Moto GP 2017 Round 7 Catalunya ***SPOILER***

Great race in mugello, hopefully Dovi and Petr can keep up the pace, we lost Louis Salom here last year :( he wont be forgotten, Still hard to believe Nicky is also gone..... Hope to see the Repsols do well here, seems to be a yam race advantage, then Honda, then Ducati, this season has been an odd one indeed. tires playing a big role it would seem

About the circuit

In 1989, through the joint collaboration of the Catalan Autonomous Government, the Montmeló Town Council and the Royal Automobile Club of Catalunya (RACC), work began on giving one of Europe’s most beautiful cities a state of the art race track to match. The Circuit de Catalunya opened on the doorstep of Barcelona in September 1991 and welcomed its first international event that same month, hosting the Spanish F1 Grand Prix. It went on to host the European Motorcycle Grand Prix and in 1995 became home to the Gran Premio de Catalunya. Considered to be one of the best designed circuits of the recent era, the Circuito de Catalunya won the much coveted IRTA ‘Best Grand Prix’ trophy for 2001 and has a general admission capacity of 104,000 spectators.

Balance of power: can Viñales hold on home turf?
The lead is bigger than ever on the road to Barcelona - but the grid are looking to tip the scales back against the Championship leader
Tags MotoGP, 2017, GRAN PREMI MONSTER ENERGY DE CATALUNYA, #CatalanGP
After the natural beauty and perfect curves of the Autodromo del Mugello, the MotoGP™ World Championship now heads for another breathtaking part of Europe – the Mediterranean city of Barcelona, on the Catalonian coast. Art, history, culture, sun – and passion for speed. With so many on the grid hailing from the region and nation, it’s another jewel of the calendar – with the stakes high, and the balance of power tipped firmly in favour of a home hero as the paddock arrives.
“I’m thinking of the Championship.”

After another podium and having fought for the win at the Italian GP, points leader Maverick Viñales’ (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) current position may well leave him thinking of nothing else: the rider from Roses is now 26 points clear, and next up is another home race – and another big challenge.
The temptation to push for the win at home will be big, and Viñales will need to walk the line between glory and the long game. After having issues in Jerez that forced him more into damage limitation than attack mode, the Catalan GP could be the first we see of Viñales unleashed on home turf. And it’s always good to be ahead, but it’s certainly never easy.
So what of last year’s winner? Mugello may not have gone to plan for the number 46 after he had a motocross crash before his home race, but with a few more days to recover, Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) will be hoping to return the favour from the Italian GP and beat Viñales on his territory. A P4 was a good haul of points in the circumstances last time out, but the number 46 isn’t one to race for points – a win would be just what the ‘Doctor’ ordered.

Whilst Movistar Yamaha had a good weekend last time out, it was a tough Italian GP for key rivals the Repsol Honda Team. Marquez came home sixth after struggling with the front, and Pedrosa crashed out on the final lap. They will want that to change at their second home race of the year, with the stakes always higher at home and this year even more so: Marquez took a big hit of points in France, and Pedrosa in Italy. However, both men have good records at Montmelo - and winning ones. The goal for the factory Honda riders will be simple: tip the scales back towards them, and as far as possible.

Another man looking to tip the balance back in his favour will be Ducati Team’s Jorge Lorenzo. After a podium in Jerez for the ‘Spartan’ to follow his teammate’s rostrum finish in Qatar, Lorenzo will be pushing hard for a bigger bite of the points this time out, eager to add some more silverware following Andrea Dovizioso’s win at Mugello. The Catalan GP has always been good for the Mallorcan, much like Jerez, and Lorenzo was the fastest Ducati in the recent test there. And Dovizioso will certainly be buoyed by his win as the next race gets in gear so soon after, but is equally sure to keep his same mentality: start positive, and see what the weekend brings."

layout now permanent after the death of Salom
After some modifications were made during the 2016 Catalan GP following the tragic crash of Luis Salom in Moto2™ FP2 on Friday, permanent changes are to be applied to the layout of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for MotoGP™. The new layout has a slightly shorter track length of 4652m, with work set to take place in January.

By requirement of the FIM, layout will be changed in the following ways:

- Use of the F1 layout of Turn 10

- New chicane after Turn 13

This new chicane is BEFORE the chicane used for Formula 1.

Home stars Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo have topped the timesheets during Friday practice for the Catalunya MotoGP.

Cal Crutchlow was left down the order after a fall in the closing stages, with Alvaro Bautista, Hector Barbera and Loris Baz also tumbling this afternoon.

FP2 was the first fully dry MotoGP session of the weekend, after a damp morning.

The final chicane has been re-designed for this season's race with Ducati, Honda and Aprilia teams taking part in a private test at the track last month.

Sylvain Guintoli is again replacing injured rookie Alex Rins at Suzuki...

FP1 we saw Jack Miller not get the memo re the new track layout lol, he was black flagged.... well a lot of riders were upset with the new layout, so Moto GP have decided to revert back to last years layout ie F1 layout, it gave us some laughs seeing miller look around saying "what???" lol

"Following FP1 and FP2 at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, the decision has been taken to revert the track layout to the old chicane – the one used for Saturday and Sunday in 2016 – from FP3 onwards in 2017. The decision is based on feedback from riders following Day 1 of track action, and was taken by the Safety Commission on Friday evening.
The changes made to the layout ahead of the 2017 event were deemed insufficient due to the change in the asphalt of the chicane, which was the cause for concern for the majority of the riders.
The race weekend will therefore continue on Saturday using the layout raced in 2016.
Loris Capirossi: “In the Safety Commission the riders complained a little about the new layout, they said the work wasn’t done in the right way and there were a lot of bumps – that’s why the riders decided to go back to the layout from last year. That’s why we’re here, to make sure the track used tomorrow is the safest we can. We saw during practice today a lot of crashes too where the bike remained on the track and at the exit of the corner, and that’s very dangerous. We have experience from last year of the old chicane and we didn’t have any crashes like we did today, that’s why the riders requested it. In terms of crashes, the old one is better.”

Marc Marquez fastest as no Yamaha rider makes the top 10 during FP3 for the Catalunya MotoGP.

After spending Friday on the new-for-2017 chicane, MotoGP has switched back to the F1 design for the remainder of the weekend.

As a result, Friday's lap times were scrapped and the top ten positions, for direct access to the second and final part of this afternoon's qualifying session, were decided only on FP3.
The best lap times were set on soft rear tyres in the final 10 minutes of the session.

Honda, Ducati and Aprilia attended a private test at Catalunya last month. Yamaha, Suzuki and KTM did not...

awesome pole from Dani, Jorge getting it done in second and a great lap from Petrucci making the front row!! Poor Marc , jesus 4 crashes today, but he is ok and on the second row. Vin although making Q2 is hurting starting P9, just a terrible day for the Factory Yams..they are paying for not testing here earlier, or it wouldnt have made a diff who knows? grip issues, tomorrows race may be hotter.....

I drop in now and then just for this thread. Dovi ran a hell of a race, and MM didn't fall down! Not a great weekend for Team Yamaha.
