Moto GP 2016 Round 8 Assen ***SPOILER***

Finally the boys are back! Confirmed today all Full Factory Teams are set full details here MotoGP: A look at team lineups as Rins signs with Suzuki | Sport Rider

About the circuit

Assen is the only venue to have held a round of the Motorcycle World Championship every year since its creation in 1949. The circuit was purpose built for the Dutch TT in 1955, with previous events having been held on public roads. The track is narrow, with rapid changes in direction, and is fully surrounded by grass banks and grandstands, providing excellent viewing for the hundreds of thousands of fanatical spectators who are drawn to the most prestigious event in Dutch motorsport every year. A huge favourite with riders, Assen is well known for its festive and extravagant atmosphere.

In 1999 the circuit was modified with a new grandstand, control tower, press centre and renovated boxes. Modifications to the Assen circuit over the winter of 2005/6 saw the length of the championship’s longest serving track cut from over 6km down to 4.555km/2.83miles.

Yes!!! Assen is such a great track. Hopefully this race won't be decided by bad tire wear or mechanical issues.

A Saturday Race day at the TT of Assen has come to an end
"2016 Assen MotoGP Preview: Sunday Sees the End, and the Beginning, of an Era
Submitted by David Emmett on Thu, 2016-06-23 01:13
For Assen, this is a year for breaking with tradition. In 2016, for the first time in its history, the 86th edition of the Dutch TT at Assen will be run on Sunday rather than Saturday. It is the end of an era, but also the start of a new era.

The reason for the switch is simple: better exposure. "All of the major football games, all of the big sporting events are on Sunday. People expect to go to a big event on a Sunday," chairman of the circuit Arjan Bos told reporters last year. TV audiences expect major sports events to take place on a Sunday, and not a Saturday, as the viewing figures for Assen have repeatedly shown. On average, TV audiences are down by a significant amount compared to other MotoGP races.

The switch to Sunday is expected to generate between 5% and 10% more revenue for the TT circuit, the city of Assen and the surrounding region in the long term. The circuit is hoping to extend its contract by another five years, having it end in 2026 rather than 2021. Bigger crowds and more income over the long term will allow Assen to make some major upgrades in terms of spectator comfort and track safety."

Per the official website, the final turns have been slightly modified (quote from site below). Kerbs have been added which are the flat type which won't affect lean angle or cause crashes, just make it "annoying" for riders.

For safety reasons the final chicane has been altered, grass removed and extra tarmac added. Rossi doesn’t think the changes will detract from any last lap battles: “That chicane was a great place in the past, not just me and Marc but also Schwantz and Rainey, Capirossi one time beat me in the 250s. If there’s another tight last lap it’ll be interesting.”

More news concerning silly season - Bradl out at Aprilia, no word yet on Bautista. Aleix Espargaro has been officially confirmed for Aprilia, taking Bradl's ride, and Sam Lowes is under contract, but still no official statement on whether Lowes is getting Alvaro's seat.

From crash.net:

MotoGP Netherlands: Bradl: Aprilia not continuing with me...

Stefan Bradl has confirmed that he will not continue with Aprilia in 2016, adding that he is 'not looking around in only MotoGP' for prospective rides.*

Speaking on Thursday afternoon in the Assen paddock, the German explained how he came to understand of the news in Barcelona, and that he expected an imminent announcement that would confirm Aleix Espargaro's arrival in the squad for 2017.*

“I got the message that they are not continuing with me,” said the 26-year old. “Well, it's not a nice feeling for me right now. It's a pity because I feel at home here and very good, with the guys around. With the project I feel good.*

“But the company decided to go in a different way. We all know this paddock is a big business. In the end they decided to do this and life still goes on, the world is not going down. We're still working in the same way but there's a different feeling now.*

“Basically it was in Barcelona I got some messages. Not messages but you always hear the rumours that are around. There are a few rumours that you cannot believe. There are a few that you trust a little bit. I've been mixed up in it myself so I know where to settle myself and finally I got the message.”*

Bradl also added, “I know that Aleix Espargaro will announce this very, very soon,” as reports suggested the Catalan was due to mention a deal with Aprilia in the pre-event press conference on Thursday evening.*

However, the elder Espargaro's plans were impacted by an air strike in France, which severely delayed his trip to the Netherlands, meaning he was not present to make any such announcement.*

