UPDATE!

Parts in the mail + 6 pack of high life = progress.

First, I started mounting one of the brackets.

Image

After aligning with the headlight width, I mounted the second.

With the brackets mounted, I started working on the headlight itself. I disassembled it, hoping to temporarily fit one of my H7 lamps into the H4 slot. It didn't work out. I put the headlight back together and mounted it.

There wasn't any mounting hardware fixed on the inside, so I super glued a nut to each grommet. I also super glued a grommet to the dresser in my garage...

After really crudely mounting the BAS and all necessary connections, I actually got it to go through the usual startup routine! Fuel pump primed, gauge cluster lit up and cycled... I was pretty happy.

Time for a ride. I went around the block, which where I live (in the middle of nowhere) is about 4 miles. I took a few more pictures upon return.

It really started to feel like my first bike... a KZ440 cafe racer:

looking good! you going to do any reshaping to the actual tank its self?
Thanks!

Probably not doing any tank changes, but I'm definitely considering doing something with the tail... looks extremely out of place from any angle other than straight from either side.

Looking good.!! Can't wait to see it all done.. Ride Safe, AJ

Started out around noon today cleaning up wires... I got to eliminate a ton. Also, eliminated the BAS.

Image

Wire harness was much cleaner after that...

Image

I started actually wiring up the headlight, which consisted of an H4 high/low beam halogen bulb and an odd little light at the bottom which was yellow. It was the same size as my third eye, so I spliced the wiring to add the LED.

Image

Image

Once I got it hooked, up, it worked great... the high beam runs off of the stock high beam switch!

Here you can see the white LED at the lower part... not sure why it's there to be honest.

After that was working, I took it for a nice healthy ride. Still fast as hell, and the aerodynamics aren't too terribly different, although I only got it up to around 95 momentarily. Feels great to ride with more road in front of me than plastic! Once I got back, I started taking apart everything to powder coat... I also messed with the subframe. I think I might do something pretty extreme to the tail end down the road, looks like there are some cool possibilities when the rear cowl is eliminated. That'll probably be a winter project though. Here's some shots of the naked rear end:

This shot makes me want to powdercoat the tail and shorten the exhaust 4 inches... mmm...

Image

Lastly, I got the rear sets, passenger pegs, grips, headers, and midpipe off.

Here's a shot of the engine with the exhaust off. For all the powdercoat guys who tell you never to use a rattle can... that engine cover is spraypaint. It has lasted me several thousand miles and still looks great!

It was with Rustoleum Engine Enamel, if you're curious.

Next on the list is making a 3D model in SolidWorks of the gauge cluster bracket and programing it to be laser cut at work. I'll probably make it out of 12ga 316 stainless. Powdercoating will hopefully be next week, then reassembly! Ordering bar end mirrors soon, too.

hmm I kinda like the tail like that... look pretty sweet if you cleaned it up and pc it

I had a ton of ideas looking at that skeleton back-end... I'll leave it stock for now though, and tackle that this winter. Here in WI, I don't have too terribly much riding season left! 2 months of solid weather. Actually, that's a terrible excuse. I'm just leaving it stock because I want to ride! I probably will do something with the tail, but again, winter project.

looks good man i 0started my sub frame last night
Nice! What are you doing with it?

Looking real good. Tail would look good with a chop and only half the exhaust ;)
That was my favorote prospect of messing with the tail: having a half-length yosh. Mmm... that'd sound so nice.

Tonight, I'm removing the swingarm. Pics to follow...

lol I feel ya, thats why I'm not really doing any thing els to mine atm... I just want to ride!

BTW whats the 411 on the headlight assembly?

The 411 is that my lazy ass hasn't made it to the post office quite yet! I'll get it out tomorrow for sure.
