Moto GP 2016 Round 10 Austria ***SPOILER***

Well here we go, on to the second half of the season. New Track for Moto GP. Marc certainly looking strong... How will Vale and Jorge respond... Excited to see things roll after a long break!!!

About the circuit
The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg is located beautifully in the Murtal-region of Styria, Austria. The circuit was originally built in 1969, then known as the Österreichring. In 1996 it was rebuilt with the track-layout it still has today and in 2011 it was reopened as the Red Bull Ring and again became the centre of Austrian motorsports. The sloping terrain and the natural arena are trademark features of the Red Bull Ring with the 18-metre-high landmark “Bull of Spielberg” in the centre and the voestalpine wing offering a spectacular architectural highlight. With a length of 4.318 km it features 10 turns and an altitude difference of 65 metres. The 2016 season will see the Red Bull Ring host its first MotoGP race as the World Championship returns to Austria for the first time since 1997.

I'm ready for the break to end. I know it happens every year, but this year it seems longer than usual to me. I'm looking forward to seeing this track in action.

Moto GP 2016 Round 10 Austria ***SPOILER***

I think part of it is the 3 week breaks between the last three races. We've only had 3 races over an almost 3 month period. Don't think that was like that last year, but too lazy to look it up.

Rossi: “We will do our best to get onto the podium”
The Movistar Yamaha rider gets ready to return to the Red Bull Ring.
Tags MotoGP, 2016, NEROGIARDINI MOTORRAD GRAND PRIX VON ÖSTERREICH, Valentino Rossi, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP, Preview
"Some of the races this year could have been better but we have proven that we're fast."
Valentino Rossi
Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) is only the second rider in the field to have raced at the Red Bull Ring – Spielberg before, although the 125 race in which the Italian participated – in 1996 – was on a different track layout to the new one seen today. The legendary Italian made good progress on the new layout during testing at the venue - after a more difficult start - and is aiming to further refine the YZF-M1 and get on the podium as the second half of the season kicks into gear. The training of the summer break is over, with the lights soon going out in Austria for the first time in 19 years.

Valentino Rossi: “It was a long break. I certainly rested a lot! I went on holiday but I continued to train. Now, however, I really want to get back on the track and do my best in this second half of the season. We have done good races up to this point. Some of them could have been better but we have proven that we‘re fast. The Austrian circuit is very nice and the tests went pretty well. The two long straights don‘t help us much, but during the race weekend we still have time to improve. We will do our best to get onto the podium.”

Iannone heads back to Austria after topping test
The Ducati team rider went quickest in the test at the Red Bull Ring and looks forward to going back to the venue.
Tags MotoGP, 2016, NEROGIARDINI MOTORRAD GRAND PRIX VON ÖSTERREICH, Andrea Iannone, Ducati Team, Preview
Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) topped the Ducati-dominated timesheets at the Red Bull Ring test in Spielberg, where most of the grid were in attendance – minus Repsol Honda Team pairing Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa. The layout of the new venue seems a positive one for the Desmosedici GP, and the Italian is eager to convert his test pace into a race result.

"The circuit is really nice and it adapts well to our Desmosedici GP."
Andrea Iannone
Andrea Iannone: “The Red Bull Ring is a new circuit for everyone but in the tests in July we immediately got to grips with the track and we were always the quickest out there. The circuit is really nice and it adapts well to our Desmosedici GP. On this track I established a good feeling with my bike right from the start and this is a very positive aspect in view of the race.”

Marquez reloaded and ready for the Red Bull Ring
The Repsol Honda rider is ready to defend his lead as MotoGP™ touches down in Austria.
Tags MotoGP, 2016, NEROGIARDINI MOTORRAD GRAND PRIX VON ÖSTERREICH, Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda Team, Preview
Summer is over, bikes are back on track soon and it’s catch me if you can for Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), who tops the standings in MotoGP™ as the paddock heads to the Austrian hills and the new layout of the Red Bull Ring – Spielberg. Those hills will most definitely be alive, with Marquez leading the charge over Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) by a substantial 48 point margin as the season passes the halfway marker ahead of the NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich. Following the summer break and some laps on the RC213V-S at the Austrian venue – although no testing onboard the GP machine - the Spaniard is ready for the next round as he tries to chase down his third premier class crown.

