Moto GP 2016 Round 2 Argentina ***SPOILER***

Well round 1 in Qatar was a great race, could have been better though, somewhat predictable imo, really too bad Iannone had crashed out, Argentina will be interesting to say the least, can Jorge win back to backs? will Vale miss the podium again?? and just where will the Ducs and the Repsols finish....


About the circuit
The Termas de Río Hondo Circuit is located 6km from the city which gives the venue its name, in the Province of Santiago del Estero. It was built in a 150 hectare area and officially inaugurated on May 11, 2008, during the visit of Argentina´s Touring Car Racing championship. In 2012, the reconditioning, enlargement and modernization of the circuit began, with the purpose of turning it into Latin America’s most modern, safe and vibrant circuit.

A three-day test gave the MotoGP™ World Championship a chance to prepare for Qatar; in Argentina it’s straight to work for round two.
The 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship season got off to a thrilling start under the Qatar floodlights, Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) producing a near faultless ride to start his title defence with the full set; pole position, a race win and the fastest lap. He wasn’t alone though as Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) stuck with him for almost the entirety of the race.

Not only did 2016 start in Qatar, but the first moves for the 2017 season were also made. Valentino Rossi signed on for another two years with Yamaha while Bradley Smith committed to the KTM MotoGP™ project for 2017 and 2018. The other 22 grid slots still remain a mystery for the most part.

Qatar was unique, not just because of the race’s setting and ambiance but also because of the lead up to action. A three-day test was held at the circuit prior to the event, giving riders and teams almost unlimited track time to set up their machines to suit the track, with new tyres and electronics having this base assisted greatly. For Argentina they will not have this preparation, they head to the track knowing how the tyres and electronics behave in Sepang, Phillip Island and Losail, but not at the Termas De Rio Hondo. For some teams and riders this will be a step outside their comfort zone and a true preview of what the season may hold.

Lorenzo heads to the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina with only one previous podium finish at the Argentine track; his third in 2014. Of all the circuits currently on the calendar this is his weakest track, but new Michelin tyres may change his fortunes.

2016 has been almost a carbon copy of 2015 so far for Andrea Dovizioso: in 2015 he battled with a Yamaha for victory in Qatar and again narrowly missed out on victory. Fortunately for Dovizioso if history continues to repeat itself it could very well see him in second at the Argentina round again. In Qatar the Ducati blasted the competition down the straight, proving that there is nothing wrong with the new engine.

Speaking of top speeds, Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) was able to reach a staggering 351.2Km/h in Warm Up to set a new speed record. He may have crashed during the race but before his fall he was stronger than ever and able to wrestle past both Lorenzo and Dovizioso. In perhaps the best form of his career and with one of the fastest engines ever seen in MotoGP ™, expect ‘The Maniac’ to be a real threat around Termas De Rio Hondo’s 4,806meters, 1,076 of which are a long straight. Every visit to Argentina has resulted in a top ten finish for Iannone, in 2015 he only lost out on a podium finish in the final corner.

Back in 2015, Valentino Rossi took victory and took to the top step of the podium in a Diego Maradona shirt with the number ten on it. The number ten is still relevant in 2016 as Rossi still hunts his tenth title, another win in Argentina would be a huge boost to that ambition. Only 0.1s separated Rossi from the podium in Qatar, the Italian left to wonder what could have been had he used the soft rear.

Tyres played a major role in the 2015 race in Argentina, Rossi make a heroic late charge to snatch victory. Could he use the same strategy in 2016 or will he follow Lorenzo’s lead from Qatar and stay strong in front?

The Argentina GP will be another major test for Marc Marquez, the Spaniard able to turn his fortunes around in Qatar when his team reverted several of their settings back to what they were in the test. In Argentina there will be no same circuit test data to fall back on, Marquez and the Honda still remain a largely unknown quantity in 2016, going well in some tests and struggling in other, starting the Qatar weekend outside the top five and then battling for victory on race day. His record in Argentina is equally as contrasting, winning in 2014 and failing to finish in 2015.

For his teammate, Dani Pedrosa, it’s been a much better start to the season that last year. Although he again failed to finish on the podium in Qatar, he left without injury and is fit to race in Argentina, his second visit to the track. Like Marquez, Pedrosa is still finding his feet with the new electronics.

Much like Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) will also be racing in Argentina for just the second time. In 2014 the Brit missed the race due to injury, but managed a podium finish, his only one of the season, on his first visit in 2015. It was an exceedingly difficult weekend in Qatar for Crutchlow who failed to finish the race due to a crash.

Both Maverick Viñales (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Yakhnich) had shown well in testing and were expecting strong, potentially podium-challenging rides in Qatar. Neither were quite able to produce that as they were unable to find the same feeling they had during testing. Argentina offers both riders a chance to gain more momentum and focus on a steadier build to a potential podium challenge.

Redding’s teammate Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Yakhnich) will miss the Grand Prix, having aggravated his hand injury during practice in Qatar and requiring more surgery. Michel Pirro, the Ducati test rider, will fill in for his fellow Italian as long as he’s out injured. Petrucci’s recovery period is still unknown.

Michelin will also face a new challenge in Argentina having tested at the circuit. The options available for front tyres will therefore be the hard (yellow band) and medium (no band) tyres. Rear tyre choices are from the hard (yellow band) and medium options. For the first time this season the full wet and intermediate tyres will also be available should they be needed.

