2008 MotoGP Season Begins -- Sepang Test

The 2008 MotoGP pre-season testing begins on the Sepang circuit. Topping the sheets is Randy dePuniet, who showed he could turn great times last year on the LCR at this circuit. RdP is still running the 2007-spec engine (only the Repsol team is running the pneumatic valved RC). Dani Pedrosa also showed up on the business end of the timesheets, but not without two crashes, the last of which was spectacular and sent him home, to Barcelona, with a confirmed broken hand. Nicky Hayden, in 8th, did the most laps on the new RC212V putting in 85 laps! Lorenzo rounded out the top 10, also involved in a crash incident in testing.

Here are the times:

Nicky Hayden ran the pneumatic valved engine today and cut 0.4 seconds off his best time on the conventional valved engine. He's still teetering around 10th place because the bike is about as slow as it was back in the first test. Also, he's running on a reference tire compared to others who are doing tire tests. Just for an idea of how fast Nicky has run in Sepang, he did a 2min 0.5 the first time around.

Lorenzo tried out the pneumatic valved engine this go around too. He cut about a second off his best time with it in. The engine braking is different on this engine than the conventional.

Edwards is using a hybrid M1. It has a new chassis in it, but the engine is still the conventional one.

It's funny how the conventional engines and 2007 bikes are running better than the 2008 pneumatics. However, time will tell. I agree with Hayden and Rossi who've said that pneumatics are the future.

Stoner was dealing with electronic gremlins all afternoon.

Here are day 2 times:

The three-day test marks the debut of the 2008 Yamaha YZR-M1 and the return of world champion Casey Stoner from a shoulder injury sustained at Jerez last November.

Of the provisional 2008 grid, only Team Roberts are not attending the test, while Dani Pedrosa has returned to Spain after injuring his hand on day one.

4. Jorge Lorenzo SPA Fiat Yamaha Team (M) 2min 1.583 secs

Here's the Repsol Honda report from the Repsol Team Official Report:

Quote:
Day 2 : -

Repsol Honda's Hayden improves pace at Sepang.

Nicky Hayden continued his sterling work at Sepang today, once again riding more laps than anyone else at the Malaysian circuit. In gruelling tropical heat (ambient 35 degrees, track 51 degrees) the Repsol Honda rider rode 66 laps, cutting more than four tenths off his previous best time from yesterday. Hayden spent most of the day evaluating HRC’s latest RC212V engine with pneumatic valves, having spent yesterday using an engine with conventional valves.

The 2006 MotoGP World Champion was Repsol Honda’s lone rider today, his team-mate Dani Pedrosa is in Barcelona, Spain, awaiting surgery. The Spaniard broke a bone in his right hand when he fell here yesterday afternoon. Dr Xavier Mir at the Clinica Dexeus is expected to operate on the injury this afternoon. It is not yet known when Pedrosa will be able to ride
again.

Nicky Hayden, fastest lap: 2m 02.102s (lap 24 of 66)
“We used the standard engine in the morning. I set my fastest lap, then we started using the pneumatic-valve engine after about 25 laps. With that engine the bike did feel more like the prototype I rode last November, I guess because the bike was designed to have that engine, so maybe the extra weight makes it work a bit better. We did have a few little issues with the engine, it’s got smoother power and more rpm but top speed is a bit down, plus I was coming in every 12 laps to check the system so it wasn’t so easy to get into a rhythm. But I think the pneumatic valves are the way to go because that engine’s got more potential. We also tested a clutch with the pneumatic valve engine, plus some setting parts and fuel injection, more engine type of stuff. We stayed on race tyres all day and made a little bit of progress, four tenths or so. We also tested a couple of tyres, I tried a 16 rear but the balance of the bike wasn’t right with that tyre, so we need to look at the data and see what’s happening. Now we’re going to sit down, talk about it and see which engine we’re going to use tomorrow.”

yeah, looks like Bridgestone and the Factory Yamaha are a PERFECT marriage.

BWAHHAHAAHAHAH....Meanwhile the Honda/Michelin boys are kicking ass. Jerez testing was 1. Dani, 2. Hayden.

Then Sepang test day 1, Dani was fast again. And Test day 2 at Sepang, Nicky's time was better with the Pneumatic valve 212V, which means it ALREADY has more potential than the previous engine, PLUS they have a new clutch with the new engine...which hopefully makes Hayden's starts more consistent.

hayden regularly puts in more laps then any other rider during testing. he is used to having to do all the testing because dani is hurt or takes vacation instead of going to the track. i still dont know why there are some people that hate hayden so much. seems like a pretty stand up guy.

Remember that Hayden has been using a "reference" tire for the past two days. Basically, in scientific terms, it's a "control." So that whatever findings they have, they know it's not because of the tire. Whereas the satellite Honda is already proven, so RdP is just sorting out settings and tires.

As far as M1/Bridgestone combo = crash. Lorenzo also had a get off, so M1/Michelin = crash. Pedrosa had his fiery get off too, so 212/Michelin = crash. Just so we also get our facts straight, Rossi had his get off on the out lap, so the tire was cold. I bet you he was seeing how fast he could go on the out lap. Rossi is setting himself up by stacking the deck in his favor.

Rossi's bike doesn't have a number on the tail either. I'm assuming MotoGP no longer requires rear numbers because the bike's tail section's are getting smaller and smaller. It also looks like some sponsor name where the numbers used to be. Can't read what it says from that angle.

Nicky set a SCORCHING lap time at Sepang on the last day of testing over 0.2 seconds FASTER than the RECORD POLE position. Nicky Hayden leapt to the top on the final day thanks to a qualifying tire. Fellow American Colin Edwards was the fastest rider on a race tire.

According to sources, he set that time on the pneumatic valved engine. The fastest Sepang time the first go round was ALSO set by Nicky on the pneumatic engine of 2'0.529. The 2007 pole position was set by Dani with a 2'1.877. Nicky ran a race simulation and did a small run out of qualifiers putting in 77 laps total. The guy is serious about his bid'ness.

Hard to say, especially since Lorenzo ran a qualifier tire. So, if Rossi was on race tires, I wouldn't put it over him. What would be more of a burn is that Colin Edwards is putting his M1 ahead of Rossi. At the same time however, Rossi is running the pneumatic engine, which is not where it needs to be right now. Yamaha and Honda are having sort of the same problems.
