Rear Stand/Oil Level

Probably dumb questions, but here it goes anyway;

With the bike on a rear stand, can you check the oil level? In other words, is the sight glass centered in oil pan so that it will read correctly (just at an angle) or does it drain/fill up from the oil being more foward?

When solo, what technique do you use to get the bike on and off the rear stand safely?

Thanks,

Derek

it's best that you fill it up with the specified amount of oil according to the manual or at the sticker on the side cover when you change oil & then put it on a bikestand & see where the oil level is at & that's where you fill up next time you do an oil change on the bikestand.

getting the bike off the stand by your lonesome i first kick down the side stand & with my left arm i pull the bike (at the rear seat) slightly towards left & lift up the bike stand handle at the same time so when it's off the stand the bike automatically fall to the left where the sidestand takes over.

Cool, thanks for the reply. That is what I figured for getting the bike off the rear stand, that and have it in 1st so that it doesn't roll forward off the side stand.

I was hoping there was a way to check the oil level on the rear stand. Holding the bike semi-level while almost laying on the floor to check it sucks.

Hook, Make sure you warm the bike to normal running temp, shut the bike off and wait a few minutes, THEN check the oil level. If you check it cold you'll be low on oil when the bike warms up.

As far as checking the oil level by yourself, just grab the right clip-on and front brake lever with your left hand and use your left elbow against the tank to steady the bike.

On is sketchy. I balance the bike without a kick stand from behind and then set up the rear stand and get it on.

To get it off I keep the side stand up, block the rear stand's wheel with my right foot so it doesnt roll forward, and then push the bike off the stand.

There's an easier way to get it on the rear stand. Try leaving the bike on the side-stand and put the left side of the stand under the swingarm but have it crooked to the right side (Not square to the bike). The left wheel of the rear stand will be closer to your rear tire then the right wheel. Vary the amount of angle until you get it.

As you stand the bike up straight hold slight pressure on the rear stand. You'll notice that the rear stand squares itself to the bike as you stand it up. Then just hold pressure on the rear stand and the rear seat and push/pull it up.

It's harder to explain then it is to actually do. It's also a good idea to leave your side-stand down at all times so you don't forget and drop the bike getting it off the rear stand.

Thanks for the replies, I would really hate to drop it putting it on or taking it off the rear stand.

i do it that way also.....

+1 on leaving the side stand down....my friend recently had his bike come off the stands (standard style, not spooled). he started the bike, left for not even a minute, the bike vibrated off the stand and he found his bike on its side. broke his left mirror, snapped the rearset off and rashed his left fairing. he probably didnt have it properly mounted, but needless to say.....if the stand were down....it would be a different story.
