Hi Guys,

Ive spent the past 2 weeks trying to ajdust/increase the rear preload on my 07 CBR

So far Ive tried 4 different methods both on and off a rear stand.

1) Spanner from a SV650 tool kit - Slips when you give it some good pressure

2) Progressive SW-1700 Adjustable Spanner - Cant get the dang thing to catch, the swingarm seems to get in the way

3) Oil Filter Pliers + 1ft pipe - Grips but slips after a quarter turn

4) Flathead with a hammer - Seems to do more damage than anything

At this point not sure what I can do. Anyhelp would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks,
Jim

The rear shock is nearly impossible to adjust. I bent the handle on my spanner (same one as above) trying to get it to turn.

I ended up buying a piece of brass stock from the hardware store and using that in place of the screwdriver so I didnt damage the collar.

Ugh. I know. I was able to find a place to sent my suspension here from someone on the PNW forums. Im going to have them set it this Saturday. Thanks everyone for the help.

My advice: If you can get a shop to do it locally for under $50 do it.

I spent about $70 in tools and didn't move it one notch...

i used an Ohlins spanner wrench & it did the job, the edge didn't strip, the thing is made of good steel.

Even if you find a tool that won't slip, there is still a good chance the whole preload assembly will slip in it's own attachment, because it's poorly designed. If you can get the weight off the rear link, removing the shock from the bike for adjustment only takes about 10min.

Here is what I did after bending a small tool, I bought one of those beefy ones. It was too thick to fit in the slots so I took it to the bench grinder. The first two setting were hard as **** and after that nearly impossible. So I squirted some PB blast on the contact points and it made it a little easier. Then I got my buddy to lift up the rear but not off my stand and it was waaaaaaaaaay easier.

yeah, getting weight off the spring is key, if you dont have a friend around, i usually get the tool in secure, then turn it with one hand and lift up on the bike with the other hand, if you don't have it on a stand you have to make sure you are lifting in a way that wont push it over the other way or move it forward and drop the kickstand.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I ended up going to a suspension shop and had him set it for me. He had a spanner that be bent we were able to move it 3 notches before the nipple on the spanner stoped catching. We ended up taking the spring out and he had a special clamp and ajusted it from there.

Its now set and its a night and day difference. Im glad its all over!
