Back on track

Recently I did 2 more track days at Rudskogen Motorsenter. The weather was scorching hot (by noggie standards :grin2: ) with temperature around 30 degree Celsius (approx 85 deg F).

We had 8 sessions of 20 minutes track time each of the two days so plenty of riding. I had test ridden the bike just a couple of days to make sure there was no issues since the re-build after the crash, and I had fitted new tyres, Michelin Power Cup Evo.

The track was a bit greasy the first couple of sessions as there had been a couple of days with car racing and drifting prior, however that got better as the day went by.

I also used the first sessions to get the tyre pressures right. The Michelin Power Cup Evos was good but quite different to the Pirelli Supercorsa. They felt slightly slower to steer than the Pirellis but that could be the fact that I was running a 190/55 compared to my previous 180/60 Supercorsa's. I stuck with Michelin's recommendation of 25psi hot for the rear and 35psi hot front which gave me good brake stability and good grip at both full lean and driving out of the corners. The wear was alright but I don't expect any better longevity than the Pirellis.

During the afternoon sessions on the first day I experienced severe brake fading so I pulled into the pits and bleed the brakes only to discover that the nipple on the left caliper was leaking from the threads :banghead: I don't know how this could happen as I had test ridden the bike only days before going to the track and everything was fine. But this seem to only happen when the brakes got hot. Anyways, I didn't get hold of a replacement nipple so I removed the existing nipple from the caliper and cleaned the treads and put on thread sealing tape, put the nipple back in an re-bleed the system. The thread tape seemed to do the trick and I was back out on track.

The next days was just as hot and it was quite exhausting. I didn't feel good but managed to lower my lap time by just over 2 seconds from my previous best.

I noticed that the bike as well was running a bit hot, around 98 to 103 deg C (which equates to 208 - 217 deg F). Seems like on hot days the standard radiator is not sufficient. I am currently looking at a used HRC radiator but that also means that I'll have to change my exhaust as the stock headers wont allow a bigger radiator to fit.

Does anyone have experience on re-routing the water hose from the oil cooler outlet to the hot side of the radiator, similar to the HRC rad hose routing? If so, please chime in :smile2:

Other than that the bike ran well and I had no issues, but I have a nice item on order so when it arrives I'll update the build thread 0:)

Brakes....

Did a bit of maintenance yesterday, while watching the Suzuka 8 Hours. The rear brake have been feeling like **** with no feel and power. Not that I use my rear barke very much but I sure like it to function properly in case I would need it. Since I am a bit lazy I just bought a spare rear master cylinder of eBay for 12 bucks. It looked a bit shagged so I decided to re-build it. When pulling it apart it came apparent just how bad condition it was in. It was full of old grime and shite and everything was corroded so I threw it in the garbage and rebuilt my old master cylinder in stead.

The HRC tube I had was sweating brake fluid like my mother-in-law after a 5 minute hike so decided to replace that with a Tygon tube.

I use a rather short tube which is secured to the brake hose to ensure it is not scorched on the exhaust pipe:

I did get an replacement nippel for the leaking front caliper but it was unfortunatly still leaking so I got hold of a couple of monoblock calipers of a CBR1000RR. I was looking for black ones but these were off a Repsol edition so they are golden but I got them for a good price so I can't complain. Just waiting for my new Hel brake hoses and then I'll mount them.

Now, for the Suzuka 8 Hours. This years edition should be quite interesting as HRC was involved for the first time in many years. The #33 Honda RedBull with Japan Post fielded a proper HRC special; A one-off superbike, the CBR1000RRW:

After Yamaha has won the every Suzuka 8 Hours since 2015, Honda had been keen to get back to the top step of the podium and fielded a all-star team originally comprising of Leon Camier, Takumi Takahashi and Takaaki Nakagami. Unfortunately Leon Camier injuried his back and neck in the test leading up to the Suzuka 8 Hours and was replaced by P.J. Jackobsen. This was a big pitty as Leon Camier has been the fastest Honda superbike rider and is heads above P.J.
Dispite Jonathan Rea setting a new circuit record in qualifying and the Yamaha Factory Racing team was looking strong, the HRC team managed to qualify 2nd.

After 199 laps of racing in changing conditions they also finished 2nd behind Yamaha Factory Racing team. The #5 bike of TSR FCC Honda finished in place 5 and won the overall FIM EWC title. So a big congratulations to them!

I guess no All-Balls Racing re-build kit is used here :grin2: Also note the "Swedish Gold". Honda normally runs Showa on their Japanese superbikes but the Ă–hlins units show just how much efforts HRC are putting in to the CBR1000RRW and the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Notice the additional "step" on the brake lever. Assume the same "step" is on the gear shift lever as well. The devil is in the details and the level of details by HRC is insane!

Brakes again...

The postman dropped of a few parts today, and among them was my new front brake lines. I went with Hel Performance again, but this time I chose to go with their two-line race set-up. I previously ran a "over-the-mudgard" kit and I have absolutely no complaint of that, just curious to see it the two line set-up is easier to bleed.
