Hayden Re-Signs with HRC

http://www.crash.net/news_View~t~Hay...~id~137706.htm

I figured he was going to re-sign when I read that he would be testing the 800. HRC probably would not have let him ride the bike if they didn't think he was gonna be back next year. Good news for HRC and good news for Sete and Colin's job prospects =P. Sete might not be out of the woods yet though because Ducati is reportedly making a play for Melandri.

Here it is so you don't have to click the link:

Crash.net can reveal that MotoGP World Championship leader Nicky Hayden has signed a new deal to remain at the factory Repsol Honda team for the next two seasons.

The breaking news was delivered to Crash.net by Toby Moody, who also revealed that Hayden's new contract was only signed at 5.00pm local time, on Friday at the Japanese Grand Prix, after Hayden and Honda "met in the middle".

The American has been a Repsol Honda rider since his 2003 MotoGP debut, and is enjoying by far his most successful season - taking two wins from nine podiums and holding a 21 point championship lead over Valentino Rossi with three rounds to go - but there appeared to be some sort of delay in the #69 signing a new contract.

Hayden claimed he was simply concentrating on the championship, but rumours of rival offers from Yamaha (who tried to sign Hayden for 2003) and Ducati also surfaced. It was thought those rumours might simply be aimed at improving Honda's offer, but Hayden confirmed that he had "very serious" offers from other teams.

Hayden's new deal, which will see him remain alongside star rookie means he will now be able to ride Honda's mysterious new 800cc machine for the first time at Motegi on Monday.

It also improves countryman Colin Edwards' chances of retaining his factory Yamaha seat alongside Rossi, while Sete Gibernau will also feel more confident of keeping his factory Ducati ride next to Loris Capirossi.

More to follow...

I think this works out for him, especially for where he is as a growing rider in GP. I mean, being Hayden, would you want to be in the shadows of Rossi again? On the M1 or whatever 800 they're developing? I don't know how strong the Ducati team is and maybe the situation would be better riding behind Loris (he's the kind of guy I think would be supportive of Nicky and even teach him some things). But he won't get support like any other team like Honda does. They have the resources, the history and the money.

Friday September 22, 2006. Motegi Circuit, Japan

NICKY HAYDEN RE-SIGNS WITH THE REPSOL HONDA TEAM

Nicky Hayden will continue to ride for the Repsol Honda Team in MotoGP next season having signed a new two-year deal with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) at the Grand Prix of Japan. The talented 25-year-old American, who leads the riders’ world championship, put pen to paper at the Motegi circuit today to extend a partnership with the factory Honda team that began in his rookie season in 2003.

The agreement ensures Repsol Honda retains its strong rider line-up for next year, with Hayden once again joined in the garage by young Spaniard Dani Pedrosa. Today’s announcement also guarantees important stability as MotoGP enters an exciting new era with the new 800cc rules coming into effect
in 2007.

Nicky Hayden
“It’s an honour to be with the HRC factory team for another two years in MotoGP – it doesn’t get a lot better than that – so I’m really excited and really happy. Everything came together and I’m happy with the deal and I’m happy with HRC. I feel like I took a big step forward this year and I feel that I’m still climbing up the learning curve so I don’t want change anything. I want to keep learning, continue growing and keep this momentum going into next year. I’m really happy with the team around me, we’re all clicking and working well together. I’ve been a Honda guy for quite a few years and they’re the ones who brought me over to MotoGP – and now I just want to repay them with the championship.”

Tsutomu Ishii – HRC General Manager
“Honda and HRC are very pleased that Nicky will remain with the Repsol Honda Team for two more years. Nicky has been with us for four seasons and during that time he has evolved and continually improved. His results this year have been excellent and he has led the world championship for much of the season. The feeling within the team is very strong at the moment and this season Nicky and Dani Pedrosa have established a positive relationship. As MotoGP enters the new 800cc era it is important for the Repsol Honda Team to enjoy this stability, not only with the rider line-up but also with our sponsors and partners.”

Happy to hear this. Nicky worked hard all year (actually quite a few years), and it's nice to see that HRC is recognizing and rewarding his efforts. I believe with his good work ethic and attitide, things will only be looking better for the Kentucky Kid in the years to come.

It seems like a win win situation for both Nicky and HRC. If HRC waited till he won the championship then Nicky would have asked for a lot more $. If Nicky lost the championship then HRC could have dropped their figure. Also, two years is a good thing because it assures Nicky that he will be on the bike after the first year of development. HRC could have 3 years of championship if Nicky keeps it up.
