Hayden's 8th isn't as bad as you'd think. He's been using a reference tire for all 107 laps of data gathering on day 1. Wait until tomorrow when they work on testing tires. You'll see his times improve.

You have to take into account that Nicky was also 8th in Sepang on day 1 but jumped to 1st by the last day! If they get his bike working for him and the tires figured out it should be a great year for him.....won't be for lack of testing that's for sure, he's been running crazy amounts of laps! Also good to see Toseland right up there with the front runners.....shaping up to be an exciting year!!

remember that the new engine isn't necessarily there for more power. it's there because 1. the new chassis was supposedly designed for it, 2. the new engine is supposed to make the bike HANDLE better.

so what it isn't making tons of power...it has other benefits (thus untapped).

hayden should be top 3 on qualifier rubber.

I dunno bro, I hope it makes more power or close to the Ducati. Remember the opener last year? Straight end speed on some of the circuits is not achievable if you don't have adequate power. I have faith honda will get it right.

First race is March 9th, 2008. QATAR

Its a night race. Its gonna be sick. You can watch coverage, usually not live, on SPEED Channel. Or, if you want to get in depth coverage of practice sessions, qualifying and the actual race head on over to M0T0GP.com. The only catch is that you have to pay for a subscription.

PI Day 2 (RAIN)

Hopkins had a tumble in the rain that caused a groin injury. He went to the medical center and later the local hospital to get a proper scan to see the extent the injury. His involvement in the last day of testing has not been ruled out as of yet.

In other news, Hayden takes the high-road, refusing to comment on Dani being "a little bit worried" about Hayden carrying the development role for the new bike. Hayden quoted saying, "I'm doing my own thing," added, "With Dani not here I'm just focusing on my own thing, we're completely different riders, so I've got to keep working on my own stuff," said Hayden, the 2006 world champion, after the first day of testing at Phillip Island.

"The big difference right now is that I've got more engineers working with me, because usually they have to split their time and focus on the both of us. I'm pretty lucky right now to have all the engineers focusing on me," concluded the American.

Well, they said he tore 50% of the attachment of the ADDUCTOR muscle (he was quoted as saying the "abductor") to the bone. It's a pretty debilitating injury that sources say will require Dr. Ting's magical touch. He seems to fix up athletes more miraculous returns. He certainly won't be able to do anything that will require him to squeeze his legs together i.e. gripping a tank on hard braking, etc.

From Crash.net (LINK)

MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner completed a dominant test with a record-breaking qualifying lap almost one second clear of Nicky Hayden, on a day when most riders used soft rubber to set their best lap times.

The test was attended by the majority of teams and riders - with the notable exceptions of Fiat Yamaha and Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa (injured). Kawasaki's John Hopkins was also absent on the final day, having injured his groin on Thursday.

Both Pedrosa and Hopkins hope to return to action at the Jerez IRTA test from February 16-18. Fiat Yamaha will be back on track at Sepang from February 5-7.

Other Information:
  • The fastest ever lap before today was on a 990cc set by Nicky Hayden (1'29.02)
  • Stoner's flying lap was the only lap over the 1'30 mark on the third day (IOW, he kept all of his laps in the low 1'30s)
  • Toseland's best lap during the race simulation was a 1'31.02, about .2 seconds slower than Rossi's fastest in October

Commentary from the Riders after Friday:

Nicky Hayden, fastest lap: 1m 29.734s (lap 71 of 102)

“We ended up not too bad but it'd be nicer to be faster on race tyres. To be honest, it's been a frustrating couple of days here. We got into the 31s about the fourth exit from the pits on the first day and really we haven't been able to go any faster since then, except with the qualifiers, which were good. We've chased our tail a bit and I haven't really found a batch of race tyres I like. I struggled a lot when I was here for last year's race, but I did find something I liked. I didn't have that option this week, so I can't say I'm completely happy with the combination of bike, rider and tyres. We tried the pneumatic-valve engine and the conventional spec engine in the new chassis at this test. We did a lot of tyre testing with Michelin using the conventional engine.

The chassis did some good stuff but not enough through this fast stuff here. We left Sepang last wee k in a positive way and it's still early days, there's a lot of work still to be done. Now we go back to Sepang for two days, we've got a few days off and then keep trying to chip away at it."

Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro Team), best time: 1:28.777 (51 laps)

"We did the race simulation with one of Bridgestone's new tyres and it went really well, even though we had to come in three laps early. The track temperature today was actually higher than it was for the race here and you could tell. Even so we managed to lap consistently in low 1.30 and that shows how well they're working in Japan. I'm also really happy with the qualifying tyre, which is the same as last year. It is a good thing that bike is not completely different to 2007 because it has allowed is to find an excellent base to start the season from already. The new version of the engine has a better delivery, especially at the bottom end, and that has allowed me to set fast times more consistently, as well as increasing tyre life. It has been a good test session but now I'm happy to have a couple of weeks to rest and train in the gym. The shoulder feels okay, it is just a little bit weak and sore because I haven't been able to work on it as much as I would have wanted but now we can do that."

Another 100+ laps for Hayden... that's incredible. If I did 100 laps/day for 3 days straight, I would fall over and die.

Further info on James Toseland's performance at the test

"I'm really happy. I was always looking forward to coming here with my track knowledge and its nice to see the difference where I stand in the order with that experience," smiled James. "To be at the sharp end of the times and see my name up there has put a bigger smile on my face. Most importantly it earns respect from everyone concerned with MotoGP.

"Knowing the track, I can be on the same line each lap and that's helped me relay my feedback on the bike a lot more precisely to my team. On other tracks I've been finding my way round as well as trying to make a lap time," he added.

Toseland also gained more crucial experience by completing his first full race simulation. The #52 lapped consistently in the 1min 31secs bracket during his 27-lap run, as he assessed new front and rear suspension settings and a revised electronics set-up in full race conditions.

His best lap on race tyres today was a 1min 31.012secs, just 0.2secs slower than fellow M1 rider Valentino Rossi's fastest lap during last October's race.

"I was happy with my pace in the race simulation but those extra five or six laps over what I've been used to in Superbike were a bit strange," he admitted. "My body just isn't used to that distance but I felt good and wasn't too tired at the end. It is all good experience and it's all coming together nicely.

"I will sleep well tonight on the plane after this performance. Even one of my mechanics said that it is so good to see an English rider at that end of the timesheets rather than at the other end. And the best thing is I can only get faster and stronger.

"I'm still waiting for some new parts from Yamaha, so there is still plenty of room for improvement, also from Michelin. Everybody is working hard and I'm riding on a wave at the moment," concluded Toseland.

Great test for him

The way they are extracting power from these 800s these days, it's only a matter of time. As Hayden said once: They made them smaller so they'd be slower, but they're quicker in the corners than the 990s. Crashes usually happen in the corners, not down the straights. It doesn't make a lot of sense other than Honda wanted to change it to dominate it.

Hopefully this season does not turn out to be like last year, i.e chasing for 2nd place.

Good showing by James for sure, hopefully he can show some good pace at tracks he is not familiar with. Sucks to hear what happened to John Hopkins though.

I hope this year it is a good battle for the top spots. Also I wish to see everyone beat the crap out of Vale, including Lorenzo who I dislike with a passion. The GOAT has lost his sportsmanship and turned into Cry Baby Biaggi.

I don't think it'll be a race for second in MotoGP, maybe in WSBK (Haga should dominate), but not in GP.
