Is the typical sportbike "whine" caused by straight cut transmission gears?

Ever notice that acceleration whine you hear with a sportbike? Is this due to them having straight cut transmission gears as opposed to the quiet helical cut gears for automotive use?

Is it also true that straight cut gears are stronger, and allow for more efficient power transfer than helical gears?

Yes, the noise you hear is from the straight cut gears in your transmission. Some race cars are far more exaggerated as seen in this video.
. Ram air has a sucking noise and not much of a whining noise. They are easy to tell apart. My old cbr 600 f2 you could hear the air sucking in the ducts and it almost sounded turbo charged. Often reverse gears in street cars are all straight car gears, which is why it makes that whining sound. formula f1 cars also use straight cut gears as well. straight cut gears are more efficient while applying more directional and forward applications of force. They are able to withstand more force given without much loss of power as opposed to helical cut gearing.

For the record it sounds like that videos noise is being cause by the rear diff gears and not the transmission at least it didn't seem to change in pitch with rpm or gear selection just with speed increase

Both cars are using straight cut gears. It's no kidding how loud the transmission can be (louder than the engine) on different race cars. I saw a video of a Porsche in which the only noise you could hear was the transmission noise inside the car.

I was curious about the Triple 675 whine too, I did research on that back in August after hearing one, and the owner claimed "That's just the sound these engines make because it's a 3 cylinder" Well my Geo Metro was a 3 cylinder too, and it didn't make that high pitched whine. It took a lot of sifting through Triumph message boards to find the answer. Those guys are so full of themselves at times, they hate on every 4 cylinder sport bike.

It's caused by the timing drive gears to my understanding.
