2003 Streetfighter, Here Goes...

I'm about to start the first steps in streetfighting my bike. I'm going to take as many pictures as I can and really keep up with the project.

BEFORE: (bone stock, except flushmount front blinkers and FE)

Image

AND CURRENT (UPDATED REGUKARLY):

Here's what was added since stock but before the conversion:

-'08 Front End
-RS-5 Slip-On
-PC-III
--1,+2 Driven Sprocket Conversion
-520 Conversion
-10,000k HID's
-Flushmount Signals
-Fender Eliminator
-Killswitch for Headlight & Third Eye
-Killswitch for Running Blinkers, Taillight, and Plate Light
-Adjustable Levers
-Driven Grips

I had my right mid-fairing get blown off on I-94, which took with it the ram cover and a chunk of the front cowl. Perfect excuse to streetfight, right?

Here's what's first on my list:

-Painting midpipe and headers high-temp flat black
-Switching from 2 H7 HID's to one high/low H4 beam in an 8" round vintage housing
-Moving ignition position
-Relocating ECM onto triple tree
-Relocating killswitches
-Bar-end mirrors
-Maybe some tail work...

I'll update with pictures and status whenever I make progress!

Here goes...

For the time being, I'm keeping it stock. I've tossed around ideas about shortening/thinning it, but I just have too much work to do before that. I'd like to someday make my exhaust come out under the engine, then have a much leaner looking tail, but that'll be down the line.

I've also tossed around the idea of making a more skeletal fairing-esque strucructure to cover the wires and subframe. I work in a metal fab shop, so it could be done fairly easily!

As for now, it's staying how it is.

looks like a good start! I'm subscribing, cause I've been half toying with the idea of a winter streetfighter project on my 03. we all love PICS :cruising:

Looking good so far!

How was the '08 front end conversion? Going to do this myself ('09 front end, but it's the same) over the next couple of weeks. Any tips/advice or is it a pretty straightforward bolt on?

It SEEMS straight-forward, but there were some hitches...

The bearings were a bitch. Tough to get out, tough to get in. Used a race press from AutoZone, and it ended up working.

Also, the bolt lock on the forks doesn't work after the conversion. As far as I know, there is no way around this.

The last thing was contact on movement. It hits the ram cover fairings as well as the gauge cluster. Removing a little bit of material took care of it.

All in all, GREAT mod... well worth the pain. Good luck!

Hmmmm, knew the conversion seemed too good to be true!

By bolt lock on the forks, do you mean the steering lock that's activated from the ignition barrel? I never really use that anyway so it won't be a huge loss.

Is it the forks themselves that rub the clocks or is it the brake lever/master cylinder? I've already modded an '09 master cylinder on to my current forks and have worked around that slightly so it doesn't foul the clocks. If it's the same problem as I've already had then that shouldn't be too bad.

I've seen some other threads and was aware that the thicker forks might rub the air intake cover. Might need to do a spot of DIY on that one!

I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the conversion but, at the same time, I know it'll be a pain in the ass!

Thanks for the heads up!

I ended up just getting the 49mm brackets. The shop I work at is pretty limited with tight radius roll operations, so it wouldn't have been a very clean mount. I'm drawing up a bracket to attach the gage cluster nice and close, and that should work out great!

I really think this'll be more of a cafe racer than a streetfighter... I'm keeping the clip-ons, going with a high-mounted single round light, and just looking to make it slim, not super muscular.

Just got confirmation from fedex that the stuff is waiting at my door!

UPDATE!

Parts in the mail + 6 pack of high life = progress.

First, I started mounting one of the brackets.

Image

After aligning with the headlight width, I mounted the second.

With the brackets mounted, I started working on the headlight itself. I disassembled it, hoping to temporarily fit one of my H7 lamps into the H4 slot. It didn't work out. I put the headlight back together and mounted it.

There wasn't any mounting hardware fixed on the inside, so I super glued a nut to each grommet. I also super glued a grommet to the dresser in my garage...

After really crudely mounting the BAS and all necessary connections, I actually got it to go through the usual startup routine! Fuel pump primed, gauge cluster lit up and cycled... I was pretty happy.

Image

Time for a ride. I went around the block, which where I live (in the middle of nowhere) is about 4 miles. I took a few more pictures upon return.

It really started to feel like my first bike... a KZ440 cafe racer:

Looking good.!! Can't wait to see it all done.. Ride Safe, AJ

Started out around noon today cleaning up wires... I got to eliminate a ton. Also, eliminated the BAS.

Image

Wire harness was much cleaner after that...

Image

I started actually wiring up the headlight, which consisted of an H4 high/low beam halogen bulb and an odd little light at the bottom which was yellow. It was the same size as my third eye, so I spliced the wiring to add the LED.

Image

Image

Once I got it hooked, up, it worked great... the high beam runs off of the stock high beam switch!

Image

Image

Here you can see the white LED at the lower part... not sure why it's there to be honest.

After that was working, I took it for a nice healthy ride. Still fast as hell, and the aerodynamics aren't too terribly different, although I only got it up to around 95 momentarily. Feels great to ride with more road in front of me than plastic! Once I got back, I started taking apart everything to powder coat... I also messed with the subframe. I think I might do something pretty extreme to the tail end down the road, looks like there are some cool possibilities when the rear cowl is eliminated. That'll probably be a winter project though. Here's some shots of the naked rear end:

Image

Image

This shot makes me want to powdercoat the tail and shorten the exhaust 4 inches... mmm...

Image

Lastly, I got the rear sets, passenger pegs, grips, headers, and midpipe off.

Image

Here's a shot of the engine with the exhaust off. For all the powdercoat guys who tell you never to use a rattle can... that engine cover is spraypaint. It has lasted me several thousand miles and still looks great!

Image

It was with Rustoleum Engine Enamel, if you're curious.

Next on the list is making a 3D model in SolidWorks of the gauge cluster bracket and programing it to be laser cut at work. I'll probably make it out of 12ga 316 stainless. Powdercoating will hopefully be next week, then reassembly! Ordering bar end mirrors soon, too.