Marc Marquez: “The holidays have been very good because we started the summer break knowing we had worked as well as possible with my team and with Honda in the first part of the season. I had some time off, resting and relaxing with my friends on the beach. Anyway, a quite hectic and challenging second half of the season is about to begin, requiring our total concentration and a lot of hard work, so I also spent some time preparing myself with cycling and supermotard training. Now I really look forward to getting back to racing my bike and to riding again at the Red Bull Ring. I had the chance to enjoy this amazing track twice, even if I wasn't riding my factory bike and of course I couldn't push as much as I like. It’s a circuit that’s quite enjoyable; some things about it remind me of Austin in that you have to brake very hard and stop the bike and turn quickly, but then there’s the last part that’s faster. I think it’s a good track for the World Championship and I can’t wait to ride there with a MotoGP bike. When you approach a weekend at a new circuit, it’s different and you have to be able to adapt as quickly as possible. I’m also proud to race there because my fan club will join us with many Austrian fans. I’m sure we'll have a great weekend and hopefully sunny weather.”

MotoGP Austria: Lorenzo: 'The situation is difficult' 10 August 2016
"It's true that the situation is difficult because Marc is slightly ahead in the championship" - Jorge Lorenzo.
MotoGP Austria: Lorenzo: 'The situation is difficult'
Reigning triple MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo is certainly keeping a cool head after dropping 48-points from Marc Marquez.

The Yamaha star labelled the situation as 'difficult', but also described the Honda rider as being 'slightly ahead' as the second half of the season begins in Austria this weekend.

Confidence-sapping cold and wet weather left Lorenzo tenth in Holland, then 15th after multiple accidents in Germany. Combined with being wiped-out by Andrea Iannone in Catalunya, it means Lorenzo has slipped almost two race wins behind Marquez with nine to go.

"It's true that the situation is difficult because Marc is slightly ahead in the championship but we will do our best, as every year, to try and cut the distance," Lorenzo said. "We will keep fighting until the end of the championship!"

"I spent a few days' time on the Balearic Islands to relax but then I started to train again to get in the best shape to face the second half of the season."

Plenty of question marks surround this weekend, with Austria and the renamed Red Bull Ring last hosting a motorcycle grand prix back in 1997.

Lorenzo was sixth quickest at a recent private test, just a fraction from Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi, but the pair were almost one-second from the leading Ducati of Andrea Iannone.

"We are still far because Ducati, with new tyres, can take profit from all their acceleration and stability under braking. Let's see which tyres Michelin bring for the race," Lorenzo said.

Michelin confirmed on Tuesday that they have created two new rear tyres as a result of data from the test.

However, despite Ducati's speed, Lorenzo and Rossi (59 points from the top) can take heart from Marquez missing the test. Lorenzo also admitted it felt good to be personally back on form, despite a far from perfect flying lap.

"Yeah, much better," he said. "When the track is good and we don't have problems with grip I am competitive again, as we saw today. I didn't make a perfect lap time because I was very careful with the soft tyre and lost some tenths.

"But when there is grip on the track I feel like before - like at Le Mans, Mugello and all the other grands prix."

In terms of track safety, Lorenzo echoed the words of most riders in calling for some corners to be improved.

"There are three or four corners that we need to try to put more space. More safety. Especially in the rain, because you can lose the front and - with bad luck - go in the direction of the wall. In that area it will be difficult [to change] because there are a lot of mountains, but it should be done because for sure it is not the safest track in the championship."

Small change to turn 10, shrinking the width from 13 to 10m amid safety concerns.

FP1 Results Cold practice, glad everyone was ok.. and yes Turn 10 was modified, ill post a pic later of the change to it, which slows them down a tad into the turn, certainly lots of safety concerns with this track - more of an F1 track NOT moto gp....

Maverick Vinales leads the first official MotoGP track session in Austria since 1997.

The session was interrupted after Dani Pedrosa locked the front and fell from his Repsol Honda, his bike ending up on top of a tyre wall.

Stefan Bradl and Eugene Laverty also walked away from big falls.

Lap times were significantly slower than at the recent private test due to modifications at the final turn, revised Michelin rear tyres and very cold conditions (9 degrees air temperature) this morning.