Can Lorenzo continue his run? Will Rossi repeat his 2015 victory? Or could Ducati return to the top step of the podium for the first time in almost six years? Find out when the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina begins at 09:00 Local Time on Friday the first of April.

Here is a photo of the then 16-year-old at the event (copyright Gold and Goose).

The Italian finished the race in sixth place, 7.379s behind countryman Stefano Perugini, but went on to win in Brno later that year - the first of his 112 victories so far.

Rossi - now 37 and the oldest rider on the MotoGP grid - has won nine world championships, missing out at the final round in 2006 and 2015.

The Doctor will continue his quest for a tenth title during this weekend's event in Argentina.

It's basically all but "officially confirmed" that Lorenzo has signed with Ducati. The information is spilling out of the paddocks faster than BP in to the Gulf. Might be a little bit before either party confirms, but people privy to the information have reported it's a done deal. Next season is going to be epic.

Wow, the smoothest rider (Lorenzo) on the fastest bike (Ducati) would be deadly. This season is going to be so great.

it would be something to see indeed!! we'll have to see how it all plays out, but David's sources usually very good! Most riders contracts are up after this season, most are prob waiting to see what he does first lol. If he does go to Ducati, im not sure where Dovi will end up first , secondly Yam will likely go after Maverick for Jorges seat, if Honda gets Maverick then there is Rins? That being said HRC may very well want Dani back?

The perils of FP3

That could end up being a major problem for the reigning world champion. The weather forecast for the next couple of days is extremely unsettled, with rain likely to fall at any time. If it falls on Saturday morning, that will leave Jorge Lorenzo stranded in Q1, with a lot of work to do to qualify in a decent position. It would also leave him with less time to find some kind of solution to his problems, boding ill for the race. Then again, it is likely to rain on Sunday as well, turning the race into a lottery.

It is rain which the riders fear most. Apart from the effect on progressing to Q2 – Andrea Iannone, another rider who thrives on corner speed, is in the same boat as Jorge Lorenzo, and one position behind him – there is also the possible effect on the track. "From one point of view it's not so bad, because last year I was quite strong in the wet," Valentino Rossi told the press, putting a brave face on it. "But I'm very worried in this track in the wet, because it's very dirty and quite slippery, so in the wet, maybe the situation is difficult." Bradley Smith was a little more open minded. "I don't know if it would actually clean it, so it pushes the dirt to one side, or it makes it worse. We've never had rain here in Argentina, so nobody knows how the grip is going to perform or how it will be."

The real beneficiaries of the tough conditions were the riders who are used to sliding a bike around, especially those with dirt track experience. That Márquez should be fastest is not that much of a surprise, but Jack Miller's fourth-fastest time is an impressive achievement, coming in part from being able to slide the bike around and steer with the rear. It made the Australian a happy man: "going sideways through the corner, I had a smile ear-to-ear and a happy look in both eyes," Miller joked to the media.

Scott Redding was lapping up the conditions as well. "The track is in quite bad condition, but I'm having fun," the Pramac Ducati man said. "I'm enjoying sliding a lot. It's a positive way to go." Redding ended the day as sixth fastest, ahead of Valentino Rossi and as fastest Ducati. After the disappointment of Qatar, this was just the tonic Redding needed.

Watching Moto 3 FP3 now, no rain. FP3 Moto GP in about 20min, should be a good one, can 99 get back on top or near the top, hell top 10 lol, im sure he will figure out his settings, same for Iannone. Otherwise it might be Q1 for both...

FP4 red-flagged. SR45's rear end broke apart on track. Matt seems to think it was the rear tire, but it looked to me like the hugger and seat disintegrated.

Red flag was very short, they've already been cleared to go back on track. Seems to be a good indication this isn't a Michelin problem.

Hmm, not good. Another red flag, but there are no riders down on track. Maybe it is a Michelin problem.

Gotta be honest, I don't think it's a tire problem. Every shot I've seen of Redding's rear shows an intact rear tire.

Well, after seeing a replay of them cleaning the track after the SR45 incident, they clearly pulled part of a tire carcass off the track.

Statement regarding the Argentina GP following team meeting

An extra Warm Up and a new rear tyre will be introduced on Sunday morning to avoid any issues with the Michelin rear.

Following the incident in Saturday’s FP4 at the Gran Premio Motul de la Republica Argentina at Termas de Rio Hondo involving Octo Pramac Yakhnich’s Scott Redding, during which the rear tyre suffered a failure on track, specific actions will be taken for Sunday’s race.

Redding’s tyre – a medium compound with seven laps on it – is still being examined by Michelin’s technicians to determine the cause of the fault. Until this can be determined, Michelin has decided to withdraw both rear tyres on safety grounds, and introduce the extra “special” rear compound brought for such an occasion. Each rider will have four of these rear tyres for Sunday.

The reason both current tyres must be withdrawn is because they are both of the same construction, meaning that there is a possibility of a similar failure on the harder tyre. Michelin’s new rear tyre to be introduced from Sunday is of a harder construction, and will cope better with the hard strains and temperatures put through it – albeit at the expense of lap times.

To help teams and riders adapt to this complicated situation, Race Direction has decided to add an additional 30-minute Warm Up session for MotoGP™ to the morning schedule at 9am. After this, the schedule will continue as previously planned. For this additional track time, all riders will have one additional front tyre added to their allocation.
