Testing Continues: Sepang III

Rossi returned to the top of the time sheets on the first day of testing at Sepang. This is the second Sepang test for 2008, third since the 2007 ended. A recorded time of 2'00.3 was done on the Bridgestone qualifier. The time was .026 seconds faster than Nicky's fastest at Sepang II, when Nicky left on top.

Nicky Hayden did a 2'01.9, which is a few tenths slower than his best time on race tires (2'01.6). He did end today's session with a crash, but fully expects to be back for tomorrow's testing. He put in 80 laps of testing today. He will continue to test the pneumatic and conventional engine tomorrow in hopes of shaping up the package for 2008.

Lorenzo was fastest this morning, but after Rossi and Hayden put in scorching laps, Lorenzo finds himself behind Nakano with a 2'02.65.

Here are all the times and laps:

at what point will honda focus on one motor? i obviously dont know how the "behind the scenes" stuff goes, but with just over a month until the first race it would seem best to pick one or the other and go full bore tuning on one. im sure development could still continue on the other with test riders and such, but it worries me that at every practice nicky is being asked to ride and test 2 different motors.

but what the hell do i know. im just a dumb lay person.

Well, that's what they're doing. By avoiding tire testing, and running both motors, it gives Honda data from both motors allowing them to get the data they need to improve the PV motor. The hope is to run the PV motor, because the conventional motor will just be a hopped up version of the 2007 season ending motor that's going to the satellite teams. Honda would looks silly to bring out a new bike but used a mildly evolved 07 motor. Honda's hope is to run the PV, although time's running out. They have the Jerez test as well as the Qatar test to go. So, there's still time.

Hayden:
"We got a late start because the track was not in good shape after the overnight rain. Nobody was in a hurry to go out. When we did we all went together and cleaned up the track a little," explained the American.

"We ran comparison chassis tests and confirmed what we learned at Phillip Island. The guys changed the geometry a little on the 2008 chassis and the bike had a better balance so we made some progress there.

"Michelin gave me a couple of rear tyres I really liked, one 16 inch and one 16.5 both have good grip on the edge of the tyre and the bike felt a lot better! We will keep on working on the chassis tomorrow and test more tyres," he added.

Rossi:
"Today was a good day of work," declared Rossi, whose best race-tyre lap was half a second clear of Hayden. "We started well this morning and made a good step this afternoon. The biggest improvement was found by working on the front tyre. We fixed a lot of vibration which had given me a problem at the first test, so we were able to go very fast on the race tyre.

"Last time we were here we worked just on the tyres. We did a base setting then worked on the tyre, because it was the beginning. Now we have clear ideas so we've started working on the bike. We've modified the balance, the setting, the stiffness - more up, more down - and we have some positive feeling.

"I am also better than last time we were here," confirmed the former five-times
MotoGP world champion. "I had to stop training for a month [due to his fractured hand, sustained at the Valencia season finale] so I was not at the maximum before. This time I am in a better shape, because I have been able to train."

"The [pneumatic] engine is the same spec as last time," he confirmed. "It is already a little bit faster than last year's engine and we are waiting for some new parts to arrive in time for the first race. The pneumatic-valve engine also helps in acceleration; it is a little bit easier to ride. It has a lot of potential."

The two former world champs are trading blows down in Malaysia. This morning, Nicky Hayden showed he was clearly unaffected by the small crash he had yesterday. On a qualifying tire, he put down a scorcher of a lap, cycling the three and a half mile circuit doing a 2'00.9, already putting in 36 laps before lunch, to top the time sheets. Rossi had already done a 2'01 before lunch, but came back out to lay down a 2'00.472, over a tenth slower than his blistering lap yesterday. This lap was undertaken on the Bridgestone qualifier with which he has been stepping up development.

Nicky has been known to test both engines during the tests, but only the conventional valved engine has been used of late in the Sepang III tests. The all-new motor is expected to arrive in time for the official test in Jerez, when the satellite Honda teams will also be receiving their new engines (the final spec factory engines from the end of the 2007 season).
