of that decision is primarily the helicopter shot that shows at every stage Valentino was ahead. So Valentino had the right to the line.

“So Valentino was ahead. He was not passed. As they reached the apex of the right-hand turn Marc touched Valentino, which made [Valentino] go wide. So that's a racing incident. It's unavoidable.

“The two balancing things are that it was a hard pass with contact and you are not allowed to push another rider off the line. But the end result was that they entered and exited that series of corners in the same position. No advantage gained. End of story.”

MotoGP Assen: Rossi: Marquez left me with no chance 27 June 2015
Valentino Rossi says he had no choice other than to take to the gravel after contact was made with Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez on the final lap of the Dutch MotoGP at Assen.

Valentino Rossi said Marc Marquez left him with no option other than to run through the gravel after the pair collided at the final chicane in the Dutch MotoGP at Assen.

Rossi kept his M1 upright and won the race, with Marquez also avoiding a fall as the Repsol Honda rider took second place in a controversial end to the race.

Marquez attempted a pass on the brakes on Rossi's inside as the pair entered the chicane, with Rossi refusing to budge from his line before lifting his Yamaha after contact was made.

Both riders made it clear they felt the other was in the wrong when quizzed on the clash in the post-race press conference, with Rossi stating that he had 'no chance' because Marquez 'pushed me on the right'.

Asked if he leant on Marquez to initiate the contact, Rossi said: “No – maybe it's better another time we see the image because I think that everybody has this idea.

“My idea is that I was completely in front in the last chicane. I braked hard, stayed in the centre and was already into the first [apex] on the right when he come on to me. But I just see his tyre, so he touched me just behind the elbow. That means [the contact] was at the maximum the middle of my bike. I braked and I was on line to make the chicane

“I braked and entered on the right to make the chicane and I was on the line, but unfortunately his touch put me on the outside and I don't have any chance to stay on the line because he pushed me on the outside.

“At that moment I don't have any chance because I can't stay in the chicane because the speed is quite high,” Rossi added.

“So I go on the gravel and the first reaction I have is to open the throttle because I don't know how deep [the gravel trap is] and I don't want to crash on the gravel. I was lucky to control the bike.

“This is my version, we know his version, but I remember it like this.”

Asked if he practices riding through gravel traps at speed at home at his ranch, Rossi replied with a smile: “No, usually no.”

Rossi's pit board displayed the letters 'BRK' with around seven or eight laps remaining but he dismissed the message, saying it was 'nothing'.

“I was asked already three or four times this question but no, it is nothing, it is something for changing the engine brake that I have to remember.”

Smarting Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez believes he got the raw end of the deal following a controversial final-chicane clash with Valentino Rossi at Assen.

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez said he believes he won the Dutch TT following his explosive last chicane showdown with race winner Valentino Rossi.

Marquez attempted a move on the brakes on the inside of the Movistar Yamaha rider on the final lap and the pair collided, with Rossi pulling his M1 upright and riding through the gravel before returning to the track to claim his third win of the season.

Defending MotoGP World Champion Marquez also managed to avoid falling to bring his Honda home in second place as he returned to the rostrum for the first time since Jerez at the beginning of May, where he took second behind Jorge Lorenzo.

Marquez seemed ill at ease with the manner in which the race was decided and afterwards said he felt he was the real winner.

“I did a mistake when three laps remained and he opened a gap, but on the last lap I recovered it and during all the race I had studied perfectly the last chicane, to put the bike in the correct place, to not give the space to him,” Marquez said.

“But okay, I didn't expect that he will cut [the corner]! In the end, what I feel is that we won the race but now for it doesn't matter. For the next race it is most important that we will come back in a great level and we will try to be there.

“It's really important for me and for Honda and for the team to come back, especially in a circuit where we are struggling, but the most important is what I say – we enjoyed again on the track and on the bike. Still we need to work in some points, especially in the last part of the race.”

Marquez, though, said he was feeling 'very happy' to be back on the podium despite the controversy surrounding the end of the race and looked much more comfortable on the RC213V after reverting back to a configuration using the 2014 chassis with Honda's updated swingarm at Assen.

“I'm feeling very happy because we come back on the top and the most important thing is we come back fighting for the race,” he said.

“I am happy because at this circuit normally we are struggling but in the end the most important thing is that I enjoyed [myself] again on the bike. Still we need to improve some points that I saw behind Valentino but okay, during the race I was quiet, calm and behind him I was studying very well which points where I can overtake him, where I can prepare.

“In the first part I was able to be even faster but I took care about the tyres and I am happy for that. Now we arrive in Germany and we will see there.”

It was VERY nice seeing MM back in the battle. Rossi, what is there to say? He is still THE baddass.

Post race conference was hilarious! I'd also like to see the helicopter footage of that last chicane. Can't even find photos of it anywhere.