26-year old Espargaro denied that he has signed the contract on Twitter, saying “I've still not signed anything,” but several Spanish media outlets - including sports dailies*AS*and*Marca*- claim he was due to finalise his contract with Aprilia on Thursday before announcing the move in the press conference.*

Sources close to Aprilia expect his move to be confirmed at the beginning of next week.*

Asked where he would turn to for a ride in 2017, Bradl said that he was still unsure. “Actually, I don't know,” he continued. “I've just started to look around to see what the future can bring. I'm not looking around only in MotoGP. Like you say there are not so many good seats left. The Superbike is also an option but I hope I can find some guys to walk with. I'm sure also that something will come up.*

On whether staying in MotoGP was the priority, he added, “Not the priority. We'll see. It's too early to say something right now. It's still very fresh, that I got the message that Aprilia will go in a different way. Right now I'm ready to speak but it depends on how my feeling is. I cannot say something concrete now.”*

Current team-mate Alvaro Bautista was less clear on his future plans. While it is widely believed that only some minor details need to be clarified in Espargaro's deal, Bautista suggested that “anything can happen.”*

“Well, still the decision is not taken,” said the Spaniard. “Aprilia told me that they want me to remain in the team but they already signed a contract with Lowes. It's a difficult situation, no?*

“At the moment they are working to have me in the team. I'm just working for them and looking for other teams. I have to be prepared in case there is no more space for me here. In the end it's Aprilia's decision.*

“I started this project with Aprilia with a lot of motivation. Last year was a strange year because the bike was not a MotoGP bike, more a laboratory bike. It's like one year thrown into the bin. This year the bike arrived too late. We didn't have the time to try and improve it during the winter test, where it is easier to do so than a GP weekend.*

“I think we are making some small progress. The bike after seven races is more or less the same as in the first race in Qatar. Practically nothing changed. We'll see what happens but at the moment I can say that I made the bike. They made the bike with my comments and my requests.*

“I think it's 50/50,” was his reply when asked to rate his chances of remaining in Aprilia colours in 2017. “Now the situation is difficult. They want three riders but they only have two bikes. Also Lowes has a contract. In this world everything can happen!”*

Would staying in MotoGP remain his top priority?*

“Yeah, sure. This is my priority.”*

And with a Spanish team, with a satellite Ducati outfit rumoured to be interested? “It could be,” he added with a mischievous grin. “It's one option.”

Tomorrow should be interesting. I just looked at the weather forecast, and it's a 90% chance of rain, so there's a good bet it'll be a wet race. If so, I can see Redding, who did well in wet qualifying, scoring decent points (he hasn't scored any points since CoTA, I believe). Of course, VR46 is good in all conditions, so he could possibly stand to gain some serious ground in the championship. There were so many crashes in the wet during free practices and qualifying that the race is gonna be totally unpredictable.

In other news, MotoGP has announced a ban on winglets on the premier class starting next season. Winglets are already prohibited in Moto2 and Moto3.

What a fun race, flag to flag never dissappoints.

I was sceptical at first, but I guess the baby alien really has grown up?

Grats to Miller and Redding, both rode well composed!

Some history today, as Jack Miller takes a crazy race, becoming the first Aussie since Stoner in 2012 to win a MotoGP race. He also became the first non-factory rider to win a MotoGP race since 2006, when current MotoAmerica rider Toni Elias did it with Gresini.

Technically, this wasn't a flag-to-flag, it was a red-flag restart, but I get what you're saying.

MotoGP Assen - Race Results

Jack Miller has claimed a shock first MotoGP race win, and the first by a non-factory rider since 2006, during a restarted Dutch MotoGP round at Assen.*

The original race took place on a drying track, but was halted with 12 laps to go when torrential rain returned.*

The restart took place over 12 laps, which began with a flurry of falls for Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso (on pole for the restart) and then race leader Valentino Rossi.*

Miller than passed Marc Marquez for the lead and held off the double world champion to claim what was also the first MotoGP victory for the Marc VDS team.*

Andrea Iannone began last on the grid as punishment for taking out Jorge Lorenzo in Catalunya, but fell from fifth place putting him near the back again for restart, when he recovered back to fifth.*

Loris Baz was again absent due to his foot injuries at Mugello and replaced by Michele Pirro...*

Jack will probably never see a 1st place finish again, but he deserved it. Staying calm and focused with MM behind him had to have been tough. I loved the race, never a dull moment.

No worries Dave.

Nice to see 3 new winners across the classes today. I'm especially happy for Nakagami in Moto2 finally getting his first victory.
