Is key-code stored anywhere else besides that tag?
I need to get new keys made for my '07 and don't have that tag.
The one key I have is pretty worn, so don't want to make copy of that.

The specialized guys can cut you a key just from the barrel ( I used the ignition), no spare needed.. I found a guy in Warsaw on ebay some 9 years ago, he also did the immobilizer pairing paid like 700 bux with two way shipping, but I guess u don't need that for US bikes
Answering my own question...

YES, key-code is written on ignition-switch on surface that faces back towards frame (with locking pin). Some people say if you turn steering all way to left and look from right side, you can see it. But I couldn't.

Easiest to just remove ignition-switch:
  • remove front fairing
  • remove headlights
  • remove fairing-stay/headlight bracket
  • remove air tunnel
  • remove ignition-switch cover
  • remove ignition-switch security bolts ( I used torx bit on one side and allen on other, angle them slightly so they dig into sides). Use regular bolts to re-install. No thief's gonna waste time removing all the above to disassemble ignition-switch. They'll just force it with screwdriver or pick up bike and toss into truck!

Clean off switch and you'll see 6-digit number. Last 3-digits is key-code

I ordered brand-new keys from this outfit by sending in key-code. About 4-5 days later, I got brand-new key that worked perfectly on all locks for $14!!!

Certainly '07-12.
If anyone has info on other years, please chime in! :)