Ducati test rider Michele Pirro has a wild-card entry this weekend...

1. Maverick Viñales ESP Team Suzuki Ecstar (GSX-RR) 1m 25.866s [Lap 16/19] 306km/h (Top Speed)

The cold temps probably had something to do with the crashes, but Bradl's and Pedrosa's crashes were just wtf. No wrongs by either rider, no warning, then sliding on the tarmac.

Barriers and air fences seem really close to the track to me, especially for such a fast track.

Ducati delivered their expected advantage as temperatures rose on Friday afternoon at the Austrian MotoGP.

Factory team-mates Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone exchanged the top spot at the end of the session, with morning leader Maverick Vinales best of the rest, 0.8s behind.

Aleix Espargaro went for checks on his hand after a heavy fall early in the session.

Austria is returning to the MotoGP calendar for the first time since 1997. The final corner has been modified since the recent test.

Just watched that, I thought Laverty was gonna do more than push him. He was definitely pissed about something.

Pedrosa in 19th, Marquez squeaks into the top 10 - the top Honda was Crutchlow in 5th. Even Rabat was faster than DP26. Unless Marquez is sandbagging, I don't expect much from Honda this weekend. Sunday is going to be very interesting. Factory Ducati is looking good to get their first win in approximately forever.

Re the Laverty incident: article here Laverty accuses Iannone of having "no respect for anybody" - NewsDog
Basically Laverty was on a hot lap and along comes Iannone behind him wanting him to move the F over ....
"He's got no respect for anybody," Laverty added. "I told him 'what the f**k, are you kidding me?'. He needs to have respect

That seems to be the biggest problem with the Michelin front. No margin for error. Ton of crashes where it just gives out.

Looks to be a good weekend for Ducati and a rough weekend for Honda. Yamahas put some good times in Q2 though so let's see if they can cut in to MM lead.

Exciting qualifying, with Red and Blue back and forth. Lorenzo held pole for a good bit, was pipped by Dovi with a couple minutes to go, and then at the end, VR46 went top for about 3 seconds before Iannone finally took pole, as was expected for Ducati. So it's Iannone, Rossi, and Dovizioso on the front row, with Lorenzo, Marquez, Vinales on second. Slight surprise that Laverty made it to Q2, maybe a bigger surprise that he was faster than Pedrosa, who qualified 12th.

Exciting Q2, Rossi spliting the Ducs wow, good job by Marc to get onto second row!! so glad he was ok and it wasnt a worse shoulder injury.. Will be a long race tomorrow 28 laps, not sure Marc can get on the podium, we will see.

FP3 Results:
Andrea Iannone replaced factory Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso at the top of the timesheets during Saturday morning practice for the Austrian MotoGP.

World championship leader Marc Marquez made swift progress up to third behind the factory Ducatis, but then suffered a heavy fall after almost clipping team-mate Dani Pedrosa under braking for Turn 3.

Marquez briefly dislocated his left shoulder and headed to the Clinica Mobile for treatment after returning to the pits.

Jack Miller and Cal Crutchlow had less serious spills at the end of the session.

Winglets are offering a significant anti-wheelie advantage this weekend and Ducati had a new design on its factory machines his morning. Aleix Espargaro was back on track after fracturing a finger on Friday.

Anybody know what happened with Fenati? The guy is a great talent, but he's a serious head case.

Predictions?

Maybe at the start of the race, since he's front row IA29 might actually get a good jump, but based on his recent starts, I could easily see him lose several spots right out of the gate. Dovi is pretty consistent with his starts, and VR46 is VR46. I could see Dovi taking an early lead, followed closely by VR46 in to turn 1, with JL99 ahead of Iannone. Wouldn't surprise me if MM93 blitzed all of them, either. However, once race pace kicks in during mid game racing, I think the Ducatis will rise to the top, and Red Bull Ring will get Ducati it's long-awaited victory, with Dovizioso taking the checkered flag.

I think we are going to see a great fight between VR and the Ducati's. There sectors that certainly favor the Ducati's which they will use to gain ground. It will be interesting to see how the Honda's fair.

So Stoner won another race 3 years after retiring? :P

I kid... Great ride from both the Andreas! Only second non-alien to win a race in normal dry conditions, is he?
