MotoGP news...

Gresini keeps Melandri.

Reports from Europe indicate that Fausto Gresini has succeeded in re-signing triple 2006 MotoGP race winner Marco Melandri for the 2007 season.

Melandri had been targeted by the factory Ducati team to ride alongside fellow Italian Loris Capirossi, but Gresini matched Ducati's 3 million Euro offer - thus keeping the 24-year-old on a Honda - despite the fact that current title sponsor Fortuna is expected to leave at the end of the season.

It is not known if HRC intervened to prevent Melandri from defecting, but the promise of a factory 800cc machine - run by Gresini - could well have clinched the deal. Other rumours suggest that Melandri will ride with Bridgestone instead of Michelin tyres next season.

Melandri is currently third in the MotoGP World Championship standings, despite being hospitalised - along with Capirossi and Ducati team-mate Sete Gibernau - following a turn one accident at Catalunya. With Melandri re-signing, Gibernau's position alongside Capirossi now looks more secure.
Had Melandri moved to Ducati, Gibernau was being linked with Kawasaki - which could in turn lose Shinya Nakano to Konica Minolta Honda.

Meanwhile, the occupant of the second Gresini seat remains unknown - with Fortuna favourite Toni Elias expected to leave, possibly for a d'Antin Ducati ride (with which fellow Spaniard Carlos Checa, currently of Tech 3 Yamaha, is also being linked). BSB star Leon Haslam is known to have held discussions with Gresini over a possible 2007 ride.

The Ducati Marlboro Team still doesn't know when the identity of its second rider for the 2007 MotoGP season will be announced.

The fight for the final factory Desmosedici seat, alongside Loris Capirossi, now looks to be a straight contest between its existing occupant, Sete Gibernau, and Fortuna Honda's triple 2006 race winner Marco Melandri.

Gibernau looked likely to retain his ride as the three flyaway races began, but a combination of Melandri's Phillip Island victory, Nicky Hayden's decision to re-sign for the factory Repsol Honda Team and Gibernau's continued podium absence seems to have increased Ducati's options.

Hayden's new two-year deal alongside Dani Pedrosa means that Melandri is at least several seasons away from a full factory Honda seat, prompting him to consider alternatives. From Ducati's point of view, as well as his proven race-winning ability (and Italian nationality), Melandri is only 24-years-old - nine years younger than both Capirossi and Gibernau (33) - meaning that he would be perfectly placed to inherit Capirossi's unofficial number one role in the near future.
Nevertheless, the fact that Ducati let the experienced Gibernau ride the new 800cc Desmosedici GP7 during testing after Motegi - and that he set such a fast pace - means the Spaniard is far from out of the picture.

In theory, Melandri could also be in contention for the second factory Yamaha ride alongside Valentino Rossi. The ride had been lined up for Hayden, but the American's sudden Honda deal has left countryman Colin Edwards confident of keeping his seat.

Ha ha, not after yesterday... anyway...

Despite Nicky Hayden's decision to re-sign with Honda, the factory Yamaha team has politely declined to comment on whether Colin Edwards is now likely to remain alongside Valentino Rossi in 2007 - or if Camel will stay for a second season as title sponsor.

If the Ilmore bike is competitive Barros should show some good results. I really thought he'd be on the Ten Kate ride next to Toseland. Really, I'd rather see Barros back in GP and Sebastian Charpentier next to Toseland. That would leave a SS spot open next to Sofuoglu....

PS: Sebastian has some kind of luck, eh?

If i was Alex,i would much rather take my chances on the 1000 rather than team green.

It takes them way to long to get a bike that will compete with Honda and being this is a all new bike............

Why do the vendors want us to buy there stuff when they never have it in stock?

I dunno man, team Green and Suzuki seem to be developing slowly but surely, and i think the Kawis actually have the speed to make it to a podium finish

Yeah but if you read th ebottom youll see where i quoted it and said, its not happeneing, the stories came from sources which were a few days apart. Either way im dropping news on ya.

if Melandri does switch to Bridgestone tires next year it would be a bad move b'coz he'll be back to square one on those tires, better race with the brand you know & gotten used to as he won some races using the good old Michelins.

true story ^ but im still switching to Michelin on my next bike, even tho i rolled on Metzlers the whole time i had my Darkniss

It hasn't stopped Capirossi from winning races this year. Bridgestone has come a long way in their development.

The reason the Suzukis aren't finishing up there is because they haven't figured out how to stop their bikes from tearing up tires. Ducati apparently has. Well, at least in Capirossi's case.

I thought the Suzuki's couldnt catch em on the straights and then got left on everyone and then they had to catch em in the corner and thats why they tear up tires.

Suzuki's problem,according to Hopkins,is the traction control or lack of.He said it's never worked very well untill this year.That's why he had so many DNF's untill now.

Next year is going to be a whole new ballgame though and I can't wait to see who got it right from the start.

that may be true, but theyve always been having trouble on the straights, look at the races where he does get up front, he gets eaten up on the first straight away...
